Turbo Tax - 10 years of use, the worst version

This year was torture. My small business was changed to having kids in my home for day care because my position is teacher at a dog sport business!!! I could not file my federal return because I had to pay for the state return first. Your method of adding a credit card would not let me enter any number below what was on the screen months 1 - 8. All of my credit cards had expirations in months 9 - 12. Stupid reason for not being able to file my return!!!

No More Mailed Checks

Overall, filing my taxes was simple and I was satisfied with the process. The one major complaint I have this year what at the end when trying to e-file my federal return. As in the past there are to options to receive your refund, mailed check or direct deposit. Unfortunately, I found out as of Sept. 1, 2025, the IRS is no longer mailing checks. I received a letter from the IRS that now I have to submit my bank information for direct deposit. The software needs to be updated to remove or notify that the mailed check is no longer an option. And now, it is a major pain process for me to get on the IRS site and submit my bank information in order to get my refund.

Overall very good tool.

Secify what browser should be used for bank and investnment transfers. MicroSoft Edge and Firefox dont work well. Only Google Crome. It would save the customer time by not having to call for technical support to rersolve a browser compatibility issue.

Pay to Play (and then Pay to File)

The interface is reliable enough, but the value is plummeting. Paying a premium for the Desktop software only to be hit with processing and filing fees feels like being charged a ‘table fee' after buying a full meal. The software experience itself is a bit dated—clunky navigation and constant upsells for services I've already theoretically paid for. It works, but the 'convenience' comes with a hidden tax that leaves a bad taste

Painful Data Entry

The user interface in this year's program was obviously a major re-write: it had more bugs and an ant hill. In past years I began entering data in late February or early March, and finished after 3 or 4 days work. This year required more than a month of calendar time, much of which was spent searching for bug work-arounds. Some examples: The "Edit" and "Delete" buttons on investment data entry screens were colored dark grey, and presented on a very slightly lighter grey background. I discovered them only by accident; they're almost invisible. I have used 3 methods for paying federal taxes: (1) by paper check with my return, (2) quarterly estimated tax payments, and (3) withholding tax funds from distributions from investment firms. When figuring my outstanding tax due for this year, Turbo Tax recognized only two of those sources as tax payments, leaving a large "obligation" of overdue taxes. This snafu was typical of many of the bugs I encountered: if I quit Turbo Tax for 2 or 3 days and then updated the software, the bug had been fixed.

Please include state filing fee w purchase

I would rate 5 stars if the company would include E-filing with the State in the cost of the desktop software. Also I almost payed $45 dollars rather than the advertised $15 to e-file state because I select pay with my refund. "Premium Service fee" or something like that you need to uncheck! Come on people!

TurboTax Makes it Easy To Do My Own Taxes

All of the pre-set questions and guidance in the TurboTax program really helped guide me through the entire process. I've used TT for many years now and I've learned to navigate the process pretty well. There were two or three points where I had to stop and read the directions and requirements for certain areas again to refresh my memory of my proper filing information. But these notes and details helped me resolve my issues without having to reach out for additional assistance. That's why I like TT so much. It guides me through the process and helps me enter the right information. Several years ago I was concerned I was missing information because my numbers seemed off. So I took my files to an accountant who charged me $275 to review and confirm my information!! My returns were basically correct, with the exception of one are I had entered incorrectly. This proved to me that TT was right on target and I've never looked back and I've been doing my own taxes with full confidence ever since. The program features are easily compatible with my system, although I did have to upgrade to Windows 11, but no further support was needed. I started on the Internet version this year, but transitioned to the desktop interface, simply because this was the format I was accustomed to.

Eyestrain

What I would really like is if you made the font size readable. You've got this whole big window and the information takes up a small part of it for most pages. You could make the font quite a bit larger and all the information would still fit. I get eyestrain every time. Don't suggest adjusting the font with my screen options BECAUSE THEN THE BUTTON TO ADVANCE DISAPPEARS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE ! and you can't scroll down to it.

I had some issue this year.

I got stuck with a login issue, I used the Live Tax advice and quickly resolved the issue. Then I got stuck with the Federal Review and / Fix. The form would not advance. I used Live Tax advice again, however we went through lots of menus of grayed out options (likely due to I'm on a Mac). So I started my taxes again from the start. I got to the same section again. Then I had to pay for Live Tax Advice again, since I lost my previous privilege. The person I got to this time quickly showed me how I had to verify and validate my 1099's and cleared up everything. From there everything worked AOK.

Turbo Tax has become marginally useful

Turbo tax used to have "it's deductible" which made summarizing no cash contributions straightforward. Now you have to click multiple times for every item. Turbo tax also used to provide an estimated tax for the next year from your previous year's taxes. Now you have to manually enter the information you already entered for your taxes in the w-4 form calculator. Turbo tax used to have understandable help and descriptions for items you are working on. Now they generally copy the incomprehensible IRS documentation and make you pay extra for live expert advice.
