Started out good until they weren't
I bought 1 in mid July. It was great. Cooled a room very quickly and it was very quiet so I bought another one. About a month in the 1st one developed problems. First the control on the unit wouldn't respond unless you unplugged it. Next, it wouldn't blow cool air unless you unplugged it. Last, it wouldn't cool even after you unplugged it. The second one started doing the same things the first one did about a week or so later. They would have been returned already if I lived in the same town as the nearest Sam's.

Cools large area
I bought this for my daughter who has no a/c and the heat was getting unbearable. It was quiet and cooled her living room along with the attached dining area pretty quickly. It came with a hose to vent to the outside and the unit was easy to move around.
Hi Ruth, thank you for your 5-star rating of our De'Longhi Pinguino Portable Air Conditioner. We hope your daughter continues to feel comfort with her unit for years to come. Thank you.

Cool enough
Easy to install and plenty powerful enough for a bedroom. Fairly noisy, but the sound level is reasonably constant when it's running, so there are no sudden sounds to wake you up. The remote is IR, so you have to aim it at the control panel, and that is hard as we have a 15-inch mattress and topper, which is in the line of sight from the far side of the bed. A mirror might help.
Hi Dave, it's great to hear you found our De'Longhi Pinguino easy to install. We hope you continue to enjoy your unit for years to come. Thank you.
OUTSTANDING UNIT!
For a guy who reads a lot of reviews for merchandise, I did not expect to write one. However, this Portable Air Conditioner (PAC) by DeLonghi [PACAN270G1W 500 SQ. FT.] is one of the best purchases we have made. I want to specifically address some of the negatives I read in other reviews for this model. 1) Shipping/packaging. The packing was more than adequate with the bottom casters recessed into a 3 inch dense styrofoam base. The straps were easily slipped from the box and the top part of the box lifts easily from the base. One caution; be aware that the power cord is affixed to the main unit but the attached plug is packed in a styrofoam cap protecting the top of the unit and can make lifting the top part of the box off the unit a little tricky. 2) Weight. I am amazed at some complaints about the weight. I am 71 years old and 150 pounds and I easily lifted the unit off the flat at Sam's Club and placed it in the back of my truck. Once unpacked, the casters work well and it easily rolls on our tile floor. Although, once you get it set up in a room window, you probably will not be moving it a lot anyway. 3) Noise. I am very impressed with how quiet the unit runs. I measured consistent readings between 54-61 dB with the fan running at maximum speed. Measurements were from a chair 10 feet to the left of the unit and from a sofa 6 feet directly in front of the unit. The "whisper" mode is, of course, even quieter. 4) Set up. I am one of those who reads the manual. The unit was fully installed and running in about 40 minutes. There is a slight air gap at the top of the panel in the window but DeLonghi included foam weather stripping and we have not put it on yet; no biggie! The air coming from the vents is "icy" cold. Compressor cycling is almost non-existent. The flex duct connected easily to the unit and the window adapter with no problem whatsoever. The flex duct is warm and some reviewers complained. Well, it better be warm because it is removing heat from your house! One reviewer wrapped insulation around the duct; I don't believe that is necessary as the duct is not that hot. 5) Does it work? We are experiencing late-afternoon highs in the mid 90s with about 40-50% humidity so the "swamp" evaporative cooler was making life miserable. We thought that perhaps this DeLonghi unit rated for 500 square feet might make our 16' x 19' (~300 ft.) living room bearable. We are amazed at this units cooling! We have not run the swamp cooler since we bought this unit. There is a very noticeable difference in our entire 1200' house with reduced humidity. While the back bedrooms are not as cold as the living areas adjacent to the DeLonghi unit, they are definitely more comfortable than before. This was something we did not expect. The plug on the unit has a built-in GFI feature and it has not triggered once. This was a concern because the unit pulls 12.6 amps and our electrical box is marginal. Some reviews complained that the unit leaks but we have not had any problem. The control panel on the top of the unit is very responsive and touch sensitive (i.e., you don't have to push buttons, you just touch them). The remote control is self-storing on a recessed holder on the top of the unit. It is simple and intuitive but you must be within a defined distance and angles from the unit (but this is true of almost all remotes) so I don't consider it a problem. Today was the first time we set the temperature as low as 72 degrees and our 300 square foot living room got TOO cold so we raised the temp setting. This unit works!!! 6) Would I buy again? Yes, I highly recommend this unit. It has brought great comfort to our home and works better than advertised because of the square footage it has cooled. Great product!!!
Great product!
My daughters new apartment does not have central air because the building is historical and she hates window units. After much research I picked this portable air conditioner for her as a gift. Easy install and when we turned it on, it blew strong cold air. Within minutes her apartment got cool. I bought this in store at our local Sam's Club. Actually, I opened a Sam's Club account so I could buy this unit because it was over $200., less than in regular retail stores. So glad I did. Her apt is 800 square feet over all, and this when needed is installed in the living room. It cools the living room, kitchen, bathroom and hallway in one shot. The bedroom is around the corner, so it really doesn't make it to that room, but at night she just rolls it into the bedroom, installs it and she is good to go. This covers 500 sq ft so it is pretty strong for just a bedroom so I recommend it for a living room. I think everyone should also consider this to have on hand just in case their central air breaks down and you don't have the funds to replace it in the near future since they can cost quite a lot. Very attractive looking too.
GREAT BUY, Great Price!!!
We have three of these units and they work great. We have used a window air conditioner previously, which would leak; but these don't leak or have any kind of mildew smell during or after running. The air is cold and the dehumidifier works great when we need it for the basement in the rainy spring months. I actually came to the Sam's Club website to buy another and figured I would write a review since I was here. It's a smart buy!!!
Great unit, cold air, does the job!
My AC went out and it was going to be several days before a technician would be able to repair the central AC. It cooled the room ice cold and my family thought it wokked better than the central system! It is noisy, but that's due to the output of cold air, you just need to accept the fact that a small unit is going to have noise for the extreme amount of air it moves around.
Only 6,700 BTU
Pros: Spits out cold air. Easier to install in a basement window than a window AC. Fairly quiet. Rolled easily on it's wheels. Cons: Not even close to a 12,000 BTU window unit. Apparently the smaller BTU rating is the actual cooling power on these portable units. Dealing with the exhaust hose is a bit of a pain. It gets fairly warm and just heats the air in the room you are trying to cool. Ended up wrapping it with an old bed sheet which helped a bit. Couldn't cool a 273 sq ft room in a reasonable time. It would run for hours and the temp would only drop a degree or two. It could not cool the room off to the set temperature of 73°. Not really sure what the Real Feel feature did, tried it twice. One day it kept it at 74° the next it kept the room at 78°. Which was basically the temp of the room when I turned it on. I didn't bother with it after that. Display doesn't tell you the room temp, just the temp you set. I returned the unit and got an 8,000 BTU window unit which cools the same 273 sq ft room in about 2 hours.
So far I am very happy with it
After doing a lot of research I decided to go with this DeLonghi model. I wanted to find one at Sams Club since the prices are usually good and they have a great return policy. The reviews for this product are pretty good and DeLonghi is a New Zealand Company. Even though this unit is made in China I wanted to purchase from a company not based in China. This is being used in my bed room which is 12 X 12. My home is also cooled by central heat & air, but I like my bed room cooler and I didn't want to cool the entire house. This unit has been great so far. It's not as noisy as my window unit I used to use. I mean there is noise with it, but it's not as loud as that window unit. Since this unit is oversized for my room it easily cools my bedroom. Setting it on 73 degrees will cool my room to about 68 degrees in the quiet mode too. It does raise the humidity in my room. It will fluctuate throughout the time I have it on from 50% to 70% up and down . I don't think this is a big deal as I only the use it when I am home and in my bedroom so that's about 9 or so hours a day. So so far I am happy with my purchase. I just hope it lasts a long time with out breaking.
Better than expected
Not sure what all of the negative reviews are for. People complaining of it leaking probably never emptied the drain pan. People complaining of it blowing warm air didn't read the instructions. Once you turn the AC mode on, it takes a few minutes for the compressor to kick on and start blowing cold air. This is clearly labeled on front of the unit. Also, before you use it I HIGHLY recommend you let it stand upright for 24 hours before you use it. Again, this is clearly stated in the instructions. If you got this shipped, no telling if this was on its side the whole time in transport. If it will not stand upright in your car or SUV, lay it on its side. But once you get it home, let it stand upright for 24 hours. This is very important as the refrigerant needs to settle to the bottom in order for it to operate properly. The window exhaust slats were too big for my window so I used my miter saw to cut it to size. That coupled with the foam strips and the exhaust accessories work fine. Yes they could be higher quality but nothing is perfect. You could always wrap the exhaust tube/vent with HVAC insulation foil tape to help it cool better. Unit cools well and by the time I wake up in the morning I am freezing. The noise is not too loud but this is not a window unit where the compressor is hanging outside your window outside so this will be loud. These portable ACs are fairly newish when it comes to being mass produced and in popularity so models in future years will be better and more quiet. Overall a great buy, very satisfied!
