Useless hardwood charcoal

This was the worst hardwood charcoal I have ever purchased. After opening the bag I divided it into 5 gallon buckets. Of the 5 buckets, 4 contained only charcoal dust and chips the size of my thumb nail. The remaining bucket contained perhaps a dozen chunks the size of my fist once ignited the coal failed to achieve proper cooking temps. Overall I rated this product as a do not buy.

Good product but wear gloves when handling bag.

The outside of the bag is covered with a fine, black dust. Your hands and clothes will get dirty when handling the bag. Also the bag was not stitched up completely closed on the bottom allowing some charcoal to spill out into my car on drive home. I hadn't noticed this defect until I got home. The product works very well, i.e. easy to light, burns hot, good flavor to food.

Dear Billy,We’re so glad to hear you enjoyed how our charcoal burns and its flavor! We understand that charcoal can be a bit dusty and may leave some marks on your hands or clothes. We recommend carrying the bag from the handle to help limit this. As for the bag not being fully sealed, this could have been due to another customer opening it in-store or possible damage during shipping. If you’d like to discuss this further, feel free to reach out to us at Hello@TheGoodCharcoal.com—we’d be happy to chat.Best regards, The Good Charcoal Team

Great Stuff and I will continue buying it.

I started using this lump coal last summer after I first seen it at my local Sam's club. I've used it in my grill as well as my wood burning smoker and have cooked briskets, pork shoulders, ribs, pork bellies, chicken, roast, and steaks. Now I've got 3 cooks in my new gravity feed smoker which the lump coal works well in. In the past I have only bought premium lump coal brands and I have to say this matches any of the premium brands at a better value.

Burns Hot

This charcoal is pretty decent, however, lately, it's gone from lumps to bits. You used to get a bag of jumbo to medium sized lump charcoal. The latest bag I purchased is full of tiny bits of wood. There are still medium sized lumps, but so much of the bag is full of tiny chips, I am not as impressed as I once was with this brand.

Burns too hot for my liking

I smoke/grill almost every weekend and the smoker is temperature controlled. I had it going at about 225 then I added some of these and it shot up i ln temperature in no time. I’m talking up to 425, caught what I was cooking on fire because it took forever for me to control the temperature. I should have done more research on how this product burned. Price is great for the amount you get. Just for me the downside was this product was just harder to control burning wise.

Hey Ash, Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you found our charcoal to be a great value (We think so too!). We understand your concerns about temperature control, especially when smoking, cooking more delicate foods, or using the low-and-slow methods. Our dense Acacia hardwood charcoal burns hotter than many other less dense options, which can be great for every day grilling but requires more careful management for lower temperatures. We recommend using smaller amounts initially and adjusting as needed. If you'd like to discuss this further or get tips on controlling the heat, please contact us at Hello@TheGoodCharcoal.com. We're here to help.

Did the Trick

I was expecting lumps, bigger than briquets. They came out thumb to pinky size chunks. Some of it fell out the charcoal chimney with more dust. It had a really nice heat and lasted for quite a while. Tip; When it seems like the coals are low, turn them over with a rake.

The Good Charcoal lights fast, burns clean

There's charcoal… and then there's what The Good Charcoal Company is doing. This isn't just fuel—it's the quiet co-pilot behind some of my best cooks. From the first spark, you can tell it's different. It lights fast, burns clean, and doesn't throw off that harsh, chemical funk that ruins flavor before you even get rolling. What you get instead is pure, honest heat—the kind that lets your wood, your seasoning, and your technique actually shine. The lump size? Solid. Not a bag of gravel dust like some others. I'm talking real chunks that give you control—whether I'm running a screaming hot sear for a tomahawk straight on the coals or settling into a steady burn for a longer cook. It holds temp like a champ and responds when you adjust airflow, which is everything in live fire cooking. Flavor-wise, it stays in its lane—in the best way possible. It doesn't overpower. It supports. That means when I layer in Tennessee cooking wood or finish with a glaze, I'm tasting what I built… not fighting the charcoal. And here's something that matters to me: it's made from reclaimed wood. So while I'm out here cooking over fire, I'm not burning through forests to do it. That's a win. Bottom line—this is the kind of charcoal that lets you cook with confidence. No guesswork. No weird burns. Just consistent, clean heat that shows up every time. If you're serious about live fire, this isn't optional gear… it's foundational.

Decent price

This is not the best hardwood lump charcoal but is ok for the price. Compared to other brands we've used for our Green Egg, it is messy. We have a large garbage can that we pour the bags into and store it in. When pouring, black soot was flying everywhere. It also smoked a lot more than other brands, there was a large amount of smoke coming from the grill before even adding food.

Love this product

My husband loves this. First time I had bought. We were having a large cook out and somethings need more smoke that you can get from a gas grill. The charcoal lit easily and gave off a ton of heat. We have now cooked everything from pork, salmon to oysters on it. Everything comes out great.
