Turbo Tax is great!!

I have used Turbo Tax for a long time. Probably ever since it came out. We had rental property for years and it made it easier than doing it manually. We have stocks and being able to download from the broker is great. The first few years I would check the downloads, but it was always perfect. Now I just accept it. I have always done my own taxes, even worked for one of the big name chains one season and saw how easy it worked. Turbo Tax may have come out the next and I thought I could do it with just a little help.

Beware of Efiling fees

The product is great. The problem is that Turbo tax adds additional surprising fees at the end in order to e-file. The customer is taken advantage of because the customer wants to finish the process. Any fees should be up front with the price of the software

Needs to easier with better explanations

It's good but wish it could do a better job explaining the interpretation of some of the code rather than leave it up to the person to make a guess. Also very difficult to find different versions of the software uploads in the stores as many only carried Federal and not the Deluxe Federal and State.

It's OK I guess...

Interface is pretty antiquated. It seems to put the numbers where they belong, but sometimes requests information and is not clear in what is required. It finds "errors" but sometimes the suggested resolutions contradict the accurate information. It also gave a pretty serious incorrect "file by" date when I opted to make a MD payment by direct debit. It says if we electronically file by 4/30, we have until 4/30 to make a payment, but that is wrong. We must electronically file by 4/15. Only the payment can be postponed until 4/30. Also, some banks that are listed were unable to import my information so I had to enter it manually. Overall, my tax situation is now too complicated to do manually so I am grateful TurboTax is available. I'm used to it now, so I suppose I'll stick with it.

MAJOR NY State return issues with W2 Box 14

This year TurboTax was frustrating for me. There are problems with NY Return regarding W2 Box 14. 1) I imported using W2 digital PDF photo. My Teachers pension 414 H plan for $2,300 transferred in as description "H" for "$414" and dropped the $2,300 entirely. I almost missed it and would have messed up both Fed & State. 2) There is a glitch where my 414H (once above was corrected) auto filled twice on the NY return as both 414H NY State Addition AND as Taxable IRC from form 225 so I was being double taxed. I had to delete form 225 to correct so it was reported once as 414H contribution These are MAJOR issues that as of March 16th were not addressed by updates even though there is much online discussions on it. Very disappointed with this product 2024

Turbo Tax is okay.

The entry of information and the generation of the return are excellent. I particularly appreciate import of stock information. My problem is some annoying interface items. I choose not to register my copy of the software. I do not need to be reminded every time I open my return that I have not done this. Give me the option of never seeing this screen again after the first encounter. When updating the software I want to see what is being updated and have the option not to update at this time. I do not need to sit through a multi minute update when I open the return just to enter a quick form that arrived in today's mail. The software used to allow this. I always updated to the latest prior to filing my return. In fact, I would be surprised if you allowed a filing without the latest updates. Two stars removed for the above annoyances.

Quality is slipping, rapidly

They are not testing the software before shipping - that is painfully obvious. Too many hidden buttons and alerts that you have to scroll to find, too many repeated questions, too many sloppy errors that programmers should have caught before even submitting their code.

Eager to begin my Tax return

I have been using TurboTax since the DOS days with ChipSoft. While the EasyStep has been thorough and intuitive in years past, It seems that this year the EasyStep went off the rails a number of times requiring me to visit specific forms. In your defense, I don't wait for all of my information to become available (late February) before starting TurboTax. I will begin inserting W-2s as soon as I have them. This often means that I need to jump around in the Topic List. At the end of January, when all forms SHOULD be available, I go back to the beginning of EasyStep to fill out whatever I've missed. TurboTax failed to automatically maintain a couple of forms at the latest data even as I re-saved the file after entries.

Imports needs improvement

Importing investment documents is very cumbersome. We have numerous accounts with one firm and all the imports are only identified by the name of the firm, not the account name or account number. Have to go through each one individually and match a reported figure with a 1099 and then rename the entry. Also, getting a summary of the entries for each 1099 category (INT, DIV, or B) requires going to the forms. When you go to review entries it lumps everything together. Talks loads of time to double check that everything was entered.
