[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got to try the Rio Mare Solid Light Wild Tuna in Olive Oil through the Stellar Panel, and I’ve gotta say—it’s some of the best canned tuna I’ve had. The texture is nice and firm, not mushy like most, and the flavor is clean with just a little richness from the olive oil. I made a quick tuna salad with it, and honestly didn’t have to add much—it was good all on its own. It does cost a little more than your typical can, but you can definitely taste the difference.

The first thing you notice when opening the can is the aroma. It smells like quality tuna—not overly fishy, just clean and inviting. The flavor matches the aroma perfectly. It’s mild, smooth, and incredibly pleasant. Unlike some tunas that have a strong fishy taste, this one is balanced and flavorful, making it hard to stop eating. In fact, I had to resist the temptation to eat it straight out of the can. Instead, I mixed it with a little mayo and some chopped Italian green olives, making sure to include the olive oil from the can. The result was an easy spread that complemented the tuna perfectly and made a fantastic sandwich spread. My only complaint isn’t about the tuna itself—it’s the can. Opening it can leave some sharp edges. Thankfully, a side-cut safety can opener solves that issue. Bottom line: this tuna is seriously addictive. I’m not much of a cook and I prefer simple meals, but I was surprised that the texture didn’t really cream up very well with the other ingredients. The flavor was also much stronger than I had expected. I think it would’ve been better in a tuna salad. Overall, it was a good tuna melt, I just think this particular tuna was a little drier than I was expecting. I think the price for this product is little high as well.

It's hard to describe the taste specifically, but it's not "too fishy." The tuna is packed very densely in the can, but breaks apart well. I think this is a good middle-ground of quality vs. price, there are some high end tuna products that may be better, but will also cost you a lot more. I made a tuna salad with it and it felt richer than I was used for, which is a positive. Aside from the freshness, the actual taste did not vary much compared to other brands, and the 5 times increase in price is not worth it. If the price was twice as much as other brands I would consider buying it since it really does taste much fresher!

Overall, I think it’s a good-quality product with a clean, fresh taste that makes it really versatile for different meals like sandwiches, salads, or wraps. That said, my main critique is the texture. I personally prefer my tuna to be a bit more moist, and this one leaned on the drier side right out of the package. Because of that, I found myself needing to add extra mayo to get it to the consistency I enjoy. Once I did that, though, it came together really nicely and had a great flavor. I also appreciated that it didn’t have an overly “fishy” taste, which can sometimes be an issue with canned tuna. It felt like a solid, reliable option that would work well for quick meals, especially if you don’t mind customizing the texture a bit. I’ve made tuna pasta, tuna salad and mainly just plain with a tad bit of salt and pepper as a quick snack (3 kids under 3). The olive oil makes it almost buttery, helps with flavor and you don’t have to use as much mayo making tuna salad. If you love tuna try rio tuna in olive oil and see what you think.
