Plastic components good for only 1 year

If this product worked for more than a year at a time, it would be awesome. My first door broke within the 1st year warranty period. I had to remove it from my wall to return to Sam's, wait over a week (with a hole in my wall) for the new door to be shipped. New door installed - within another year, it broke AGAIN! I emailed Hightech Pet directly, as there is no phone # available on their website. It took them literally weeks and several emails to get back to me. They refused to replace the door. They sent me only a replacement motor and some photocopied directions of how to replace it and required someone who understands electrical to replace it (puhlease). A friend of mine came over to help me do surgery on the dog door. It was not the motor - something inside the sealed door caused the wire that pulls up the dog door to wrap around the components, get all tangled up, and break all of the plastic mechanisms inside. If it weren't plastic inside, it might last more than a year. We did our best to superglue, replace the tangled wire, and everything under the sun to get the door working again. No go. Several hundreds of dollars down the drain, and a hole in my wall to the backyard that will require a custom-built dog door to "fix". EXTREMELY disappointed with this product and its manufacturer. Oh ya, the collar transmitters aren't even close to being water resistent - they're affected sometimes by too much humidity. There isn't a battery indicator to tell you the battery in the colar needs to be replaced. Your dog is just locked out or locked in. I don't recommend this door to anyone. I have only one dog, not multiple dogs using this door throughout the day. Get something that's reliable.

More than your moneys worth in peace and quiet...

We installed this door almost three years ago and other than a few kinks, it has been most awesome! Our boys relish themselves as "Squirrel Watcher Pros" and they just wear the little door out. My husband is "one of those guys" who can fix anything so he keeps it running...but there have been times, like in the beginning he screwed the screws too tight and the wall is evidently not straight and it was "bound" and it stopped working....easy fix...then there was the time that we had a monsoon and the rain got inside it and it stopped working....lol...another easy fix, just let it dry out. Each and everytime, "our boys" just stare at the door like they are saying "what gives? it worked the last time!" The collars that come with the door are just an after thought, but I cut their collar into smaller pieces...just long enough to hold the sensor in place and stitched them onto regular doggie collars and they are no problem whatsoever. I'm back today to buy a new door because after three years, I think our little door is really on it's last leg. Then I read the first message about how we can get the old one refurbed and keep it for a spare and I guarantee you, that's what we're doing. I can't say enough good things about this door....but you will need to find a little handyman who can get the kinks out of it from time to time...:-)

Almost perfect answer to our problem

We wanted our dog to be able to get in and out without letting the cat in; however, if our outdoor cat immediately follows our dog in the cat can get in too - a no no. We've had to block the door to make it smaller (our dog is very small) so the cat doesn't fit - so it isn't fool proof if you have smart animals.

Power Pet Door

Love the door. It took our 19 year old outdoor cat 3 days to train to go to the barn and eat with this door. We sure did love it. We no longer had to feed him outside and remember to get the food in before night because of all the varmets around. After one month of our cat loving the freedom to eat anytime he wanted, a bobcat came to our back yard and got him. Hopefully, some day we get another pet to use this great door.

reliability improved

We installed this in our new remodeled kitchen (8/08) and the door stopped working within two months. That was consistent with reviews at the time. The mfg replaced it under warranty. They must have made internal fixes because it's been 1-1/2 of constant use (cats running in and out all day and night) with zero problems. The only glitch is that the cats bring in 'gifts' from outside but that's not the product's fault.

Don't do it!

Learn from my mistake and run far away!!! This door was somewhat convenient when first installed, but I quickly found that the transmitter didn't always work, which left my dog inside or outside at times. However, with the first hard rain, this door became a disaster. The door flap leaked water all over my floor, both under the flap and down through the body of the dog door. I didn't discover the flooding until a large puddle had developed, warping and splintering my hardwood. I spent two hours on my knees mopping with towels and trying to seal things with duct tape as the rain continued to flood in under the flap opening. When I called the company, I was told that, since the door had been purchased over 90 days prior, that "the credit card company won't let us do a refund so we can't" (obvious untruth) and that the owner would only let me return it for store credit. They had no interest in finding out what the problem/defect was and trying to cure it or change it so as not to do this to other consumers. I'm was already out the cost of the purchase, hiring a contractor, and having it installed, and now I have to buy a new door and have it put in, as well as repairing my cupped, splintering flooring. Do they really think I'd want to have store credit to buy another one? This failed experiment has cost me well over $1000 so far. I'd suggest avoiding any of this company's products, and particularly this one.

Security

Best way to have a dog door and security at the same time. Pros: works great, easy to operate 2 transmitters, dog learned quickly. great help line for problems. Repair is hard if you have no electronics knowlage. Cons: Have to keep sencer area cleaned out

Great Product

I purchased this door to replace one I had bought from the power pet company over three years ago. The door was carefully packaged and the price was about 100 dollars less then other vendors. This door is great because it is insulated and does not let cold air in. Other animals can also not gain access due to the electronic collar.

Auto Dog Door

This is the second one I have bought, first one I have for 4 years. It is still working but had problens so I bought a new one. I will fix the first one and keep it as a extra. I can get it reconditioned by the manufacturer but you have to send it to them and what to get it back. That leaves a hole in the wall till you get it back. They should send you one and you send your back after switching them out. But I do like the door. No wind or unwanted visitors. Plus no fleas with the new collars.

Painful

I have no idea how good or bad this product is: I had to return mine. The company instructs you to deal with them on returns. It took over 3 months to get a refund check from them. If you have to return it save time and return it to the nearest Sams.
