Room for Improvement

Very useful, but room for improvement. I've been using TurboTax for many years, but there still are places where I have to go to the paper copies of the previous years to get info for the current you. Since you went into my previous file to get my personal info, I'd think you could get that additional info as well.

TT needs some work

The program has a weakness in the handling of interest income form bond investments. It miscalculated the "accrued interest on bond purchases". On the State return, I needed to manually adjust the tax-exempt income applicable the return. You get what you pay for.

IP PIN problems

I was rejected twice due to IP PIN problem. I had no idea that the IRS renews this every January and the new IP PIN replaces the previous years PIN. You need a BIG caveat right next to the input field for IP PIN and also where to go to retrieve the current one. If that's there, I totally missed and was searching until I finally figured out that after the first IP PIN, you just go to the IRS.gov website to retrieve your current years PIN. Also, your partnership with Fidelity Investments ought to be cancelled. Up until this year, I always got a free copy of TurboTax through Fidelity. Now, Fidelity only offers me 30% off the download of Premier and it was still more expensive that just buying direct from you. I guess this one's on Fidelity, very cheezy!!

TT struggles to be relevant or useful

Eventually gets the job done, I guess. So many confusing prompts with little to no context, especially during error check. Can't tell you the number of times it legitmately said "need a value in this field" and the field has no label (or is just something like "line 17") and the title of the error doesn't name an institution, tax form, or anything to help you figure out wtf it's talking about. If you have a very vanilla tax filing, it's OK. Beyond that, it's garbage. I imported documents from some institutions where I ended up with let's say 4 copies of a 1099 combo doc. When entering info, TT only says "what is the value on line 4 of your 1099 from <institution>?" with no way to discern which of the accounts at the institution it is referring to. Minimally — and I mean minimally — they should always allow you to see the imported document that is triggering the error they want you to fix. Don't get me started on the final steps for filing. Filled in our names and the current date at least 3 times … why? And right before e-filing, it suddenly found another "error" on the state portion. But we had run the state check several times and it said everything was good. It never really knows where you are. When you re-launch the app it says "continue?" and then clicking that takes you to vaguely the same AREA you were in, but the specific form you were on. Why? There were also some cases where it asked me to fill in numbers — very important, critical numbers — that IT KNOWS! Why make me fill that in? You know better than I do, but now you want me to manually go through all 17 of my 1099s and calculate some total that you should very easily be able to do? Good grief.

Suggestions

Turbotax should catch if you have a form CS for prior year for beneficiary, but do not put in a contribution to Edvest or other college savings in the current year. Should be able to print worksheet for Schedule A, even if Turbotax says standard deduction is being used. It would enable you to check the amounts you put in and compare to standard deduction easily..

TurboTax isn't perfect..... at least not yet.

I have been using the product for over 20 years and in recent years have found some of the automatic steps to be too darn automatic. Please allow users to return to previous work using forms which are editable instead of having to go back to worksheets or even worse question and answers on step by step. Also, when I started this year's work I said "yes" that I would still have K1's from same providers as previous year. Once I determined this was not the case, I spent hours trying to regenerate the page that asked the question as to whether or not the same ones listed were applicable this year. Although after entering one of the K1s, the program allows you to add additional ones - there is never an opportunity given to delete the previously erroneous answer(s) - even if you go to forms and try to delete one that isn't being used. FRUSTRATING!

Gating files by year even with downloads is dumb

my information didn't transfer from the previous year and I had trouble initially fetching my AGI from the previous filing, not being able to open up .tax2023 files in the 2024 program is a blatant cash grab despite the fact that I paid for the previous product.

TurboTax is good.

Generally, TurboTax is Good. Had one issue this year. It was difficult to find Oregon State form for Medical for Seniors. TurboTax for 2023 was listed separately. But TurboTax for2024 the form was listed under Other Deductions. Which took a lot time to find.

Rental Property Sales Forms Improvement

We had a scenario where we bought a Town Home in 2003, lived there until 2014 before renting it for 10 years and then eventually sold it in 2024. The initial cost of the home back in 2003 was more than the fair market value in 2014. Hence I had to use the lesser amount, the fair market value in 2014 to calculate the depreciation. When calculating the capital gains, Turbo tax uses the Fair Market Value as the cost of home and does not as questions about the initial acquisition cost, additional costs incurred for closing and adjusted cost basis to cater to capital improvements. As a result, the tax obligation that was calculated was higher and incorrect. I was obviously conscious of these and cross checked the various Turbo Tax forums before bumping into one wherein the suggestion was to cover these as expenses when selling. While I did this, I also signed up for tax advice to cross check the same to make sure this was the only way to cater to it. The tax professional was excellent and confirmed the same. My suggestion to Turbo Tax is to make the forms more exhaustive to cover this scenario to help the next person who runs into this situation. If the forms catered to this, I would have definitely saved 50 dollars!

TurboTax 2024 still needs a little work

This is for the Desktop version: Generally pretty good but a couple items still need work and some took a step back. -Needs work: 1. The font size on the popup when clicking the help or extra info is just ridiculous, it's barely readable (even with reading glasses). And there's no way to make it bigger via zoom function or settings. Come on Dev's, you can do better, stop using whatever old UI kit you've got and bring it up to date! 2. Why does the program ask me to re-enter my routing and account number. It's the same as it was last year and it obviously worked or you would have heard about it. One of the reasons I keep using this program is reduce repetitive workload and having to dig out those numbers again and again is annoying. I understand you're trying to reduce errors but how about a pop up, like "is your info the same as last year?" and be done with it. 3. If I choose to pay the E-file fee with a CC where's the Apple Pay option? Why am I having to type all that stuff in? Furthermore, it's more secure using that pushing my CC info onto your servers (even if you claim not to store them). -Regression 1. I don't like the new format for entering investment income. Having a separate tab/placard looking thing is annoying. The old table/line-item format as used in 2023 was just fine. Please go back. Other than those things, it's all good! ;-)
