Cheaply made - doesn't last

I had a Scotts spreader for over 30 years & it finally died so I purchased this Pro Edgeguard. I had it for about 18 months and the spinner inside the basket broke off. I super glued it back on. The very next usage the disc on the bottom which throws the fertilizer broke off. These parts are apparently made from very cheap plastic and not built to last. Very disappointed.

Poor quality and poor design

Too much plastic. Have had problems with this unit from day 1. The drive mechanism for the dispenser 'prop' is all just a press-fit design. It works loose and the prop no longer spins. I'm constantly having to hammer the axle plugs back into the center of the tires - sometimes that fixes it and sometimes it doesn't. This past weekend I finally put band clamps around the wheels where they attach to the axles to get it to work reliably. My yard has some tree roots in it from a maple tree and apparently, unless your yard is completely smooth and flat, this unit basically falls apart. I love the spreader concept - if only the quality were there. I basically wasted my money on this unit.

You get what you pay for.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Yes this costs a bit more, but it's worth it. It's a good spreader but the pneumatic wheels are awesome. they made it very easy to push over uneven terrain. The edgeguard works great too, no more sweeping up when I'm done. I'm sorry I didn't switch over and DIY sooner. Good spreader! Plus it has that Scotts warranty on it...

Disappointed. Lasted one year then broke completely

This was my second Scott spreader. My first one lasted about 3 years with average use. I bought this to spread seed, fertilizer and ice melt. I thought by spending more money to buy the top of the line spreader I would get a few years out of this. The gate would get stuck open on a regular basis but that was just a nuisance. When the gear from the axle to the spinner broke I was very disappointed to discover that it was just a thin piece of plastic that failed. Not sure that I will replace this with another Scott product.

Will not buy again

This product has almost ALL PLASTIC inside. This it my second Scotts spreader. I have approx 1 AC of lawn. I spread lime each year. It claims to hold 1 bag but the spreader inside wheel/agitator is not firm/strong enough to get thru the pellets and breaks. Went onto website & could not find repair parts, seems unavailable have to buy a new one. It does a great job with light stuff like seed but not anything more substantial.Tires are good idea. Buying any competitor is CHEAPER at almost any price due to breakdown/replacement/aggravation cost. Just make sure inside is NOT PLASTIC. Will NEVER buy again.

Poor quality

I bought this a few months ago from a local home improvement store. The spreader didn't perform all that well when it did. Furthermore, the plastic shaft has failed like others have mentioned. This spreader was definitely not worth the money it cost and i am outside of the return window at the retailer.

Plastic Junk

I only have a 3/4 acre yard so I am not working my Scotts spreaders to death. However, I continually have to order replacement parts. I go through 1-2 agitators per season and this time the agitator drive shaft is broken. I have owned numerous Scotts spreader and have had the same problems with each of them. Unfortunately, the Scotts spreaders have flooded the market in my area and it is hard to find another brand nearby.

trying one more time because i love scotts

Bought this spreader 2 years ago. It did have air tires then. Two weeks ago it broke while using and I was unaware for 1/2 the lawn. Now I have embarrassing stripes. Bought the same to replace because I am a Scott's fan. Noticed they now have plastic wheels. It will be a few weeks before the new one is tried.

Scotts Broadcast spreader DLX

This spreader tires are very cheaply made. The tire shaft is made of Aluminum spreaded at the end to engage in the plastic tire, which has groves as a gear and while this will work for a short amount of time, this is made to fail too quick. The tire gear, so to speak strips very fast, with only maybe 6 uses per year with a total of approximately 15 to 18 times of usage. I never put more than 30 t0 40 pounds in the spreader and it stripped out and becomes not usable. Why don't Scotts put and aluminum gear inside the tire boss to eliminate this issue.and prolong the uses? I fear if it lasted too long, then you wouldn't have repeat buyers as often. quality brings business.

This product is cheaply made and not worth the price

I normally do not write reviews but I am so extremely disappointed with this spreader. I have used Scott's products before and have been satisfied, but this spreader has been a disaster. I also should note that this is the third spreader of this kind I have used/returned in the last year, with each time something new breaking within the first or second use. On the first spreader it was the gear box locking up and the plastic snapping, the second time the cable would not work right when the lever was depressed and now recently I went to use it and the tire went flat. Upon inspection, I discovered a gaping hole in the inner-tube after one use. I'm done with this spreader and Scott's products. Cheaply made plastic parts and overpriced..three strikes and I'm out.
