Too many glitches

Over many years I've discovered errors and glitches in TT programs. I usually discover these in two ways: 1) My own knowledge of what ought to be, 2) Studying "Forms View" and finding inconsistencies, inaccuracies, contradictions, and unexplained blanks either filled in (or not). I've done my best to report these errors to TT personnel, but each year the same old ones persist, and new ones arise.

Works and gets the job done.

I've used Turbo Tax for years so maybe I'm just getting old, but I feel it's just getting more confusing. Costs were very confusing when starting out online. So I bailed and got the desktop version. But then it was still pushing the online version. (I like looking at the forms to see where the numbers are going and I couldn't see that as an option online.) I really wish there was an way to streamline checking if we have enough deductibles with the new higher limit instead of spending all the time needed to enter it all in just to find we are way short. Also, after all this time why can't the state be more like the federal's question and answer? I don't think the program helps much with state taxes unless you know a lot about it already.

TurboTax: Good but not perfect

I was really put off by the requirement to replace my apple computer in order to continue to use turbotax. Strongly considered switching to competitor. But in the end, more than 15 years good experience with TT was dominate factor. Still grumping about the "extra" expense, but now hope for compatibility will extend a few more years. The tack on fees for "e-filing" and processing refund were an unpleasant surprise and to my mind not adequately disclosed up front. The two state situation was adequately handled but instruction for handling multiple 1099-R were confusing as if you move mid-year you will get two from the same brokerage but your RMD doesn't change. TT gets confused and over calculate your RMD & add a tax or penalty, Note.My 1099-R from brokerage contained, and I entred, the 17 characters in the state withholding account number box as I was doing the federal tax. Only when I got to the state portion was this flagged as on 14 characters were allowed. After some searching, TT identified which three characters to omit. Should have been flagged in federal part but was not. Had to go back to federal form. Not efficient with my time. On the plus side, the comparison with prior years is extremely valuable to catch big variations year that may be real or typos or omissions. Bottom lime, will probably use next year.

Turbo tax needs to be easier for students

Honestly It was just the worst to use. I am a student and I have scholarships that I got, I filed in two states, and there was just so many ways this could've been easier. you enter one thing and you see you tax return go from refund 1000 dollars to ow 300 and you are just confused as to what went wrong because what you entered was a scholarship amount, and then 30 minutes later it asks you if the thing you entered was a scholarship and was supposed to be included and then it jumps back to 1000 dollar refund. I hate turbotax

A couple of important items to improve.

Two areas where TurboTax should edit the questions to make completing the return more clear and easier to understand. 1) Ask better questions for filers who have made a Qualified Charitable Deduction from their IRAs. On my first attempt at completing the form I ended up with a penalty for having not taken all my required RMD because I donated part of it directly to charity. I had to manipulate the screens at least 3 times before the software wouldn't record a tax penalty for that amount. 2) I have PINs issued by the IRS that must be entered before electronically filing. In spite of reviewing all the entry screens I couldn't find the screen that requested that 6 digit PIN. I ended up going into the tax form itself and entering the PIN, and then triple checking to ensure that PIN was properly included in the file that was electronically sent to the IRS. In previous years the screen asking for the PIN was obvious.

Another in a long line of successful Tax Returns

I've been using TurboTax for years. The software makes the tax easy. There's enough help documentation to research tax rules whenever I've been uncertain. My tax situation is relatively simple - when completed my likelihood of being audited appears quite low. I've prepared enough returns that I'm both familiar and cmfortable with th process.

Has not improved over the years. Dumbed down

The fact that state tax (Arizona) has none of the easy user interface question as the federal return is getting a little old. and that you can return to a particular spot like you can in the federal. State forms have not changed over the years and you just haven't put any money ino making them better. "Ok, It's taking more the a little time" was cute 15 year ago. Get rid of it and give more practical information about when the app will actually open

TURBOTAX REVIEW

Very frustrated with changes this year. Offline experience was awful - icons for editing were hidden, so initially I didn't think I could edit anything after making a mistake. I started the return over again 3 times, got frustrated and downloaded other software - you will be happy to know that despite the bad interface with Turbotax, it was still better than theirs. Editing changes in Turbotax was very hard, even after I found the hidden icons that allowed me to change the items that said "Needs Review", but didn't allow pressing the "Needs Review" button. I don't like the new formatting for entering 1099s, where there are big squares and you need to mouse around to start. Why can't we just go back to the spreadsheet/table format, where you ask for 1099 and just enter everything all at once, rather than the back and forth required now. Also, I hate constantly saying that I don't want to import information - where is the box that says 'Don't ask anymore'? Charitable deduction entry is extremely harder than it was last year. The ability to sort the charitable organizations by name disappeared, so I had to scan down the entire list from last year to find each charity to enter my donation. Entering the Goodwill donations was a nightmare. The lookup tool to find pricing was really hard to use. Where is It's Deductible, or, if you aren't going to use that anymore, can you at least use a similar lookup, so I don't have to try to guess what wording to use to look up the price of a man's T-shirt? Clearly, I would very much like to find a different software than Turbotax, because you have ruined it. I would have given only one star if that other software wasn't worse.

Good product

I like the program; in most cases it is easy to use. And accurate. Problem: One investment was a 1099MISC, and program took it to Schedule C. After much research and time wasted, I learned how to take it to "Other Income." That should be easier. Also when I bought Premier Federal and State, it advertised free fed and state filing. However, I had to pay $25 for Missouri filing.

Needs Improvement

The app does not make it easy to pay state income taxes. For example, after filing and during filing, there is no option to make a payment from within the app to the state, just a short message directing to some 3rd party website that accepts payments for the state.
