And that's saying something considering what a coffee freak I am. Not that I quaff gallons of it -- I only have three or four cups a day -- but it's a hobby of mine. I'm passionate about it. I bought this coffee when I first took out my Sam's Club membership, and I hesitated because of the low price. How good could it be at $5.95 / pound, I thought. My oh my, was I surprised. It's so fresh and rich in aromatic oils that it clogs my burr grinder after a week or so, and I have to run popcorn or a lesser coffee through it to clean it out. This coffee is dark, rich, bold, and deeply aromatic. It may be too oily for some people's taste, in fact, but it exactly suits my own. I'm on my third bag now, and the quality has been consistent. So what can I say? I've had coffees that were thrice the price of this one that I don't like half as much. Give it a try. If you like dark, rich coffee, I think you'll love this one.

Very "respectable" flavor and aroma, if you like Starbucks French Roast, you'll surely enjoy this coffee. The beans are fresh and have that nice oily look to them...that right there says fresh! Daily Chef Coffee French Roast Fair Trade Certified, Whole Bean (40 oz.) is NOT exactly Starbucks, but it is every bit as enjoyable in it's own right, and I buy 1-2 bags every trip to Sam's! So glad we decided to give this one a try!

I typically use Starbucks or several local coffee roasters' French Roast, Verona, or Italian Roast, and other equally dark coffees. We bought this because we are on a budget this summer, so we are trying to stretch our coffee dollars. We ground this to a course grind and used in our French press, so the experience may have been different with a medium grind and a drip coffee maker (which we don't have). On first taste, this coffee is not too bad, and I would describe the flavor as fruit and chocolate. It has a bit of sweetness to it, which is different than my favorite French roasts, but it is an acceptable flavor. Our main problem with the coffee is that the flavor isn't deep and robust, nor does it linger, which is our favorite thing about good coffees, so, to me and my husband, the flavor is fairly flat and short-lived. This may be due to the less oily nature of this coffee compared to my favorite coffees. I know some people prefer non-oily coffees because the oily coffee may be difficult to grind, and some even believe roasting until the oil is released ruins the coffee, so this coffee may be acceptable for them. However, we like dark oily coffees that linger, and if you also like oily dark coffees, then you may not like this one too much. We may mix this half and half with our favorite coffees to stretch things, but we probably will keep looking for another budget coffee that is more acceptable (perhaps Cafe Budtello whole bean...our next try).
