Customer reviews for Fellow Aiden Precision Coffee Maker forVery Good Coffee Maker... but not Outstanding
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my wife. This replaced a Cuisinart coffee maker my wife's had for years. The GOOD: It is a great looking coffee maker. Looks spectacular on our counter. TONS of customization features. When brewing, no steam escapes to dampen our cabinets. The "Not so Good": It's 10-cup capacity isn't as big as the Cuisinart's 12-cup, and I hear about it every morning... that she can't have one cup of coffee and STILL fill up her Thermos for work. Also, the carafe isn't as insulated as the Cuisinart's carafe is, so, the coffee eventually gets cold after a few hours. Finally, the handle on the filter basket broke for which I put in a warranty claim. I was a little disappointed by that considering how much we paid for the Aiden. Those things aside, I'd still recommend the Aiden if you want FULL control of your coffee brew. I find I still use my Bialetti, Pour-Over or French Press more than the Aiden.
Cool and fun new product!
As usual with Fellow products, the Aiden is a well-thought-through device that looks cool on your countertop. They have considered every facet of coffee brewing and come up with a nice solution for it. The coffee profiles are cool - I was one of the early orders and received 3 free bags of coffee and the Aiden automatically loaded the coffee profiles. It brews a good cup or pot of coffee. This latter point is really nice - if you want to brew a pot for 2-3 people, it saves you the time of making a separate pour over for everyone. Some things to know about the Aiden - not negatives but just topics for consideration. I got the Aiden thinking it would be a nice way to save time brewing coffee, particularly for those mornings where I am rushing to get on a call. I would say it might save some time, but only marginally so. You still need to measure and grind your beans, pre-wet your filter, pour fresh water and sift your ground coffee (if you do that). So, the only thing it automates is the actual pouring of the water. But it does that well and the profiles and overall configurability are cool. The one feature I wish it did have is the ability to specify the amount of ground coffee and use that to back your way into the amount of water you need. If you use the Shimmy to sift your coffee, you might start off with 40g of coffee and end up with 35.8g of ground coffee. But there isn't a way to tell the Aiden "I have 35.8g of coffee. Now brew the right amount based on this." The app setup worked fine for me. I have seen some complaints about this but I didn't have any issues. Overall a cool and fun new product and I can imagine them adding more features to it as time goes on.
Nice look and great, basic brewing
I like the overall setup and look. Happy to be able to remove the reservoir for filling, and having the thermal carafe. The brewing can be set up to be push and go, but, overall, the fiddly nature of two different baskets for two different brewing sizes, with a manual set of the water input over the basket, and a kind of number of cups cut off, means that I am not interested in using most of these features....
So worth it! Best coffee maker out there for pour over style coffee.
As a long-time pour-over nerd who used to stand over a Chemex every single morning, the Fellow Aiden has honestly changed my routine. It's the first automatic brewer that doesn't make me feel like I'm compromising on quality for the sake of sleep. What I love most is the "Guided Brew" mode; I just scan the code on a bag of beans, and it handles the finicky temperature shifts and bloom times for me. It's consistent in a way my morning guess work never was.
5 star batch brew, sad single-dose brew
Overall, I am really happy with Aiden as a batch brewer and disappointed with the single-dose brew. For context, for the past 5 or 6 years, my coffee routine was a daily single-dose v60 pour over, light roast, acidic/fruity notes. I have some family moving in with me and need a batch brewer that's on par with my v60 experience. For single-dose, I'm going to continue v60ing. I'm not sure if Fellow makes my review public, but if they do, I'll be sure to update the review as I use the brewer over time. Pros: (+) Batch brew flavor quality: The most important criteria for me, and it's a big W! The flavors have been delicious, sweet, fruity, all the good things, from 500mL to 1500mL and in between. Honestly, it may be slightly better taste than my single-dose v60, which is exactly what I was looking for. (+) Ease of use: The removal water tank is goated. I like the wheel knob and the digital display. Configuring a scheduled brew is foolproof. I am glad I don't need the app to get certain functionality, as I generally avoid using my phone for tasks that don't strictly require it. (+) Misc: The water-tight seal of the brewing chamber and the carafe indeed prevent any steam from escaping when brewing *with their carafe*. I really appreciate their design effort here, as I only can fit this in my kitchen underneath a wooden cabinet. (+) Aesthetic: Looks great. I saw some reviews on reddit saying it feels cheap. I could understand that criticism, mainly about the plastic flaps for the water tank, but I don't mind. Cons: (–) Heat retention: The carafe doesn't keep the coffee hot for super long if there's not a really big thermal mass in there. For example, with about 200mL leftover sitting in the carafe 2 hours after brewing, it was not even what I'd call warm. If we're drinking it right away, it's obviously fine. And I definitely don't want the hot plate burning the coffee all day so I understand the design choice. But IMO not super functional for long term heat retention. (–) Single-dose brew: So far, the flavor is a big miss. Tastes like burnt, 1-dimensional, fast-food coffee 😭. I have been meaning to play around with a coarser grind size and/or the default brew settings, but I'm not super motivated to iterate further given my next point... (–) Daily cleaning: Not a big deal for batch brew. But for single-dose, the amount of things to clean is a chore. You have to rinse and dry the basket, dry the basket seal with a paper towel, wipe off under the carafe if coffee drips there, rinse and dry the carafe. And weekly/monthly when I want to properly clean with soap, none of the used components are dishwasher-able. Again, this is IMO acceptable for batch brew, but comparing to the total cost in time of using a v60, it's not even close. Admittedly, after thinking about it, I don't think it's possible to beat a v60 routine in terms of total cost of time while maintaining the same taste. (–) Misc: The water-tight seal straight up does not work if you brew into your own mug. There is so much steam going on the bottom side of my cabinet from a single brew. You need to use their carafe if you want a water-tight seal. Maybe that doesn't matter for your usage. And I think that's a near impossible thing to design. I just wish it was more explicitly advertised. (–) Misc: This is a (hopefully fixable) nitpick, but I don't like in guided brew how you have to insert the basket before it will tell you how much coffee to grind. When I add the grounds, I put the basket out on my counter to add the grounds to make sure if any grounds miss the filter/basket, that they're easy to clean off of my counter rather than on the plastic parts of the Aiden. My habit has been to take the basket out when I start doing guided brew, and then the guide forces me to reinsert before telling me how much coffee to grind. I wish there was a setting to override the behavior. Maybe they can add it with a firmware update. Very minor complaint though. Conclusion: I'm happy enough to keep the machine for its high quality batch brew. Although it's a bit overpriced as I won't be using the single-dose brew much at all. I wouldn't highly advocate this brewer to friends, but I'd say it at least deserves to be in consideration. Sorry for the critical review. It's a new and hyped product and I wanted to make sure there's some content out there for shoppers.
Loving the Aiden!
Overall I am very happy with the Fellow Aiden Coffee Maker. The taste is consistent and even in batch brew feels like a specialty coffee drink. My only reason for not giving it a 5 star is due to the fact that the machine keeps losing wifi connection and I have to unplug and replug it in. The machine looks fantastic, however the plastic materials feel a bit cheap but overall I love this coffee maker!
So consistent and so easy!
100% recommend this machine! There are days when I'm simply enjoying one cup of coffee and other days where I'm making a pot for the whole fam. Knowing that I don't have to do any math early in the morning is an added bonus. The Aiden tells me exactly how many grams of coffee to add. I love that the Aiden is consistent across the board no matter what volume I'm brewing.
It's a keeper, but there are some missed opportunities
This is tough, because I'm overall pleased and I do actually like this generally more than the Breville Precision Brewer which is what I felt was probably the best coffee maker for light roast extraction up until now. (Although I haven't tried the XBloom and hear good things). I do think the Aiden extracts better than the Breville, which ultimately is the most important thing and that's why I'm keeping it and generally satisfied. However, I think there are some gaps that Fellow left which were unfortunate and unnecessary oversights at this price point. So I'll leave these here in case the product team is reading! 1) Carafe - I love how open it is when I take the lid off. It's BY FAR the easiest carafe I've ever cleaned. BUTTTTT it doesn't keep the coffee warm almost at all. Probably doubling the thickness of the double-wall insulation would go quite a long way. 2) The body generally comes across as very "plasticy" - the finish is nice, but I think maybe just sort of the weight of the various lids that you lift feel super lightweight/thin/cheap 3) The DIAL! The dial is awful. It wavers between nonresponsive and intermittently responsive. Turn, wait, seems like it didn't read, turn again and oh wait! It did actually register, so now we've gone past what we were trying to get to. ROUGH. I don't know if it's the dial or the RAM of the electronics or what the deal is... but it genuinely sucks. 4) PLEASE allow me to use Grams and mL and Fahrenheit! Can you maybe just do that in a firmware upgrade? I can't be the only person that uses F but Grams and mL in the coffee world....... why force me to try and convert to Celsius or be forced into Oz but still Grams of Coffee? I dunno... just doesn't really seem to make sense to me. 5) Could you release a rough guide of grind size based on your own Fellow grinders based on the number of cups I'm brewing? Like I have an Ode Gen 2 - I know the general guidance given was ~5 for single serve but ~8 for batch. But I actually usually brew about 4-4.5 cups which is TECHNICALLY batch, but if you push it to 8 it's way underextracted. So it seems like really it's probably more of a continuum where if you're just barely pushing into "batch" mode (e.g. 4 cups) then you should be closer to a 6 than an 8. Could be a downloadable recommendation guide based on # of cups by grinder model, or you could get super fancy and add that as a step in the guided brew. 6) The cord isn't long enough! If you have a real significant coffee bar set up, you're going to use more than two outlets, which means you're inevitably talking about using a surge protector, which means cord needs to go from counter to FLOOR not counter to average receptacle height on the wall. (And yes, I know that basically no coffee maker ever manufactured in the history of the world has ever had a long enough cord, but Fellow is better than everyone else on most of their products, so come on...) 7) App does nothing. I assume that will change someday. But kind of sucks to launch with literally zero functionality on the app but all the QR codes and everything is like "go to the app, that's how you do everything!" and then you get to the app and the app is like "come back at some later completely unknown date in the future because right now we do nothing" 8) This is probably a full redesign concept... and maybe not even really something that even standard filters support, so you probably can't actually do this. But I'll be real honest... 4-5 cups feels like the optimal brew amount. 2-3 cups per person for 2 adults in a household? That's got to be a relatively common amount of coffee to brew. So why does that amount always seem to sit right in no-man's land with any coffee maker? Single serve is up to 3 cups or whatever, so technically 4 cups is Batch. But then you have an almost empty filter (very hard to extract properly) AND with this Aiden I've now dramatically expanded my active showerhead diameter, which feels like making the already difficult extraction due to the mostly empty filter even more difficult. I don't know. I honestly think v60 filters might be the only ones that can genuinely take that ~35ish grams of coffee and sort of optimally treat it. Kalita's would be too small, Melitta 4's probably too big along with the 8-12 baskets that Aiden uses. Again - Aiden does the best extraction I've had so far. But this whole 4-5 cup thing sitting in a middle ground between big and small seems to be a maybe unnecessary structural challenge to overcome? I'll keep it. I'm happy. I honestly just expected a little more probably based on price point and my already exceedingly high expectations of Fellow.
Beautiful Design, Exceptional Performance, and Room for Innovation
The Fellow Aiden coffee brewer has been a fantastic addition to my kitchen. One of the key reasons I chose this brewer is its SCA certification, which ensures a consistently high standard of coffee quality. I previously used the Behmor Brazen plus 3.0 since they discontinued the app centric version of this coffee maker, but I was looking for a more advanced and feature-rich brewer—and Aiden has delivered. From a design standpoint, Aiden surpasses my previous machine. Its sleek, modern aesthetic pairs perfectly with my other Fellow products, making it a stylish centerpiece on my countertop. While some have questioned whether it meets Fellow's premium build standards, I personally disagree. Though I wouldn't have minded the use of even more high-end materials, the Aiden still feels solid, well-crafted, and worthy of its price point. The coffee it produces is outstanding—smooth, flavorful, and perfectly extracted every time. It consistently outperforms my manual pour-over attempts, making my morning routine both easier and more enjoyable. The Fellow app is another highlight, adding convenience to the brewing process. However, there's room for improvement. It would be helpful if the app displayed the water level status to avoid guessing whether I need to refill the tank. Additionally, a brew timer showing the elapsed time would be a practical touch with viewing from in the application. Even better, a future software update could enable remote brewing—imagine starting a pre-loaded brew from bed or while getting ready just before walking out the door. And while waiting for the brew to complete ,why not allow the game to be available for more fun while waiting? There are a couple of design tweaks I'd love to see. While I'm not asking for a traditional pause-and-serve feature, I do think Aiden could be engineered to prevent dripping when removing the carafe something that could double as a pause-and-serve option for some users. Not ideal for purest but even after the brew is completely finished I still get drips that make the machine unnecessarily dirty Additionally, a cleaning setting with guided steps on both the machine's screen and the app would simplify maintenance. Finally, the carafe could be enhanced to hold the coffee at an optimal temperature for longer. It's great for the first cup, but I'd love if my second cup stayed just as hot and flavorful without needing to use an Ember mug to slightly raise the temperature. Overall, I'm thoroughly impressed with the Fellow Aiden. It combines beautiful design with excellent brewing performance, making it a standout machine. While there's room for some thoughtful software and hardware refinements, it already makes better coffee than I ever could with a pour-over. If you're looking for a top-tier brewer that offers both style and substance, I highly recommend the Fellow Aiden.
Beautiful, and great coffee. But the pour spout dribbles
Love everything about Aiden except the fact that the pour spout dribbles when the thermos is about 3/5 full or more. It really is a downer since the design is so clean and beautiful. I worry that over time, coffee drips will stain the pure white exterior.
