The brand is completely what I only use for Mexican food!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am the only one in our home that eat refried beans and this is the only brand I buy for them! I love the traditional ones! Not to runny and actually have full size beans in them too! Great flavor!

The change of recipe failed!

My family has been buying Old El Paso ingredients for taco night for nearly 40 years. I realize things change and I have noticed that change over the years. But never has it been so drastic, aka bad, as it is now! I purchased 6 cans of Traditional Refried Beans and didn't notice the new stamp on the label boasting "Made with Real Spices". It wasn't until I opened the can and noticed the smell was definitely different, then heated it up and ate it on my burrito, that I realized something was WAY off! It tasted like literal poop! At that point, I looked at the can and noticed the new stamp on the label. That's when I realized "great! they've changed it again!" Fortunately, I still had older cans in my pantry to compare it to and sure enough it is different! The new labeled beans have 20 more calories than before, 1g more of fat, and it went from 0g sat. fat to now .5g sat fat! 10mg more sodium, and 3g LESS dietary fiber! The only positive difference is you get 1g more of protein. You also get less iron and the potassium went from 750mg down to 290mg! When you go over to ingredients, one thing I know is that the first 3-5 ingredients are going to be the main ingredients in foods. On both cans, Cooked Pinto Beans and water are the first 2 ingredients, however, the old can then went on with salt, tomato paste, sea salt... the new can lists LARD as the next ingredient! Not once but TWICE! Old El Paso- not sure what you have going on in your kitchens, but this tasted awful and left me with an upset stomach! I don't typically write reviews, but I felt that since you are now losing a lifelong customer, you should know why. Today, I will be returning the 5 remaining cans that I recently purchased back to the store for a refund. I'm aware that this one customer may not make the difference to your bottom line, but I hope that in getting this review you take into consideration that cutbacks should not come at the cost of the quality of your products.

Old El Paso is great for our multi-generational family

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Old El Paso refried beans are great! My wife and I have been married almost 40 years and have always used Old El Paso. They are creamy, versatile, and a good addition to every Tex-Mex recipe we make. They are also very good as a stand alone dip with tortilla chips. Our grandson uses them to make a burrito for an after-school snack, or sometimes just has them with cheese and salsa. They are a great source of protein and seasoned perfectly as they are.

Tastes like straight chemicals

DO NOT BUY THESE BEANS!!! I wish I could give zero stars. I tried them out for the first time. Did a quick taste test once they were warm and it tasted like I ate a mouthful of straight chemicals. It left a HORRENDOUS after taste in my mouth. Checked the date of expiration and it said they don’t expire for another year! I had my fiancé try it to make sure it wasn’t just me and he almost threw up! I chucked them. I had another can I bought at a different location which was also “fresh” and not expired, opened them and no shocker those ones also smelt the same with a rotten odor of chemicals. Had to throw out both. I won’t be shocked if I get sick from the one bite I had. THESE BEANS NEED TO BE BANNED!!

No taste!!

I thought I mistakenly purchased a low sodium version of traditional retried beans, but NOPE! Just a tasteless pile of goop! What the heck?! I threw the rest of my burrito away!! Then came here and read TONS of bad reviews on your new recipe. Hahahahaha! Wow!! Good luck with that! Movin’ on to something new, and hopefully better!!

Good refried beans

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My husband loves Refried Beans. Old El Paso is his favorite. I make bran burritos, I make Bean dip, and sometimes we put just a little on tacos. This Old El Paso Refried Beans taste like something you would get in a Mexican restaurant.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I spent a lot of time trying to make these taste better. Great value for the volume of beans, but honestly very bland flavor. I got what I paid for, I believe, since they were available and affordable, but would choose a different brand going forward.

Quick and Acceptable addition to any meal

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I buy and use this style and brand of refried beans for my Mexican-style baked dîshes. It holds up well to the heat and mixing/stirring, plus I can choose to not use additional added salt for my dish; the sodium in this product is rather high. For a stand alone side dish of beans the flavor is a little bland so I prefer to use a different brand or make my own pinto beans from scratch and “refry.” I recommend this product for the cook that’s short on time or new to the kitchen and looking for a quick and acceptable ingredient or addition to their meal.

Attrocious

I've eaten these beans for years. A few months ago they got swapped for the vegetarian version on a grocery pickup order, and those were absolutely disgusting, but I thought it was just that version. Today I buy the regular tradition and omg, they taste exactly the same. The ingredients on the can also don't match the website, and I know for a fact those two additions are what's making them awful. The tomato paste and sugar. REFRIED BEANS DO NOT NEED TOMATO PASTE AND ESPECIALLY NOT SUGAR. jfc, y'all stop shoving sugar in places it doesn't belong. Absolutely never buying this crap again, I don't care if you change the recipe back or not.

We're so sorry to hear you had a poor experience with our beans. We will definitely share this insight with our team for improvements. This formula change was made in direct response to consumer feedback regarding the dissatisfaction of the color, flavor, and texture on the previous product. The new recipe has a more rounded, savory refried bean flavor; that allows the bean flavor to really come through.
