TurboTax Premier is Good Tax Prep SW with Caveats

TurboTax Premier 2024 Federal and AZ State handled all our tax preparation requirements as retirees with a variety of investment accounts, social security and other income. Unlike H&R Block Deluxe 2023, which we used last year, it allowed us to import our investment income statements from ALL our financial institutions, which saved considerable time and eliminated potential transcription errors vs. having to manually enter data from 30+ page 1099-B tax statements, in particular those from JP Morgan. 3 CAVEATS: 1) I was disappointed that there were not separate tax prep sections for Interest, Dividends, 1099-Bs, etc. Instead, all Investment income is entered in a single section of the Federal tax prep software, which actually makes things more cumbersome during the review process with my spouse and subject to leaving out something important. 2) I had to figure out for myself how to address the reporting of the sale of inherited gold coins. The in-program on-line help was worthless and a Google response from Intuit provided a much more cumbersome process that varied from answers from other tax experts. Ultimately, I addressed this issue by inputting an additional, manually-entered 1099-B. 3) I also found one error/oversight in the Deductions data entry section of TurboTax Premier - when using the provided TurboTax aid that calculates sales tax based on local sales tax rate and already-calculated income figures. The issue was that after presenting the calculated Sales Tax figure for "normal" purchases made during the 2024 tax year, the program did not request or provide a separate data entry field for sales tax paid for "Major Purchases," such as vehicles, boats, etc. So, instead, I had to use the manual sales tax entry option and combine the previously-calculated sales tax figure from the built-in calculation aid to the sales tax that we paid for our new car. 4) The AZ state tax prep section was easy and quick, but no real explanation was provided for why our state taxes were twice our federal taxes. I don't doubt the result; I just wish there was a little analysis provided at the end to explain this unexpected result.

Great program, one quibble

I've been using Turbo Tax for years, and it's never steered me wrong. However, there's one feature they seem to have deleted that I miss. There used to be an outline option where if you needed to go back and correct something, you could click in the outline to get to, or very near to, exactly the screen you needed. I sure wish they'd bring that back.

I like the name

The experience was good although I have trouble with compound questions like did you do this and this....because if one is no they both are....and that always makes me nervous. I had a great deal of anxiety because I had gotten used to using the CD (that is what I learned first) and I am a disaster with the computer...more so as I get older. I would have preferred just paying the $10 more up front...as it turned out I was able to call and get some help but it makes me nervous. I am taking care of an invalid parent and this just adds to the anxiety and stress I feel. I may soon have to take the taxes somewhere because it is stressful and my taxes aren't even that complicated.

Turbotax is great for the most part, see above

The first problem was handled quite well. The support agent was excellent and very helpful. The second problem did not get resolved. I already sent in a summary of that deal. This wasn't the fault of the agent. Those supporting her were unsuccessful as well. I finally gave up .

Annoying and Wrong in places.

Wrong: Still not splitting 1099INT and 1099DIVs correctly for me for NJ state. Still not marking US Gov't Accrued Market Discount as deductible for NJ State. Annoying. Had to enter Bank Routing and Acct# three times even after telling it to use same account as last year. UI still forces me to go walk through Foreign Assets twice which walking throught the return.

Changes to 2024 Program Not So Great

The 2024 version is not as good as the 2023 version for data entry. I do not like the comingling of the 1099DIV and 1099INT or the large boxes that now represent each form. When I work with 1099DIV forms that's all I want to work with. I don't want to wade through a list mixed in with the 1099DIVs and 1099INTs. What made it worse was that they were now listed in big boxes, requiring me to do more scrolling to find what I was looking for. I also found that while entering information, the enter button did not take me to the next field as it did in the past...not an improvement. In addition, I also found that in some boxes, I could not right click to enter supporting details or mark it as estimated. I had to go to the tool bar to get that done. It was not a problem in the 2023 version. All that said, I still trust TurboTax to help me get my taxes done right.

Turbotax Should Reevaluate its Tax Prep forms.

I have been using Turbotax for several years with reasonable success. Over the past two years I received two demands from the IRS for money that I owed that was not calculated in my Turbotax. I am hoping that my 2024 Federal and Michigan tax returns are accepted without me owing more money than Turbo calculated. In preparing the 2024 return I was not pleased with some of the changes Turbo made from 2023. Turbo made the entering interest and dividends more confusing and cumbersome. It appears that this level of difficulty is designed by Intuit to make finding and entering information more difficult to force the user to seek your new tax advice option.

Best Ever

This year's version was the best I have seen to date. However, I think the omission of an IP PIN should be included in your automated review. That is, if you had an ID PIN last year, you should (probably) have another one this year. Also, there should be an IP PIN question in the personal background. It was too hard to find this year.

not sure if i trust it

I have never had to file quarterly, aways had an end of year W2. After going through all the steps i got a message saying that I had an underpayment penalty of $293 for underestimating my 2023 quarterly tax. As a result, the new amount from the tax I owed jumped over $1000. I double checked my work, and it was good. I backed up and went through the steps again, same result. I pushed forward and it started asking for information that I didn't have. When I got stuck, I went back again to where it all started and no longer got the underpayment penalty message. Additionally, when I would enter income from a long-term capital gain my tax would increase by 19% with each entry instead of 15%.

Cumbersome tax program

The desktop version has always been easier to use and jump to forms, but some changes this year have limited that version. TT does not handle well the foreign tax credit when more than one country has data from brokerage. I had to pay for the tax advice to get this done and still was cumbersome. I may have to look for another program next tax season
