Consistent burn and temperature, performed perfectly with little ash. Used in my Hunsaker 55 for ribs and probably have enough leftover for two more 3 hour cooks. Now I know why my team mates use The Good Charcoal Company!! Run to Sam's and grab a bag or 10 🤣🤣🤣🇺🇸

Did the Trick

I was expecting lumps, bigger than briquets. They came out thumb to pinky size chunks. Some of it fell out the charcoal chimney with more dust. It had a really nice heat and lasted for quite a while. Tip; When it seems like the coals are low, turn them over with a rake.

Lump Charcoal good enough for the Professionals

Good value and great quality. My husband grills for us year round and became unhappy with the quality of traditional briquettes. Now that he's using lump charcoal, he's much happier and I was pleased to find that Sam's Club carried these at a great price (and free delivery for Plus!).

Quickly goes from lump to chips to pellets.

About 20% is lump charcoal, the next 40% is smaller. the next 20-30 is the size of chips. the remaining is almost the size of pellets. Maybe if you used them all at once, you could get 60-80% lump. But if you're like me to buy in bulk to bring a little at a time to BBQ at the beach or to go camping, it will quickly turn into chips and pellets. Will not be buying this again.

Hey Josh, thanks for breaking that down in detail.
A little size variation comes with the territory on a natural product like ours, but pellet sized pieces aren't what you should be getting. It should be recognizable, usable lump charcoal top to bottom, and that's not what this bag gave you.
We'd like to make it right. Send a few photos to hello@thegoodcharcoal.com and let us know which Sam's Club you grabbed it from and we'll take care of you.

Burns too hot for my liking

I smoke/grill almost every weekend and the smoker is temperature controlled. I had it going at about 225 then I added some of these and it shot up i ln temperature in no time. I’m talking up to 425, caught what I was cooking on fire because it took forever for me to control the temperature. I should have done more research on how this product burned. Price is great for the amount you get. Just for me the downside was this product was just harder to control burning wise.

Hey Ash, Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you found our charcoal to be a great value (We think so too!). We understand your concerns about temperature control, especially when smoking, cooking more delicate foods, or using the low-and-slow methods. Our dense Acacia hardwood charcoal burns hotter than many other less dense options, which can be great for every day grilling but requires more careful management for lower temperatures. We recommend using smaller amounts initially and adjusting as needed. If you'd like to discuss this further or get tips on controlling the heat, please contact us at Hello@TheGoodCharcoal.com. We're here to help.

Smaller pieces

This works for the Big Green Egg. However, the pieces are much smaller than the Big Green Egg brand of charcoal. I find I’m shoveling out more ash, it’s a little harder to start, and temperature is a bit more tricky, because there’s less oxygen between the pieces. So one less star. The price is right, though.

Decent price

This is not the best hardwood lump charcoal but is ok for the price. Compared to other brands we've used for our Green Egg, it is messy. We have a large garbage can that we pour the bags into and store it in. When pouring, black soot was flying everywhere. It also smoked a lot more than other brands, there was a large amount of smoke coming from the grill before even adding food.

No big lumps!!

I was so excited to see this bag of lump charcoal at a really good price. Immediately put one in the cart, almost bought 2, glad I didn't. Not happy with the product. We have a BGE and it burns better and longer with bigger chunks. 4" to 6". This small stuff burns HOT and fast, so we had to really manage our fire way more than usual. Maybe we got a bad bag.

Hey Doris, thanks for the thoughtful review, and sorry this first bag didn't wow you the way the price had you hoping.
We get it. Depending on your Big Green Egg's grate, our natural mix of piece sizes can be a hassle, and that's a fair thing to be frustrated by. One reason for that mix is that we make our charcoal from Acacia bush rather than cutting down trees, which helps preserve forests and protect natural habitat. It's a tradeoff we believe in, but we know it can mean the sizing isn't always perfect for every setup.
On the hot and fast burn, a lot of that comes down to airflow. Acacia is one of the densest hardwoods out there so it wants to run hot, but on a kamado like the BGE that's exactly where you have the most control. Choke those top and bottom vents down and you can hold a long low even burn without babysitting it.
That said, if the piece size keeps being a problem for you, we'd really like to make it right. Send us an email at hello@thegoodcharcoal.com and let us know which store you grabbed it from, and we'll take care of you.

Good product but wear gloves when handling bag.

The outside of the bag is covered with a fine, black dust. Your hands and clothes will get dirty when handling the bag. Also the bag was not stitched up completely closed on the bottom allowing some charcoal to spill out into my car on drive home. I hadn't noticed this defect until I got home. The product works very well, i.e. easy to light, burns hot, good flavor to food.

Dear Billy,We’re so glad to hear you enjoyed how our charcoal burns and its flavor! We understand that charcoal can be a bit dusty and may leave some marks on your hands or clothes. We recommend carrying the bag from the handle to help limit this. As for the bag not being fully sealed, this could have been due to another customer opening it in-store or possible damage during shipping. If you’d like to discuss this further, feel free to reach out to us at Hello@TheGoodCharcoal.com—we’d be happy to chat.Best regards, The Good Charcoal Team
