Turbo Tax is Great for preparing and filing taxes

Turbo Tax is very easy to use, covers all the tax areas, prompts you for the information that is needed and is easy file your taxes electronically. If I had to manually prepare my taxes each year it would take forever and Turbo Tax makes it possible to file my taxes in only a few hours.

We love hearing that the process felt effortless for you. Taxes are complicated enough, so we’ve designed our interface to take the guesswork out of every step.

Awful

Don't waste your money. TurboTax has become a masterclass in predatory upselling. Last year, using IRS Direct File was a much smoother, honest experience. It was straightforward, free, and didn't involve being hassled to "upgrade" every five minutes. Now that we've seen how simple filing directly with the IRS can be, paying TurboTax's exorbitant fees, especially their ridiculous $60+ charge just for state returns, feels like a total scam. Skip the corporate bloat and find a service that doesn't treat your tax return like a hostage situation.

turbo tax premiere

Tried TurboTax online (free version?) but was not able to add all my income. Purchased TurboTax Premiere so that I could include all my income. Was done with income and ready to start next when program locked up. Lost all the data. Started again and finally able to finish on the third try.

RMD section needs improvement

The section on RMD's could be better. I found it extremely difficult to appropriately enter the data since I only withdrew retirement money from one (I have 2) of my IRA accounts. I withdrew the correct amount from the one account since I totaled all RMD from both and withdrew that amount fro just one, but trying to find the correct way within the program was not at all intuitive.

TurboTax continues it's degradation

The tax preparation functionality seems as tight and accurate as it ever was, and the Premier product covers all my needs. This would earn it 5 stars except for an increasing number of other problems, some unaddressed for several years. By far the major problem is the activation process. Two years ago I ran out of activations, even though I never installed TT on more than one computer. Last year I barely made it to the end. This year, I couldn't even install it and migrate my data from last year's return without burning up one extra activation. The insane plea at the beginning for me to use online TT (after spending money to purchase it) cost me one activation when I clicked Cancel. Awful! After that, I never quit TT, I ejected all external drives, disconnected Ethernet and all USB devices, and avoided updating any other software. This is not by any stretch of the imagination user friendly! The idea of sharing it with my children is a fantasy. Congratulations, they have to buy their own copy. Guess Intuit is making money, but I call this false advertising. I've been a TT user since it was first released as MacinTax, but if this activation debacle continues I'll seriously be looking at other tax prep software. I was forced to keep my TT files in Documents which as a Macintosh user I avoid for everything else because so much disorganized junk gets stored there. At first I couldn't even open last year's return to do the migration until I moved it into Documents. Thank God I read the community posts about activation and noticed one PC user talking about the location of TT files. The UI is burdened by intrusive and repetitive marketing for Intuit services I do not need or want. It's fine to offer them up front and near the end, but please, save me dozens of unneeded clicks by keeping intrusions to a minimum. There are many other wasted click examples. Every year I've been advised that I could reduce taxes by putting money away for retirement (I'm already retired). Click. No, I actually don't qualify. Click again. The revised UI to enter Interest, Dividends, and Gain seems like the developers didn't finish changing from the old UI to a new one, which is a lot harder to understand than the old one. More wasted clicks. I was asked if I still have the same banking and investment accounts as last year. When I imported my information from the institutions, TT created new entries for each fund or institution. Many more clicks to investigate and delete the unused original duplicated entries. I could go on, but this is a summary of my experience.

My favorite tax software

I have used Turbo Tax for years to file taxes for myself and my mother's rental properties. The software is so user friendly and helpful. I will never go back to paper and pencil or a tax service that charged me too much for something the is so easy to do.

Confusing software changes

Software interface keeps changing each year without adding any benefit to the user. The input for Dividends, Interest, and Capital Gains was changed this year from last year, and this caused me consternation and confusion. I liked the previous interface for including that information. Pull the plug on the software writers so they will leave working software alone!!

Still wonky, not intuitive

It's a very wonky bit of software. I've used TT online for years and switched to Desktop this year because the interview process is so poor re K1 forms. It is surprising that the user interface is not improving despite advances in AI--which I used to overcome confusion with working with TT. Hard to see TT survive Claude et al.

Software Problems this year!!!

I've been using TT for several years. This is the first time I had to fight with it. (1.) It wouldn't import all the Schwab files I selected from a combined 1099 (1099B was missing). Customer service said for me to enter it manually. Not a big deal however the remnants that were imported created multiple entries I had to comb through to remove all duplicates. (2.) I believe it was because of the remnants of the 1099B that caused me to have to upgrade to the premier version, from the Deluxe + State. (3.) I E-filed 3 returns and now the software is telling me I've hit my limit of 5 free E-files. One of the returns had 2 text responses from the IRS as 'accepted' and 'denied' although I only E-Filed in once. Now I get to chase down which returns were successfully filed and which were not. I have yet to receive the text from the IRS that my last e-file was accepted which coincides with the notice that I have reached my 5 free filing limit. I still have a 4th return to file so it looks like I'm in for some more phone time with customer service to get this resolved.

2025 TurboTax is horrible

Whatever changed from 2024 (and previous years) to 2025 TurboTax made it confusing, and I had problems trying to download information from Fidelity. I've used TurboTax for 20+ years, but my experience this year has me considering to find another tax software.
