Love love love it!

Makes the best ice & super easy to clean. The only thing is that I wish it didn't automatically make ice everytime you get ice from it. It'd be good to make on demand or request vs just triggering to make every time you take a scoop. Still - my favorite “appliance”. Use it literally every day & I'm probably more hydrated because of it.

I finally bought one

I've been eyeing the opal machines for a couple years, wanting to buy one but not wanting to pay the premium. Recently, refrigerator's ice maker quit working. I tried to fix it, replacing the intake valve and filter, but was unsuccessful so I thought it would be great to have some of that chic-fil-a ice and bought the opal 2. So far, it's been great. I set a schedule for it to turn on a couple hours before I wake up and an hour before I get home from work. I stock pile the leftovers in my broken ice maker's bin and I always have ice. It was easy to set up, starts making ice in about 30 min and is full after about 2-1/2 hrs. It's great for cocktails tea or sodas. I take a yeti cup full of it to work with me and have a few drinks worth of ice for the day. I'm really enjoying the machine. It was a little surprising how large it was, but I'm not sure really what I expected. I'm hopeful that it will last for years to come.

Decent good ice maker

Overall the ice maker is good and does the job it was designed for but from initial installation I notice, what i think is, a flaw. When the machine starts to make Ice, it spill water out at first few seconds that went into ice bin. If there was some kind of "mesh" just before the spill over for the ice it would allow the water to fall back into the reservoir and not into the bin with the ice. I also think that the ice bin is a little small. 3 lbs? Maybe the 5 to 10 lbs range would be better.

Last less than a year!

I was very happy with this ice maker for literally 10 months. It started making weird niches then and about a month later made the worst sound so we had to stop using it. For this price, and the company name, I thought it would last a few years at least. I'm so disappointed!

Would buy it again but would like some changes

The ice this thing produces IS "The Good Ice". It is really worth the money if you are a ice cruncher like my wife and I. What would I change? When you pull out the tray to get ice water will ALWAYS drip on the drip tray in the front because the ice will slowly melt over time and the water is re-claimed by it running below the tray and gravity causing it to follow into the reservoir below. However there are always drops on the bottom of the ice compartment as a result that always fall on the drip tray. A redesign of the ice holding area with the floor put at an angle would probably solve this problem. It wouldn't stop me from buying another machine but it would make it so much better. Second issue, I wasn't able to get my phone's wifi to see the ice maker. Some of the settings they were asking me to change don't exist in Android 7 so I am thinking this is expecting android 9 or 10 at least. When I get my new phone I will try again. Connecting to the icemaker through wifi really isn't a big deal for me so it's not a huge problem.

Not at all happy with this product.

The ice maker ran for about two months. It then started to make squeaking noises. We cleaned it. We defrosted it. Nothing seemed to work. Finally it we into defrost mode and would not produce ice, no matter what we did. By the way, we never used tap water. We use distilled water.

I love the ice but...

The ice is almost like the ice you get at Sonic or some other places except it is just a little less airy and soft. I chew on ice all day due to dry mouth from medications and this doesn't break my teeth. I have only had it for a few weeks but I already having an issue with it. When the ice fills up and stops making more, it will not resume making ice when it melts down or you use some. I have to turn it off then back on to make it work. Other than that, I love it.

The Bomb!

My wife has a crush on sonic ice. This is the closest we have come to that product, and it's the bomb. The only word of caution I would offer, is this. Follow the directions for cleaning religiously. Water is full of minerals that WILL eventually cause you issues. We ran ours for about 18 months before sediment built up. It took a couple of days of cleaning cycle with vinegar to remedy. We then invested in a side tank and added the water filter and regularly clean it (although still not as often as we should), and it's had no further issues. I can't imagine a future where we don't have this machine.

Purchasing Second Opal Ice Maker

Currently I own an Opal Ice Maker Model#OPAL01GEPKT. I believe we bought it in early 2019. The machine has always performed to my expectations. There were times in the beginning that I had issues but read the manual and the GE online website for additional tips. #1 Clean the machine with 1 teaspoon bleach mixed with 5 cups of water and rinse at least three times every seven days. It is not a big deal and have learned to add it to our kitchen clean up after dinner. #2 Every two months I would run white vinegar through the cleaning cycle and keep it in the machine for at least 18 hours then drain and run clean water through at least 3 times. This sound like a pain but understand what water can do to the system even though we use distilled water only. Calcium still has a way of getting in the system. #3 Keep vents open and un obstructed on both sides allowing for the coil to suck in air for cooling similar to what an air conditioner return air does in your house. #4 I found it very helpful to vacuum the vent which houses the coil and sometimes I would spray a can of condensed air into the vent to keep the coils clear. As of this week, we started hearing a loud rattling. After inspecting the machine I realized it was the fan motor that cools the coil. It eventually stopped working. Since the machine is close to 4 years old I decided rather than try to fix it if even possible due to age, we purchased a new model. I am in real estate management and understand the intricacies to refrigerated equipment and know that most sealed systems cannot be fixed. We feel that we got our money's worth out of the ice maker and was satisfied enough to purchase a new one. However with anything that has water running through it, you still have to perform maintenance. I hope this review will help others in deciding if the Opal Ice Maker is worth the purchase which we feel it is.

Hard working machine

I bought this for my daughter who loves chewy ice! I saved for a couple of years to be able to afford it so I did my research! This was her Christmas present and it has made the entire family so happy! This machine is hard working and keeps the ice coming if it senses it's getting low. The app capability to mange it is icing on the cake with my daughter she checks on it when she's at school (LOL) via her phone! Don't hesitate to purchase it's an amazing little machine and now we have our own chewy ice no more trips to the gas station to get the bag of chewy ice! We love our opal! My daughter plans to take it with her to college next year!
