Member ratings & reviews forA very good purchase
Door is designed well and installed very nicely. It took the guys a while, but it looks great. It is not noisy like I had expected from reviews. We had some concerns that our cat may be able to run out with the dog, but since you can adjust the time they have getting in and out, that won't happen.
Very good product
I really have to say that this door works very well. We used to get up in the middle of the night to let the dog out and then he would just hang out in the backyard for 20 minutes. I am not shy of writing a bad review, but it's hard to find flaws, one time the transmitter stopped working after a monsum rain and another time it broke (old 1st generation), since then I secured (sewed) it to the leash. So it's a good idea to get a spare transmitter. Probably the best thing about this door is that it seals really good. We used to have another (non-electronic) door that was supposed to seal really good but there were always gaps. Not with this one. Besides hot / cold weather, it also keeps our cats inside
Good when it works, terrible customer service
We purchased a medium electronic dog door. When it arrived, one of the two transmitters did not work but we did not worry about it as the other one worked fine and we only have one dog. The door was very easy to install, and it seals very well, blocking drafts which was a problem with conventional dog doors that we have owned. It worked great for 1 year, which is the warranty period. One month later, the motor stopped working. I opened an online ticket, and also emailed customer service, but received no response. The only thing that I did receive a response to was when I placed an order for a replacement motor at an outrageous price, and also paid way beyond reasonable costs for shipping. Two months after this, the collar transmitter stopped working. Once again, a ticket, an email to customer support, and an email to the company president went unanswered. They were around, though, to fulfill another overpriced order. Within 15 months of purchase I have put over $100 additional into this product. Due to lack of customer service I would not recommend this to anyone.
So far So good
We have only had the door 1 month, and so far so good. My husband installed this in about 45 min, but he is good with stuff ilke this, so it may take longer for someone with little experience. Our puppy was going in and out the hole in the house before we even got the door in, so needless to say he took to it quickly. The noise did not bother him. One dissapointment is the collar, and transmitter. Our Min Pin is only 6 lb so the transmitter is big for him, would be nice to have aftermarket that is smaller. The collar is flimsly, and hard to get on the dog. Because of how it attached to the collar, it it difficult to put it on your dogs existing collar. You can make it work, we did, but better design is need . I did sent an e-mail to them and they did respond and will sent it to there engineers. Overall we are very pleased, it has changed our lives for the better. I would, and will buy another one if this one breaks.
PET GARAGE DOOR
OKAY,,,We have had various pet door openers..and none compare to this one. This one is silent and no other aniimals can get in. Don't hesitate if you want the best....Thank goodness for this unit....now we can travel and not worry about other animals getting into our garage/home. I only wish I had had this unit b4 all the others I have bought. The expense is WELL worth it. Write me if in doubt..danpve@cox.net
Good only for awhile
I had this door and it worked great in the begining, then about four to five months into it, it shorted out and had to be replaced. The company was great and sent me out a replacement door right away. Problem is, it's now four to five months into second door and it just shorted out now too! I'm getting tired of dealing with these things and am tempted to just to replace it with a cheap flap style door.
Security
Best way to have a dog door and security at the same time. Pros: works great, easy to operate 2 transmitters, dog learned quickly. great help line for problems. Repair is hard if you have no electronics knowlage. Cons: Have to keep sencer area cleaned out
Extremely Well Worth The Purchase!
This door has changed my world. I did my research on the door and looked elsewhere online and Sam's Club has the best price. The collars you receive with door are waterproof and are a 40 dollar value from the manufacturer. The door is quiet and efficient not to mention the pets love it. One thing I would have liked to know before hand is that the door really requires two tunnnels (sold separately) for an 8 inch block wall. Only because most houses have some kind of exterior finish like stucco and this takes up room. Other than that I highly suggest the purchase of this door. For many animals who want to go out at night this door is perfect. It relieves you of lost sleep.
Plastic components good for only 1 year
If this product worked for more than a year at a time, it would be awesome. My first door broke within the 1st year warranty period. I had to remove it from my wall to return to Sam's, wait over a week (with a hole in my wall) for the new door to be shipped. New door installed - within another year, it broke AGAIN! I emailed Hightech Pet directly, as there is no phone # available on their website. It took them literally weeks and several emails to get back to me. They refused to replace the door. They sent me only a replacement motor and some photocopied directions of how to replace it and required someone who understands electrical to replace it (puhlease). A friend of mine came over to help me do surgery on the dog door. It was not the motor - something inside the sealed door caused the wire that pulls up the dog door to wrap around the components, get all tangled up, and break all of the plastic mechanisms inside. If it weren't plastic inside, it might last more than a year. We did our best to superglue, replace the tangled wire, and everything under the sun to get the door working again. No go. Several hundreds of dollars down the drain, and a hole in my wall to the backyard that will require a custom-built dog door to "fix". EXTREMELY disappointed with this product and its manufacturer. Oh ya, the collar transmitters aren't even close to being water resistent - they're affected sometimes by too much humidity. There isn't a battery indicator to tell you the battery in the colar needs to be replaced. Your dog is just locked out or locked in. I don't recommend this door to anyone. I have only one dog, not multiple dogs using this door throughout the day. Get something that's reliable.
Excellent purchase
I had this pet door (the large size) installed about 2 years ago - it has been awesome for my family as well as my pets! At that time we had 2 dogs and 2 cats - they each had their own collar. The dogs figured the door out right away - the cats took a few days. I think the noise and movement of the door opening and closing scared them. We ended up teaching the cats by turning the door off and one of us held it in the up position while holding the cat - someone else was outside with a bit of tuna. It took a bit of work, but both cats did learn and we were finally free of the awful litter box! The three downsides of the door from our perspective: 1) always have a couple of extra collar batteries because the batteries die without any warning and then yuour pet is stuck inside or out, 2) have an extra collar remote - the small parts inside can get broken when changing the battery or if they get wet.. 3) the door does make some noise when it opens and closes, so be take that into account when choosing the location. We quickly got used to the noise and don't notice it anymore, but visitors definitely notice it at first. The price at first seemed high, but after a lot of online research we went for it - and are very glad we did. We live in the country so the fact that it closes completely is huge - keeps cold breezes and rain out, keeps outside critters out, provides security in that it can be "locked" when traveling.
