About Gemstone Rings
The beauty of gemstones has always mesmerized and fascinated. The color, richness, and endless variety that gemstones provide are a source of inspiration to jewelry designers and wearers alike.
A natural gemstone is mined from the earth and a synthetic gemstone is one made in a laboratory. Though there are over 2,000 gemstones that have been discovered, only a few are used in rings. The most common jewelry gemstones are diamond, topaz, sapphire, emerald, ruby, jade, pearl, turquoise, and amethyst. Each gemstone is known for its own unique characteristics, and each individual gemstone of a particular type is graded on several factors.
Refraction
Each gemstone refracts a different amount of light. When light enters a gem, part of the light gets reflected from the surface and part enters the gem material. Higher light frequencies travel through the stone more slowly; while slower frequencies tend to travel faster, they create a spreading effect known as dispersion. This dispersion effect creates myriad colors.
Hardness
The Moh Scale is a relative scale that is designed to measure the hardness of minerals by determining which mineral is able to scratch another mineral. The scale starts from 1 and goes up to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the hardest. This scale is globally used to measure gemstones around the world.
Color
One of a gemstone’s most appealing characteristics is its color. A gemstone color is composed of hue, tone, and saturation. The most common colors for gemstones used in rings are red, yellow, green, blue, purple, orange, black, and white.
Cut
A gemstone that has been well cut reflects light evenly across its surface and, because of its perfect symmetry, also displays a dazzling luster. Well-cut stones are ideal for creating beautiful gemstone rings. The most common cuts for gemstones used in rings are concave, fancy cut, linear cut, oval, and regular cut.
Clarity
A gemstone’s clarity depends upon the inclusions present in the gem, how visible these inclusions are, and whether they affect the overall beauty and aesthetics of the gemstone. Some inclusions are not visible to the naked eye; some are visible but don’t detract from the gemstone’s natural beauty; some show prominent inclusions that have a severe impact on the stone’s appearance and beauty.
