Customer reviews for Fellow Aiden Precision Coffee Maker forI replaced my Moccamaster with
I replaced my Moccamaster with the Fellow Aiden, and my opinion is mixed. The good: the Aiden makes excellent coffee. If your goal is to dial in flavor and experiment with brew parameters, this machine is outstanding. The level of control is impressive, and once configured properly it produces some of the best coffee I've had from an automatic brewer. For single-cup brewing and recipe customization, it's a fantastic product. I even quickly bought the Opus 2 grinder because I was so impressed with the quality of my morning cup. Unfortunately, batch brewing has been a complete failure for me. I've tried the recommended filters, alternative filters, coarser grind settings, different doses, and multiple brewing configurations. No matter what I do, coffee grounds ride up the sides of the filter and end up in the finished coffee. The basket appears to require a taller filter than the options currently recommended. After extensive testing, I still cannot use batch mode reliably. This is especially frustrating because batch brewing is one of the machine's core features. I didn't buy a premium coffee maker expecting to spend weeks troubleshooting basic functionality. The carafe is also disappointing. Coming from a Moccamaster thermal carafe, I expected much better heat retention. Coffee cools down faster than I would like, making batch brewing even less appealing. I even heat the carafe with hot water in advance in order to keep my coffee from getting a chill. This isn't a deal breaker though, I can live with the sub-par carafe if I could make a batch and transfer it into a third-party thermal carafe when needed. But I can't make a batch. The result is a coffee maker that performs brilliantly in some areas but dramatically falls short in others. If you primarily brew single cups and enjoy tweaking recipes, the Aiden is excellent. If batch brewing is important to you, I'd be cautious until Fellow addresses the basket and filter design issues. If I can't find a filter that works soon, I won't be keeping the Aiden, as good as it is for single cup (1-3) brews.
Doesn't hold the heat
I bought this coffeemaker to get better quality drip coffee. The flavor is amazing however the carafe doesn't hold the temperature long enough. I would've preferred a carafe that holds the temperature. I have to transfer the coffee to a thermal carafe if I want hot coffee.
Not worth it so far…..
Sleek look, but pain in the butt to get brew right and to clean (coffee grinds accumulate on the underside of the top lid and no easy way to clean it). Had high hopes but seems expensive for what you get. Handle on the kettle already came loose by simply rinsing it out, looks like a cheap assembly to the handle.
Great Cups When It Works
Generally I'm a huge fan of Fellow Products (or was), but this is effectively an alpha level tech product. Upon initial release, I had a very positive experience. However, as time continues on, it's clear the backend development process is laughable as the product is actively getting worse. Between sync issues (Aiden -> App works, but App -> Aiden is broken and has been for awhile along with Fellow Drops not syncing whatsoever on it) and now batch brews do not use the proper amount of water that effectively render a 1:10 ratio (at least using a built-in default batch profiles as well as instant brew). However, custom profiles (at least with more than one pulse) do use the correct amount of water (suggesting it's a software or math problem in my opinion), the whatever-is-going-on-behind-the-scenes at Fellow is clearly a problem. The fact Fellow Drops don't sync undermines an aspect of the ecosystem they'd want you in (which I thankfully do not subscribe to so am not impacted by this issue and I would definitely not subscribe given it). When it worked correctly, it produced amazing cups. If you're a patient, tech enthusiast, then I think it may still be worthwhile to get for that aspect of it. If you're looking for something reliable and consistent, then this is definitely NOT the product for you. I have to micromanage all of its quirks far more than any effort I need to put into creating delicious pour overs. Which, if you're a tech enthusiast, may not be a big ordeal. But for the price point, I'd expect something better as you're not even at a beta level to be testing. Ultimately, even with a Fellow-d out brew bar, with a majority of products I'm happy with despite general QA issues (which Fellow has been good at replacing if you are fine with send-in-return cycles), this will likely be the end of the road for me as their products die when warranty no longer covers them. The stuff I have that works consistently has been great, so hopefully that's a ways away, but with this release, it's clear they are broken behind the scenes and that's a harder problem to fix.
Cool and fun new product!
As usual with Fellow products, the Aiden is a well-thought-through device that looks cool on your countertop. They have considered every facet of coffee brewing and come up with a nice solution for it. The coffee profiles are cool - I was one of the early orders and received 3 free bags of coffee and the Aiden automatically loaded the coffee profiles. It brews a good cup or pot of coffee. This latter point is really nice - if you want to brew a pot for 2-3 people, it saves you the time of making a separate pour over for everyone. Some things to know about the Aiden - not negatives but just topics for consideration. I got the Aiden thinking it would be a nice way to save time brewing coffee, particularly for those mornings where I am rushing to get on a call. I would say it might save some time, but only marginally so. You still need to measure and grind your beans, pre-wet your filter, pour fresh water and sift your ground coffee (if you do that). So, the only thing it automates is the actual pouring of the water. But it does that well and the profiles and overall configurability are cool. The one feature I wish it did have is the ability to specify the amount of ground coffee and use that to back your way into the amount of water you need. If you use the Shimmy to sift your coffee, you might start off with 40g of coffee and end up with 35.8g of ground coffee. But there isn't a way to tell the Aiden "I have 35.8g of coffee. Now brew the right amount based on this." The app setup worked fine for me. I have seen some complaints about this but I didn't have any issues. Overall a cool and fun new product and I can imagine them adding more features to it as time goes on.
Nice look and great, basic brewing
I like the overall setup and look. Happy to be able to remove the reservoir for filling, and having the thermal carafe. The brewing can be set up to be push and go, but, overall, the fiddly nature of two different baskets for two different brewing sizes, with a manual set of the water input over the basket, and a kind of number of cups cut off, means that I am not interested in using most of these features....
So worth it! Best coffee maker out there for pour over style coffee.
As a long-time pour-over nerd who used to stand over a Chemex every single morning, the Fellow Aiden has honestly changed my routine. It's the first automatic brewer that doesn't make me feel like I'm compromising on quality for the sake of sleep. What I love most is the "Guided Brew" mode; I just scan the code on a bag of beans, and it handles the finicky temperature shifts and bloom times for me. It's consistent in a way my morning guess work never was.
Great finish result
First - heck of a great cup of coffee - my unit did not heat consistently but a replacement is on the way. The interface is not very intuitive plus if a human is not versed in coffee brewing vocabulary (bloom - pulse as an example) and timings and ratios will be really lost in the weeds. There is no real robust knowledge base on the web site not are the videos very encompassing.
Excellent with minor design flaws
The Aiden makes delicious coffee, especially after some tinkering with the coffee profiles. We only had two very minor issues with the design. First, it is a bit awkward to fill the water tank, especially with the handle covering the middle of the opening to the tank. Second, after the coffee is made, it would be nice to have something that stops the coffee from dripping once the carafe is removed. We have to pull the basket out of the top to shut it off before pulling out the carafe. Other than that, we are very pleased with the machine.
Makes a good cup… when it works
So it does make a good cup of coffee and it looks nice. The problem is that it took a while for us to find a setting that worked and even then we end up ignoring what the UI is saying because it is messed up. We basically just need to do the guided brew and ignore the instructions to get it to actually brew. Every morning we get the error message that it needs more water even though it ran through the maximum and (when we first started) it overflowed with almost boiling water a few times. The carafe also has a horrible pour spout that is guaranteed to spill coffee when the carafe is full. I hope that the much awaited/delayed software update fixes the brew issues (and adds the missing features from the marketing campaign)… but again, good cup of coffee
