The Ghiradelli Story

Ghiradelli chocolate is almost as synonymous with San Francisco as cable cars, but its origins go all the way back to Rapallo, Italy where a young Domenico Ghiradelli first began apprenticing with a local chocolatier in 1817. In 1849, Ghiradelli set off to the new world, originally opening a convenience store in Stockton, followed by a second store in San Francisco. In 1852, Ghiradelli opened a candy shop, creating everything from chocolates to hard candies. The shop ultimately moved to San Francisco's scenic waterfront district; this shop would become the world-famous Ghiradelli Chocolate Company, where it remains to this day. Ghiradelli's waterfront warehouse survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and eventually was expanded into Ghiradelli Square, one of San Francisco's most popular destinations. The location would eventually be declared an official city landmark in 1965.
