TurboTax Sucks

I had a decent experience with the product until it came time to file. I was unable, despite 100+ tries, to get past the "Hmm... " error when it came time enter my CC number for the state eFile payment. I finally gave up and printed my return and mailed it. So much for simplicity.

Turbo Tax is much more difficult to use.

2024 Turbo Tax proved much more difficult to understand and use. The import section was particulerly difficult and was never sure that it had picked up all rlevant information. I needed to perform manual alterations and had difficulty in making changes. It was also totally unclear how to do manual entry. I guess it just got picked up later but I was never sure. I had to go and manually check everything. My wifi is somewhat spotty and TurboTax now uses it extensively sometimes being unusable when the internet is down and won't even start until having checked for updates.

TurboTax UI is frustrating and unprofessional

It allows to calculate taxes, all right. It is given that US tax system is complicated and it is not easy to create a product to calculate the taxes for all the possible scenario. The calculation part and following all the rules works mostly ok. There are some complex situations where handling might be better, like handling amortized intangibles when interest in partnership is sold. Anyway, with some ChatGPT help, I could figure out how to do in TurboTax what I need. What is ridiculously outrageous is the the TurboTax UI interface, especially UI for entering investment and interest income. That UI was always cumbersome, but with the 2024 change it become even worse. It only fits the cases when there are very few simple investments or bank accounts. If I need to enter multiple investments, the UI requires too much manual work and it does not even allow me easily see all or at least many my investments at once. The UI requires answering a lot of irrelevant to me questions. Please, change your UI design team, and consider using much more a compact spreadsheet format for entering information. It makes the large amount of information observable, and it also drastically reduces unnecessary clicks. Also, why the UI is so inflexible with resizing? People have different screen sizes and need to put more than one window on the screen. Why cannot I shrink the TurboTax window to what size I need? The accessibility of TurboTax is also terrible. Why cannot I make the font bigger? Some people using it do not have perfect sight. It is very difficult for people with weak eyes to work with TurboTax. When I work with TurboTax, a lot of things are not clear, and I frequently need to copy/paste some text from teh screen to chatGPT or search engine, or just a calculator to verify calculations. It is beyond me why copy/paste from TurboTax screen is not allowed. Overall, the experience with TurboTax is frustrating, and I will need consider other tax preparation products. I'm sure a product with such a bad UI might continue exist on thej market only because of a near-monopoly status of the vendor. Please fix the UI.

Credit not applied to charge for efiling

There are areas that require prior knowledge but overall fine. I was disappointed that my $10 credit was not applied as promised to the efiling fee. The amount charged of $25 does not match the total provided when choosing to file. This is misleading.

Turbotax makes it easy but not efficient

I have been a turbotax Premiem edition user for decades. It has a lot of state about my past taxes which makes it easy to do new taxes and I have a lot of complex partnerships. However, there are a number of things that frustrate me. 1) The import of imformation from Fidelity and Schwab is broken. It connects but fails to import anything. How can the 2 big brokerages not work with Turbotax? How could this not be tested? It seems to be a well known problem as people say "try try again and try again and then manually enter". This is absolutely frustrating and the first time in years that it failed so spectacularly. 2) I have a lot of K-1 forms from partnerships, with Section 199A reporting. These are extremely manual, because unlike most public traded partnership where taxpackagesupport generated txf files, none of partnerships seem to know how to generate a txf file. And the primary reason is that the txf standard does not allow for that information to be coded and imported! To be considered a premier product this HAS to be fixed. By manual entry, I am making a lot of mistakes whereas the business that is sending the K-1 form is better equipped to do the right thing and send a txf file I can import. 3) After entering a K-1 form, turns out there are many errors that one has to fix manually (often it is not clear how to fix them). The user interface should fix this before we move to next screen rather than having to go to forms interface to fix the errors. 4) Form 8997 is not supported, code Z for a schedule D transaction. This is opportunity zone investments and needs yearly reporting. The official workaround seem to be to not efile but do a paper mailing. This is a relatively simple form, why would this not be supported even in the premier product. 5) Multiple states. With real estate investments it is easy to get into a situation with multiple state tax forms. Each of them is horrendously expensive. We need a package where multiple states can be bought at a discount. I find it easier to manually file for states!

TurboTax makes errors that can not be fixed.

If a rental property somehow gets marked as a royalty property it is impossible to bring it back to the correct type. This happened t me on a property that a properly marked and reported for many years. then one year its type got changed and I could not get it changed back. Reentering everything made no sense as 10 to 20 years of depreciation was in the file and no way was I going to reenter that data. So bad news.

TurboTax should notify when entries not supported

I am super disappointed for the first year in TurboTax after using the product for many, many years. I had a K-1 from an oil & gas asset sale that included Boxes 11I and 11ZZ. It wasn't until after filing my return with a significant refund that I discovered that these two boxes with "Other Income" did not flow to Form 4797 as required so my refund was overstated. There was no popup or warning but when I right-clicked on the number and drilled into it, the note said that Box 11I was infrequently used and not supported so the user must manually enter in the appropriate form When I tried to enter into Form 4797 Part III, only Parts I and II were available, so I had to manually create Part III. Then because it was manually created, the numbers did not flow as an exclusion to Form 8960 since it was non-passive income. So I had to overwrite the value on Form 8960 which precluded me from e-filing. After paying $60 to call support, this was all confirmed with no additional options so I gave up and just moved the Other Income to Schedule E so that TurboTax could handle. The results in the same tax burden but is now on the wrong form Very displeased this year with the programming. I e-filed an amended and paid back the bulk of the overstated refund. This has been a nightmare.

Pretty helpful

I am a first time tax filer as my husband is no longer up to doing our taxes. he had already purchased Turbotax so it made sense for me to use it. I found it generally quite helpful. Two glitches. 1) I filled in information to be used to generate the 8938. Some of the pages needed correcting; however I could not find my way back to wherever I had originally filled in the information. I ended up downloading a separate document from the IRS and inserting the pages. 2) When I filled in the info for the 2210 I arrived at a different number than Turbotax generated. I am pretty sure mine was correct but couldn't find a way to correct it.

1040 form

Good But it needs to change on Schedule E part 2, where it needs to bring in profit /loss from S corporation return, the program must do automatically. I had great difficulty figuring out why it is not transferred until I figured out I have to fill up a form for schedule-K

Pretty good, but still is not bug free

I ran into a snag with an error message at the end. When I tried to update my IRS PIN, an error msg popped up saying it hit a snag and suggested I review what I last worked on. I reviewed my entire Fed return and still got the error msg. I found a work around by inputting the PIN manually through the forms function. This is why I gave 4 and not 5 stars.
