Easy and step by step instructions.

Turbo Tax is easy and takes you through the tax filing process step by step. Just have your documents ready when you start, W-2, property tax, receipts, donations paperwork and any other paperwork. I have been using Turbo Tax for years without any problems.

Issues with turbotax

I had a terrible time entering RMD amount for an IRA that did not generate an 1099R. The turbotax expert who helped me found that her solution worked on the web but not on my desk top. Took a lot of time to enter it and we still aren't sure if the IRS will like the solution. Having to enter last year's AGI was not a problem but a bit confusing when Turbotax wanted the amount my husband entered and the amount I entered. The AGI for filing MJ is the same so why ask the question twice?

Turbo Tax Changes every year

Every year it gets harder and harder to download on to my computer to use. This year it took me over 2 hours trying to get it downloaded and kept asking me information I did not understand or have or where to find it. Then there is a learning curve because to format is different than the previous year. though these changes may be necessary, it requires more time to just get moving on my returns.

TurboTax "Improvements" suck - Cost YOU time & $

Horrible "improvements" from prior years. Forget the e-download only, that's the least of the issues. Cannot download 1099s from banks anymore without establishing yet another account with Intuit. Self-help absolutely useless. Deposit-to account data doesn't copy into the state return from Fed. And frosting on the cake, Intuit almost forces you to pay $40 for state e-file, after you have already declined 2x. Only when I saw they wanted to pull $ from my federal refund did I realize the software overrode my 2 declines and added it any way. Every year I promise I'll never use TurboTax again, but this year I'm pretty sure it will stick. Horrible Horrible Horrible

Disappointed

Very disappointed that Turbo Tax and E*Trade 1099 import process require manual corrections of transactions (i.e. Written Covered Calls) with zero ACB. In my case that would be hundreds entries in need of correction. The only reasonable option that I was able to use was to enter 1099-B Totals Summary. Note that this option requires (USPS) mailing 1099-B after E-File acceptance, therefore E-File option does not make sense either. Apparently Turbo Tax is recommended by E*Trade so please do not attempt to blame E*Trade for it. Note that I have already complained to E*Trade as well. Quick search on the internet shows that I am not the only one dissatisfied with this process, the complains about it started several years ago and are still not corrected.

abstain

I didn't get the idpin right, so my filing was rejected. After I I retrieved it from irs.gov, it was fairly easy to update the filing, but it was clear how to resubmit the filing, so that was a bit frustrating. Two things would have been helpful: 1. clearer instructions and a warning about the new idpin requirements and how to confirm that before submission. 2. clearer instructions after a rejected filing saying that the checkout and filing process has to be redone for a resubmission. (one reason I hesitated is that I'd already gone through the checkout process once and didn't want to pay twice. the clarification should probably note that the account wasn't charged for the rejected filing...)

Just 1 constructive comment.

The only feature that I do not like are the user input boxes that have radial buttons circled in blue. In a list of possible radial button selections only 1 is circled in blue. It gives the impression that the circled button is either the default or applicable to my data thus providing misinformation. If the intent of having it circled is to prompt the user to click on one of the radial buttons then say so.

Turbotax Deterioration

Forms are OK as were prior years. Step by step continues to deteriorate. Probably the worst version I have used and that covers a number of years. Step by step is very difficult to follow, particularly for investment info. Import is not good, leaves items (albeit blank) from prior year and adds new imported data. Very difficult to sort out current from old without going back and forth to forms. Even then not easy because it is difficult to correlate the form with the item on the step by step process. Not a very pleasant experience with turbotax this year.

Good But Not Great

Generally, I find TurboTax meets my needs but there are two recent things that I have found super disappointing about it. 1) On Form 8606 it did not track and populate the basis in my non-deductible contributions even though I've been using Turbo Tax to file my returns for all the years in question where I had non-deductible IRA contributions. 2) It carried over into my current year tax return a Blank Form/Statement that I had filed with a previous tax return. Turbo Tax should know not to include a prior year's Blank Form/Statement. I had to delete it, but deleting it wasn't intuitive either.

Intuit corporate greed is despicable!

It is REPREHENSIBLE that Intuit/TurboTax has spent milions lobbying Congress and has donated $1 million to Trump's inaugural in order influence the Trump administration to eliminate the IRS' Direct File program. This is not in the best interest of the American public, especially those with low incomes. I just learned of this news and this year will likely be the last time I ever use TurboTax.
