Turbo Tax Is Getting Worse and Worse

I feel like the experience got significantly worse from last year. The interface was less intuitive. The in-app advertising made it difficult to downgrade plans. The app was buggy and I definitely didn't finish on time. The expert advise thing was pushed in my face for no reason. I suspect your product managers are at fault for this. The app was buggy too. Renew your focus on the user experience; stop focusing on vanity metrics or inflating your resume.

Reliable and mostly easy to use tax prep service.

Our income taxes aren't particularly complicated. We have some interest income from bank savings, and we both retired last year, but we aren't self-employed, don't own any properties other than our primary residence which we've lived in for many years, don't have any uncommon deductions or credits, and no unusual tax situation. Still, it's very convenient to use TurboTax, the cost is reasonable (though it's gone up), and the online interface is easy to use, provides useful prompts, is not slow or glitchy, and has been reliable. Overall, it's a satisfactory way to do taxes. One minor complaint: when returning to TurboTax after logging out, or when navigating out-of-sequence to the different tax prep sections, TurboTax makes you re-do a number of steps that you've already completed. The repetition can be tedious.

Needs improvement

Importing my W-2 from ADP didn't work at all, and every year I import my Robinhood forms I always have to correct the 1099-MISC/DIV/INT or classify any rewards received from them. It's stressful and annoying. Idk why it's been unable to automatically process and classify these since at least tax year 2021 (the tax year I started using Robinhood). Charging this much for services that don't fully function every year is false advertising and costly to me. I never hit the estimated time to file because of this. It always takes about 3 hours instead of 1.5hrs. I can't wait for a free government provided alternative.

POOR PRODUCT EVERY YEAR

POOR PRODUCT

FORMAT CHANGES EVERY YEAR AND VISIBILITY TO ACTUAL TAX FORMS IS IMPOSSIBLE. THIS IS NOT TRANSPARENT AND I DO NOT FEEL CONFIDENT IN THE PRODUCT. IT IS HARD TO DO A BACKDOOR ROTH IRA AND THE INFO DOES NOT TRANSMIT CORRECTLY TO MY STATE RETURN FOR PA. OVERALL I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED AND WILL LOOK FOR A DIFFERENT PRODUCT FOR NEXT YEAR.

turbo tax online big disappointment

Online experience terrible slow and complicated. Advertised transfer from previous years filing not working, never been a problem before with the desk top version. Wasted hours and hours typing all info from scratch. next tax season have to evaluate witch way to proceed.

TurboTax Online is quite different from TT desktop

My first experience with the online product, but have used desktop for over 20 years. I prefer the desktop, but had not converted to Win 11 for my desktop. Waiting until after going thru the filing info to review the 1040-SR and state tax forms was a major pain - made it difficult to review the info on the forms. If I had long pauses to check documents and other info, TT timed out and I had sign in again and review multiple forms over and over. TT online did not transfer 2024 efile info - maybe that was not included in the upload of my desktop 2024 information. I did not see a way to review the actual IN IT-40 forms - disappointing. My Department of Defense 1099R did not have a box 16b for distribution of state withholdings - I just entered the amount of withholdings in the TT form - that enabled me to continue. I feel confident that TT prepared my forms properly. I missed the former desktop final review format which, among other things, showed audit risk.

State Filing Fee

I am highly disappointed to find out that after I completed my state return, I would have to pay $59 to complete the return. My option was to delete the State return it in order to file my Federal Return. I have used Turbo Tax for years, and I was always able to complete my state return, eFile the Federal and print the State return and Mail it and not pay an extra fee. I never was forced to delete my return. When I purchased Turbo Tax Deluxe, it implies state is included. Did not mention you will do all the work to complete the state form, but if you don't pay, you are forced to delete it.

Would've been great if not for the deception.

Everything was great except the payment process. I wanted to pay with my debit card but the amount that was quoted was not the amount that was attempted on my card so it did not go through. It was attempting to take $7 more dollars than I authorized on my card so I had to choose for it to be taken from my tax return. Even though it wasn't that much over the amount it really didn't sit well with me. Shows no integrity and cost me $40 instead. It definitely took away from the experience.

Instructions are not clear but rather deceptive

Everything was great until it was time to pay for filing. There are fees for everything and selection information of what is optional and how it effects your processing time is not clear. The e-filing which is processed 5 days earlier, did not appear to be a requirement. That information is not clear when going through the completion process.

Disingenuous In-line Product/Marketing

The product selection for 2025 taxes felt "scammy." As a long-term customer, I was disappointed by the 2025 tax year product selection workflow, which lacked the transparency I’ve come to expect. Specifically, the 'Expert' add-on was presented early in the process without a clear 'opt-out' or 'remove' button. Despite declining the service in subsequent screens, the upcharge remained in my final invoice. The lack of a 'remove' option within the billing summary itself is particularly problematic. Requiring users to navigate to a separate side-menu to recalculate their bill feels disingenuous and creates a significant barrier for less tech-savvy users. I hope to see a return to a more straightforward, less "scammy," and honest interface in future updates. If these marketing and sales tricks remain, I will consider using a different product.
