Cryptic error resolution on complex returns

Decent software for simple tax situations, but sometimes confounding to remedy errors that may arise from more complex tax situations (e.g. investments generating K-1 forms have been notably problematic). I'm wondering if Intuit developer attention was focused away from the downloadable product and onto the on-line offering some time ago. I greatly prefer to work on my own without the tether to the network. The surprise upsell is getting tiresome. You've already purchased the software and not until the very end (when the user is locked in for all practical purposes) do they lower the boom with added fees. Pay to file each additional state, buy support that should be included since most of the issues stem from the software and poorly defined error messages, pay for audit defense, but it could be free if you'd only pay for future years of TurboTax.

Make this program a joy to use

It works, but it's too expensive, buggy, and time consuming. Here are my main complaints: Entering K-1's is a pain. K-1s for PTP's should not be so hard. Why can't Turbo Tax make it simple to split off a second K-1 when there's info in Boxes 1 and 2. Why can't it fan out a whole set of K-1's when I have a K-1 that breaks out for three partnerships - especially when two of those have Box 1 and 2 filled in (Looking at you, ET) Now let's talk bugs: (1) Every year there are bugs that cause stumbles that I have to work hours to get around. This year, it is certain bits of info that TurboTax asks about and then it is impossible to get back to. It will ask you something you answer but then you back up to change it and it is gone - No way to ever get back to it. One of these happened in the main program and another in the state tax. (2) When I tried to open a saved copy of my tax from before I started working on state, due to the aforementioned bug, it wouldn't open the state - it just sat there. I could skip over state and file but I wasn't going to do that with out at least looking at it even though the numbers were right. (3) Trying to work around bugs, led me to save several copies of my taxes. Turbotax doesn't allow me to see the whole name when I'm trying to open a file.

Overall Good Tax Filing Experience

Generally works smoothly. A few places where I had to enter info that I knew (from past experiences) would have no effect on the final outcome but it is easier to enter the info and proceed onward. Really more like 4.5 stars but that wasn't an option...

2 thumbs up

Carry over losses was difficult to figure out. But I went back a couple days later and figured it out. Everything else was right on. When I pulled info off old computer (turbo tax pdf file) to new computer. I could not pull the information from that document. It was very annoying had to input everything manually!

Turbo tax premium

Confusing. Why did I pay twice? I got confused at what I thought was the end and paid for state and federal filing to the tune of $188. Then I found out I had not actually filed but was charged. Then had to pay again at the REAL end of the paperwork.

A necessary evil when doing your own taxes.

The software helps with all the mess of dealing with multiple 1099 forms for interest and retirement accounts but I always have to dig to find where to enter tax payments I have made outside of 1040-ES. I also have to dig to find out where to apply refund amounts to next year.

Reliable for the modestly experienced tax payer

I've been using Turbo Tax for over 20 years. It is understandable, relatively easy to follow, and makes filing easy. I would not recommend a first time user with a complicated tax situation to use it, but for manyusers it covers income and deductible item in a straight forward style. And the product has a huge number of informational items on tap.

Failed to read Basis from Consolidated 1099

I"ve been using TurboTax for a number of years. This time it did not read my Edward Jones documents correctly. It read in three 1099's that were blank and on the consolidated 1099 it failed to read the field that specifies the basis and term (ie: Long Term or Short Term Reported or not). As a result i had to find and enter that information manually. It worked fine, just never had to do that before.

Worthless if you have International Stocks

Turbo tax did not assist me with a problem with a forign investment that did not have a Federal Identification Number. There is no way to submit the return for e-filing without the number and TT did not pfovide a solution. I am extremely disappointed!

Turbo Tax Deluxe Desktop version

The desktop deluxe version does not bring up prior year filings with the desktop version prior years for comparison. It does - in terms of checking if we missed anything, but not for simple analytics like change in income, deductions, gains/losses, etc. from one year to the next. Your SW should simply be able to calculate this and be pointed to the path for prior year filing - even if just this year vs PY.
