- 4 out of 5 stars review6/13/2025We have had several Ice Machines and this machine is very easy to use and operate. Its amazing how much Ice we use. I dont run our city water thru the machine to much hard minerals. We go thru a 5 gallon filter water jug in about two week. Lots of ice.

It was a very expensive ice machine, but it made the kind of ice that I was looking for. Within months, this machine turned into a nightmare. The machine itself is extremely heavy and the only way to clean it is to pick it up and physically dump out the water and cleaning product from the reservoir. I have to do this almost weekly because the machine is not refrigerated and the motor runs hot so it creates a green moldy bacteria film very rapidly in the ice bucket. I even use purified bottled water. If you do not keep the machine on and running, the ice melts and the reservoir over flow and leaks everywhere! In order for it not to do t...

We are having dificulties in storage ice in bags, the ice that came out of the machine has a high level of not crystallized ice, and once in the bag, the ice sticks and form blocks. After 15~20 minutes ice was in the fridge, I punch the bag and ice loose, this has help to keep the ice loose, but this is not something that should keep you away.

The size of the unit is small enough to be not be cumbersome, but makes a good amount of ice daily. It has a sleek design, so it looks simple and unassuming. The size and softness of the ice is perfect for all types of drinks- I especially enjoy it with soda, iced tea, and making smoothies.

It worked well until it didn't, making super loud noises like grinding and then squeals. To their credit, GE replaced it as it was under warranty and since the original Opal wasn't being made anymore, they sent us the Opal 2. Unfortunately, the ice is hard and not like the original Opal. The ice comes out shaped like the original Opal but it's hard like getting crushed ice out of a freezer. I don't think sending this one back would help. It's like the ice freezes way too hard, it even looks different than the original one we had.
Not like our Opal 1, this ice is rock hard

A couple things I wish were different are how often it needs cleaned- the ice starts tasting funny after a few days and the machine needs cleaned... didn’t expect it to be this often and it’s a little bit of a process to clean it. Also the hq app constantly says no internet when I have full internet- so I have to close out and try again just to chance one thing on a schedule, and often times even closing out of it, it does the same thing- it’s super frustrating! Am I glad I have it? Yes. Would I spend this amount on it knowing what I know now? No!

I have tried fixes online which work for a day and then start again. Big disappointment for the money spent. A year warranty is ridiculous when it’s a faulty product without the option of an extended warranty.

I would make my husband and daughter pick up bags of ice every 2-3 days, and it would take up so much freezer space. I must say I’m so glad I got this bundle of joy.!!! Only thing I wish I did was purchase the one that has a tank on the side but it’s a bite much having to pull the whole tray out just to refill the tank with water. But I’m still satisfied. It doesn’t take long at all to fill up the tray with ice at all.

Decided to take a chance and what a great surprise we discovered the first batch. The opal II has made approx. 20lbs a day every time we use it and we have yet to be bothered by excessive noise. It's a great machine and a big addition to our home.

It's ability to replenish enough ice is incredible! I would buy it again for sure. If there were any negatives I would say this: 1. When the room is quite the sound is very noticeable. Not annoying but noticeable. 2. Cleaning - It is not hard to clean but it is very time consuming.

It seems to always be full. As quick as we come back for more; it’s full again. It's easy to clean, and to be able to drain the water after cleaning it. I love that it can light up, so you can see in there, if you need to get ice when the kitchen light is off. It makes the best chewable ice, that keeps your drinks so cold!

We found when powering the unit on there was some thin blue plastic bag type material floating on the inside causing noise. I was able to pull out the plastic with some tweezers from the side. You buy American you get these kinds of quality issues. It does make ice and runs better than v1 opal. Not sure I'd recommend it

Can be noisy when first filling up or defrosting but noise reduces as more ice is produced. Makes ice within 20 minutes as stated but takes approximately 30 for a full cup. Takes up a decent amount of counter space but not much more than a typical countertop toaster oven. The wifi capability makes scheduling easy. If you like the crunchy, “Sonic” ice, this machine does the job.
