Flea & Tick Topical Formulas

When choosing the right flea and tick treatment, it helps to understand the formulas available for your pet. Cat flea treatment comes in options for small and large cats. There are formulas that are designed specifically for kittens that are eight weeks and older. For older cats, formulas like those from Advantage® II treat pets between five and nine pounds.

Dog flea treatments go by weight to ensure your pet receives enough of the medication to be effective. Options like Frontline® Plus come in formulas for dogs up to 22 pounds, 23 to 44 pounds, 45 to 88 pounds and 89 to 132 pounds. Make sure you weigh your dog and choose the formula for that weight to avoid making your pet sick. Choosing a formula for a smaller pet and using it on a larger one won't be as effective.

There are also flea collars for dogs and cats that help prevent infestations for up to eight months. These collars protect against fleas and ticks on puppies and dogs that are older than seven weeks.
