TurboTax is great but need improvement on IRA

Having used TurboTax for many years, but only this year I have some issues with it. I have a special issue to input with Return of Excess Roth IRA into a brokerage account, rather than Recharacterization of the excess Roth IRA contribution。 Have to manually create substitute 1099-R while waiting for my official one next January。

turbotax is becoming harder to use

when importing, your system does not fill in last year's 1099. it creates a new 1099 for the same institution and i have to delete last years. i also have another problem with the import function, but i don't know how to describe it other than it's cumbersome to get back and identify each different type of 1099 and start over. i think the prior years import was not as inefficient as 2025.

Turbo Tax is a helpful software to do your taxes.

Confusing on some questions within the software to specific forms and answers to questions. Could be more detailed on instructions for filling out some forms. Also, not easy to contact for a quick specific question as the help online search doesn't get you to the answer, when you need to ask a specific question of a real person.

Terrible look with Washington State

Major problem with accessing correct state form. Somehow you think everyone needs to file income taxes in Washington State (not true) and make that the free state download. Yes, some folks will need to file to claim a tax credit, but most do not. Some of us would prefer to use the free state download on another state (in my case, California due to assets related to inheritance). Sounds like a corporate trick to make more money by trying to force me to buy the California download when I (and many others) do not need the Washington State program such as it is.

Data input issue: Box 16a of CSA-1099-R

The process went well until I was ready to file and hit a snag that should have been fixed by now. I have a 1099-R from the OPM. When going through the review, I'm told I have to enter the State Distribution (box 16a) in Turbotax. The CSA-1099-R from OPM does not have a box 16a. Here's link to the solution: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/retirement/discussion/i-have-a-1099-r-from-the-opm-when-going-through-the-review-i-m-told-i-have-to-enter-the-state/00/3542212

Unethical Business practice

I will be actively looking for opportunities to ditch turbotax next year for your unethical business practices. I purchased premier desktop with a $25 fee for state efile. When starting it prompted me to select online and said it was free after finishing, to file would have cost me 270 dollars. So I went to desktop and was unable to import my completed return so I redid it on desktop and when I went to file the option to pay with a card was not working (probably a turbotax policy) so I had to pay an additional $40 to use the refund to pay and amazingly that worked, who would have thought. I think there are now better options than turbo tax.

Cannot recommend 2025 turbotax

There were problems downloading my investment information. There was a stuck loop after completing my state tax that kept bringing me back to download your state. Unlike the previous 10 years of using Turbotax, I cannot recommend 2025. There were far too many glitches and issues.

Suggestions on improvement

Everything is very good except 2 things need to be improved : 1. NJ State case: There is one special case: In TIAA Retirement funds (403B), retirees already paid the state tax, however, the software has difficult to understand it, even more difficulty to handle it clearly (adjust cost, and decide taxable and excludable pars). 2. The speed and accuracy, the overall quality to respond/answer customers' questions are not very good. For many cases, the AL tools such as Gemini and ChatGpt are much better.

Turbo Tax needs better online instructions

I have used TurboTax for many years. I like the software very much except the 2025 version. When I tried to e-file my returns, TurboTax told me that I need to fix an error in the Federal Carryover Worksheet for missing State/Local ID. The instruction for fixing the error is TurboTax on that worksheet is useless. I spent over 2 hours to figure out how to fix the error. I brought additional State return which I did not need to file a return for less than $10000 taxable income from that state. I went over two times of Federal Return to make sure that all input data were correct. Finaly I accidently fix the error on the Carryover worksheet; Now I still have no idea what cause the error

1099-Q step-by-step was all messed up

Despite the 529 to Roth rollover having been effective for a few years, and the changes to the 1099-Q being relatively minor, it was still not working through the step-by-step process. One question about box 6 was doing the opposite of what it should have been doing. I had to manually edit the 1099-Q worksheet to ensure it was accurate. This wasted time and energy and was extremely frustrating. in the community, tax experts were redirecting me to IRS documents. What's the purpose of the step-by-step if I have to go through those documents? Intuit needs to do better because your 2025 version was the worst ever after using it for 30 years!!
