Turbo Tax is great

TurboTax is much easier than the other software I used last year. My only issue this year was that once you clicked NO on the HSA contribution question, you could not go back and change it. We did decide to contribute to HSA and had to go to the forms to enter as going thru the HSA section would not as the question if you were contributing and did not have a place to enter the HSA contributions. I was using the Windows Desktop version.

Overall, good, but....

Overall, I really like TurboTax. However, I was disappointed in how it handled my 403(b) distribution, which as a pastor, was for nontaxable pastoral housing allowance. TurboTax did not allow me to add a clarifying statement to my taxes (i.e.- 1040SR, line 5c(3).) regarding why that distribution was not taxable. Hopefully, the IRS will not contact me asking me for additional information regarding that 403(b) distribution.

ROTH conversion

I was NOT able to designate a distribution from a traditional IRA to a ROTH conversion . Turbotax erroneously called it an inherited IRA. We were taxed appropriately, but I wonder how TurboTax will remember it next year. Also, I was not able to designate 100% of my refund to pay forward for the next tax year. Once I put one dollar amount in the box, I was NOT able to edit it to a different amount..

Unethical Business practice

I will be actively looking for opportunities to ditch turbotax next year for your unethical business practices. I purchased premier desktop with a $25 fee for state efile. When starting it prompted me to select online and said it was free after finishing, to file would have cost me 270 dollars. So I went to desktop and was unable to import my completed return so I redid it on desktop and when I went to file the option to pay with a card was not working (probably a turbotax policy) so I had to pay an additional $40 to use the refund to pay and amazingly that worked, who would have thought. I think there are now better options than turbo tax.

Great - Except for charity donations.

Great as always, but since there is no longer ItsDeductible, please make importing .txf files for donations more complete/streamlined. Importing the file itself isn't difficult, but then completing all the necessary additional information is cumbersome. Not sure I did it correctly. Thanks!

Great, but required manual entries

The interview in the desktop software would not let me enter medical expenses because it said we only qualified for the federal standard deduction. It DID let me add charitable donations. The software automatically entered our medical expenses based on our 1095-A form, but we had more expenses to enter. While we still only qualified for the FEDERAL return standard deduction, the additional expenses are beneficial for our state return. I added them manually via “Forms”, but it was VERY frustrating. I buy TurboTax to avoid the manual entries and to cover all possibilities. Fail. I looked online and found similar questions from multiple years back. Some answers were vague and some accusatory that users didn't understand what they were doing. I wasn't going to ask a forum question or pay for advice for something the software should do and I was able to figure out on my own.

Does the job, needs improvement

Gets the job done. Few nice features that can be present are comparing Married filing jointly vs Married filing separately. And the ability to upload PDF forms for 1099, 1098, etc. I don't understand why the desktop software can't do it, if the online version can do it.

TurboTax Has Lost It's Way!

I've used TurboTax since its inception and have always given it 5 stars, but this year is a breaking point. The software has become increasingly unstable, with constant errors and failures when downloading financial data, only for support to claim 'it's not our website.' Worse, the decision to terminate ItsDeductible (mid tax year!) is the final straw. For decades, that tool made TurboTax worth the premium price; without it, there is no reason to stay. It is genuinely difficult to walk away after all these years, but the program has simply lost its way.

LOVE TT - but here's a couple items to improve on

For my 2024 taxes, I had to answer several easy questions about my wife's NC teachers retirement 1099-R. i can't remember exactly what they were... The easy answers were something like "received payments monthly", "not a safety officer" "Yes, received payments for several years", "she did something else with her money", "received money from a qualified plan"..... anyway this tax year the questions for her 1099-R seemed a bit convoluted. also, i imported my 1099-R, -INT -DIV from fidelity. THAT IS SO NICE.... however, I had to some follow-up on the foreign tax credit - that i thought TT sould automatically populate . During "Review", TT did not tell me i failed to update my foreign tax credit under the credit and deductions sections

Send This to Tech Staff

Multiple problems today trying to launch and update TurboTax to complete my 2025 tax returns. First I tried to launch TT by clicking on a return I had been working on, but nothing happened. I shut down my Mac and restarted, but this made no difference. Then I clicked on TT icon in the dock. Same result even after shutting down and restarting the computer. Finally, I removed TT from dock and launched the app from the Applications folder after once again shutting down and restarting. This finally worked. (Running macOS Tahoe 26.3.1)
