TurboTax repeatedly tries to route broker 1099-MISC Box 3 (Other income) and Box 8 (Substitute payments in lieu of dividends) into Schedule C / self-employment, even when the user answers “No” to all business/work/intent questions and deletes the form multiple times. This creates persistent Smart Check errors (principal business code required, linking required, “add new line of work”), phantom Schedule C entries (“Untitled” or temporary), and grayed-out “Unlink” buttons in the 1099-MISC worksheet popup. The income is passive miscellaneous investment income (securities lending substitute payments), not self-employment. It belongs on Schedule 1 Line 8z as “Other income.” Current workarounds (deleting forms repeatedly, entering via Other reportable income, creating-then-deleting temp Schedule C) are time-consuming and error-prone. Please fix the default routing logic for broker 1099-MISC Box 3/8 so it defaults to Other Income (Schedule 1 Line 8z) when no business indicators are present, and improve cleanup when users delete Schedule C. Thanks for the great product overall — this is the only recurring frustration I've had.

Wasted about 4-5 hrs trying through various channels until I asked Gemini. Gemini gave me the answer and took a few minutes to enter 24 returns, Evan after I started 25 returns. I've been using Turbo Tax forever. It's getting more difficult to use, and they made me upgrade this year to do something that I've been doing for years. I also had to buy a new computer because they wouldn't allow me to install on my existing computer.

For many years I did my return by hand, as a former CPA. Once I retired a few years ago, I started using Turbo Tax to prepare my returns. The software is so user friendly and allowed me to check items as I was preparing and inputting my return info. This a fantastic product and I highly recommend.

For the most part TurboTax Premier provided all the guidance necessary to complete my CA state return but, for some reason, it punted on addressing state FTB rules for carry over losses leaving it to me to figure it out for myself. Fortunately, I had a friend who is a professional tax preparer to advise, so I did not need to pay for expert consultation. But this situation left me perplexed as to why Intuit decided not to cover such a common circumstance within state tax law.

Worked in a comprehensive manner without the need for additional assistance for the most part. I did get hung up on importing data from Merrill Lynch as I selected the wrong line. The agent walked me through that. There was the issue with California involving Line 76. Just had to insert IRC 1362 or something like that. Think it is a glitch but maybe harmless.

I've been using this product for 20+ years, and every year they try o make cute little tweaks, assuming that people are stupid. Maybe they are. There are endless pages that you answer "no" to, and when you go through a section those questions still pop up. There are lots of little glitchy errors. The "mark estimated" option appears to no longer exist. This was great if you didn't have some paprwork handy but didn't want to stop the whole proess to look for it.

The import of the information from your W2 needs work. You need to inform your user s that the 401-K information is automatically included with your income & taxes paid. When you get to the part to do your e-file clicking the continue button initiates the e-file but the status bar does no indicate this information. The fact that you can't even ask a question about the application without being charged is unacceptable. You need to have a non-tax expert do some quality control of the application. The fact that support is not available to ask any question about the application is cheap.

Given extreme complexity of the tax code, TurboTax makes it relatively easy to enter and calculate, and is highly accurate. Audit Defense gives me peace of mind, and was extremely helpful one year when it was triggered. Downsides are that I have no insight into how the various taxes are actually calculated, it is difficult to estimate or try scenarios for next year's taxes, and I hate that loyal users are charged the highest price, if you choose to auto-renew.
