was very disappointed, no big chunks all very small and it like to smolder the fire out. not the best flavor. would never buy it again. I'll stick with the B%26B which is the best

Hey Thomas, thanks for the honest feedback.
Lump charcoal is going to have a natural mix of sizes since it's 100% hardwood Acacia with nothing added to compress or shape it uniformly. On the flavor side, Acacia is actually one of the densest hardwoods out there with a mild clean burn by design. That's intentional. It gives you a perfect base to add your own wood chunks and build exactly the flavor profile you want without competing wood flavors getting in the way and overcomplicating things.
That said we'd love to understand what you received a little better because what you're describing doesn't line up with what our charcoal typically delivers. Reach out to us at hello@thegoodcharcoal.com with a few photos and let us know which Sam's Club you picked it up from. We're happy to look into it personally and make sure you're taken care of.

Absolutely not.

The charcoal pieces were so small they kept falling through the grates. It felt like most of the bag was unusable because there were barely any full-sized chunks.

The Good Charcoal is the BEST!

I love this lump charcoal! I do a ton of grilling with charcoal and tailgating. It lights fast and burns a long time! Most importantly it is a constant clean burn I highly recommend

Small coals, no air flow, bag is always extremely

I have bought maybe 7 bags of this charcoal for my BGE. It is 80% tiny pieces with no airflow. Terrible bag of charcoal. I’ve used all kinds and am not a snob but this stuff sucks. The bags are always dirty as well, worse than any other brand. It might be “cheap” but I’m passing from now on.

Not the Best Charcoal for a BGE

I'm unhappy to report that my first (and only) attempt to use this charcoal was disgusting and very time consuming. The charcoal chips were so small that they blocked the bowl vents in my Big Green Egg. Consequently, a cook that should have taken 1 1/2 hours took three. Could only get minimum airflow, if any, through the egg, resulting in a maximum achievable temperature of only 225 degrees with both top and bottom vents wide-open. With proper airflow, my egg traditionally reaches a temperature of over 600 degrees, although I never cook that high. This charcoal would probably work OK for grilling, although I haven't tried it, but definitely not for cooking with a BGE!

Will not purchase again

The individual pieces off charcoal were by far the smallest lump charcoal I have purchased. They locked together during burn and produced very little heat after that until they were re-agitated and then they went in a run up temperature wise that hard to control. Will not purchase again.

Hi Joseph,
Thanks for taking the time to explain what you experienced. Lump charcoal shouldn’t be locking together during a cook or behaving unpredictably like that.
Our charcoal is made from dense hardwood acacia, which is designed to burn hot and steady once it’s going, so we’d really like to understand what happened with your bag.
If you’re open to it, please email us at Hello@thegoodcharcoal.com so we can learn a bit more about your setup and take care of you directly.
From The Good Charcoal team

Don't do it

Worst lump charcoal I have bought. Wasn't even lump Charcoal looked more like temu kingsf. Maybe lump charcoal for a Ken and Barbie dream home Grill. The size of a square refrigerator ice cubes. I am not sure if it got beat up and ground down in shipping but the name “The Good Charcoal” is misrepresenting. Should have stuck with what I know

Thank you for taking the time to leave a detailed review. We want to help.
Our product is true hardwood lump charcoal. It is not pressed, molded, or manufactured into uniform shapes. It’s made from dense acacia hardwood, which is designed to burn hot and long once fully lit. Because it’s a natural product, pieces can break down during handling and transport, but it remains real lump charcoal.
We’d like to better understand exactly what you received (photos etc.) and look into this further. If you’re open to it, please email us at Hello@thegoodcharcoal.com and our team will take care of you directly.

Not normal

I didn't read before buying, assuming it was oak or something I've seen before. The chunks are smaller but I was ok with that if they were uniform, which the stuff on top was anyway. When I put it in my chimney starter, the smoke was dark gray, not rolling coal but close. The smell was foul as well. No way am I eating something cooked over that. Now once it was going good the smoke went away of course but the smell was less but still not right. More blue to the flames so it probably does burn hotter. I have 27 pounds of charcoal I won't cook with. I think I'll pour it over a stump I want to get rid of..

Buyer Beware!!!

This is buy far the WORST lump charcoal I have EVER use. I have use lump charcoal for my BGE for over 21 years of various different brands, but never a bag this bad. 95% of the pieces are the size of a quarter or less. There are about 3 pieces that are the size of a golf ball. I will never buy this again, nor recommend anyone to buy it unless you want to be sadly disappointed. Shame on Sam's Club for selling this crap! I wound not use this charcoal again if you gave it to me and paid me $20.

Hi Wes, We appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed review, especially with the experience you have cooking on a BGE.
Our charcoal is real hardwood lump made from dense acacia, not pressed or manufactured pieces. Because it’s a natural product that moves through a long supply chain before reaching the shelf, pieces can sometimes break down during handling along the way.
If you’re open to it, please email us at Hello@thegoodcharcoal.com so we can learn more about the bag you received and help out.
From The Good Charcoal team
