Perfect post bariatric surgery companion

searched for quite a while knowing that I was going to have to get an ice machine after bariatric surgery in order to help my water intake up since I have bad kidneys and have to at least 80 to 100 oz of water everyday to keep my kidneys functioning chewing on the ice is much more tolerated than taking continuous drinks of water after bariatric surgery this machine works perfect for that my wife is happy with it also we are both happy that we chose the GE model because it got such great reviews I wouldn't hesitate buying this Appliance again when I first turn mine on it took about 5 to 10 minutes to start spitting ice out and it works flawlessly I never have to worry about it and that peace of mind is greatly appreciated

Good machine - needs regular maintenance

great product and makes ice quickly. However, cleanings seem to come around quickly and involve a detailed process. Maybe it's ice makers in general???

Thank you for sharing how it's going with your new Opal Ice Maker! We agree that this product is great and makes ice quickly. And with 38 lbs. of ice per day, you'll never run out. Plus, you can easily pair your ice maker’s built-in WiFi with the SmartHQ app to monitor device status and schedule fresh ice! We recommend cleaning your Opal once a week. Descaling should be performed every 2-3 weeks, depending on the hardness of water used, and the ice frequency. loud, bulky/heavy, but makes great ice

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] First off, my family cannot live without ice. However, this machine is extremely loud, bulky, and seems to require extra cleanings if you have hard water in your home (more than the recommended amount). When you don't do the cleaning it really affects the performance of the ice machine. That said, it makes great ice and the family loves it

Mostly good

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Well made. Clear installation instructions. A little clunky - doesn’t fit under countertop. Ice nuggets are as advertised. A freezer component would help keep ice harder. Cleaning/descaling is a chore and not easy. Need a better cleaning procedure.

Nice to have but a pain to maintain

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It needs to refilled several times a day and flashes cleaning every 2 weeks which is time consuming. We have had it make loud noises twice now and have unplugged it and started over. It's just a big pain it the butt.

Opal ice machine the screaming machine

I would not recommend this product at all. In total from January 1 to May of this year, we bought a total of three of these ice machines and all three have the same issue of the gear sounding like they were squeaking or squealing, or the gears were grinding. A high-pitched scream was coming from the ice machine and we had to continuously exchange them after this last time. We just decided to get a refund back from Sam's Club and call it a loss would not recommend.

Unsatisfied Customer

The machine stopped working after six months of being purchased. The cleaning light and add water keeps blinking even though I have ran it through the cleaning cycles several times. I would not purchase this brand again. Customer service is not helpful.

Don't buy

Just a couple weeks into it and it's already making the same noise as the others that I've already replaced. I think I'm gonna end up going with a different brand.

We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. It is recommended that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit.

Not great

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am on my 3rd ice maker for the typical howling noise. Now this one quits and says add water even though it is full. After research this is the other common concern. Getting ready to pack it up for return again.

We would like to help and provide some guidance. If your unit is saying to add water but has a full tank. This is a sign that the water filter for this model needs to be replaced. The compatible filter for this unit is part number P4INKFILTR. You can find it here: https://www.geappliances.com/appliance/GE-PROFILE-OPAL-NUGGET-ICE-MAKER-WATER-FILTER-ACCESSORY-P4INKFILTR. We also have an article on our website titled "Opal Ice Maker - Normal Sounds" that will identify the different noises.
