Ice is good at first but no matter how much we run the clean cycle the side tank won’t keep working and has started to rust and leaving rusty water in the tubes.

Great ice maker! It’s a game changer and I drink so much more water because I love this ice so much!

After the ice maker failed in our Brand new refrigerator, we started using counter top bullet shaped, ice makers. They have all worked great. When it was time to replace the last one, we decided to upgrade to the GE Opal 1.0 with nugget ice. We chose this model because it made the smaller nugget ice, had a reservoir & is Not a smart, wi fi connect machine. I will admit I wanted this type of ice & this GE model; my husband is thriftier than me & is holding his opinion until he sees if it was worth the extra money!

It was pretty easy to setup. However, despite correct setup -it wouldn’t make ice and was just stuck on “add water” forever even though there was plenty of water in the side tank. After a couple of hours, we just crossed our fingers and selected “cleaning cycle” and let the thing run for a bit. The next morning, it worked like a dream. Once you get it to work, it makes perfect nugget sized ice and QUICKLY too. I turn the machine on 20 min before I’m hosting a party and it just does its thing. We bought silicon containers to store the excess in the freezer for when we don’t consume it all. It’s been a few months now where we use this thing regularly and no complaints so far!

So far this nugget ice maker has been perfect. This unit is replacing a slightly cheaper model with a similar design, minus the separate water tank. Our previous ice maker was a Newair and it only lasted 18 months. The new GE ice maker makes better ice, and is definitely quieter. We also really love the side tank and being able to fill the water without removing the ice bin. My only complaint about this unit is that you need to be aware that filling the tank when the ice bin is full could cause an overflow. We filled the tank, and then let an almost full bin of ice melt back into the reservoir which caused water to flow back to the tank and spill over. Beware of gravity and basic physics! Other than that, this has been a great appliance for us. Hopefully it lasts for a few years.
