I’m obsessed with this nugget ice maker!

I am obsessed with the nugget ice maker. I use it all day and even overnight. I grab a cup full of ice from it almost every hour! Best purchase ever!

Great idea but poor product.

So disappointed with this ice maker. This is my second one. The first lasted about 18 months. This one did not last 3 months. It started rattling and quit pulling the water from the tank. It constantly says it needs water but the water tank is full.

Don’t buy

Just a couple weeks into it and it’s already making the same noise as the others that I’ve already replaced. I think I’m gonna end up going with a different brand.

We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. It is recommended that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit.

Good machine - needs regular maintenance

great product and makes ice quickly. However, cleanings seem to come around quickly and involve a detailed process. Maybe it's ice makers in general???

Thank you for sharing how it's going with your new Opal Ice Maker! We agree that this product is great and makes ice quickly. And with 38 lbs. of ice per day, you'll never run out. Plus, you can easily pair your ice maker’s built-in WiFi with the SmartHQ app to monitor device status and schedule fresh ice! We recommend cleaning your Opal once a week. Descaling should be performed every 2-3 weeks, depending on the hardness of water used, and the ice frequency. No good

The thing worked ONCE! Now, all it does is claim I need to add water, and make grinding noses. Never makes ice.

Best in Class

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Ice produced is just the right size and consistency. Speed of ice production is excellent. Machine is a little loud while producing ice, but not over the top

Noisey Unit?

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This GE Icemaker is much quieter than the lesser cost of the units. I had a good nugget icemaker previous to this one that was noisy enough to purchase this GE.

Enhanced performance and reliability

Our opal 1.0 did not last very long, so we replaced it with the 2.0 version. so far, this machine has performed extremely well. very quiet, and super-fast recovery. I would highly recommend this machine.

We’re big fans of this Opal, and we’re very glad to hear the appliance is performing well and that you appreciate its quiet operation and rapid production! Among the other great features, we love that this Opal is compatible with a side tank, so you can attach a water supply and produce up to three times more ice, if you wish. We appreciate you choosing our brand again, and we know the Opal will provide high-quality, crunchable ice for you for a long time to come. Enjoy!

Yet another victim of "Add Water" problem

It's a piece of Junk. My previous GE Opal 2.0 ran for nearly 5 years before it started to have problems. I bought this one June 27th, 2025, and it stopped working July 31st, 2025. It needed a Software update? Yeah it still doesn't work. It's a lousy pump that they cheaped out on and now I have to figure out how to return this big heavy thing. Don't get me wrong: When it works? It's phenomenal and I love having it. But a MONTH into service and the only options are Software updates and returns is a JOKE.
