I have wanted a good set of stainless cookware for many years but it has never been in our budget. After MANY sets of non stick, some good some not so good, I finally got my stainless! This was a gift from my husband for Christmas. I guess he got tired of me drooling over the stainless pots and pans every time we went shopping... and maybe a little bit of my whining about worn out pans too!
Out of the box (after he carried to box to the counter for me, wow! They are heavy!) they are beautiful! They have a mirror shine and each piece is expertly constructed, with doubled riveted ergonomic handles which help with carrying, dumping and even make it easier on my arthritic wrists, a heavy bottom so they sit evenly and safely on any surface and vented lids that help keep crisp things crisp while being covered and reduce boil overs.
I have been reading some of the reviews and must say that most of the issues people had with this set were because they didn't do their due diligence in researching how to use stainless cookware. You must heat stainless before adding your cooking fats and then allow the fat to come to temp before adding your food. Every cooking surface is porous and the heat will expand that surface to make sure your oil or fat gets into every part before you put your food in so that your food does not end up engaging a surface after heating that isn't coated. Food will do a sort of dance on the surface with the oil or fat acting as a buffer. It not only makes for a non stick surface, it makes for easy clean up afterward! Viking gives some very good advice in the literature they add to each box, it's wise to take advantage of their experience and expertise!
I have been cooking for 40+ yrs and have used every surface, cooking medium and pot you can imagine. Yes, I've even used the top of a wood stove to cook a meal in cast iron. I currently have a 60 yr old counter top stove with electric coils that is notoriously cranky and likes to fluctuate it's own temps so it's going to be an interesting couple of weeks getting used to new cookware! I have used stainless before, even have a few pieces in my repertoire but never a beautiful set such as this. Thank you Viking for making such a beautiful set of cookware! I'm certain it will last my lifetime and well into my granddaughter's! Since she has claimed ownership of this set and has asked me to officially name her as it's new owner in my will, I'm sure it will be well loved for it's entire life. She is a foodie like me and loves to cook. We don't pretend to be chef's, we think what we make is somewhat better than that since every dish we make is made with love because they are made for our family. We also appreciate our kitchen implements and guard them with the ferocity of a mother with her children. I have good sharp knives and stainless cookware and you better not touch either until I've taught you how to use them properly and without damaging them!
