Turbo Tax is a strong product for those who have an accounting background as well as for those who don't. The one thing I wish would change is the messaging for update errors. I believe that one of my state updates didn't load because I hadn't started my state return yet. The messaging didn't say that though, no matter how deep I got into the error messaging. Once I started my state return, the update error went away.

Can't import 1099 from E*Trade, can't correctly auto import W2 Box 14 from household name corporations with 10s of thousands of employees, can not import 1099-B Supplemental common for RSU and Employee stock purchases, doesn't ask you about a federal Identity Protection PIN even if you used on the previous year with TurboTax.

Good interviewing process for tax topics. And simple returns are a snap. However help center connection needs improvement. Hit the icon and got error message. Also, need to work on smoothing out the process for amending returns. These are nuance items though. Good overall.

One suggestion: after e Filing I need to print forms for the Feds. For me I had to attach Form 8949 - two copies. Why didn't the software include those forms in the PDF I needed to print as a follow up for the e-file? I had to go to FORMS VIEW, find the forms, then print the forms from "inside" the data capture process. The software knows what forms need to be printed, it marked the "check box". Why do I need to do what the software already knows how to do and where the data is located?

I've been using TTax for years, product is very good and the e-filing is efficient, but you have to know what you are doing on Joint accounts. One star deducted, when I download 1099s from Fidelity, my wife and I have a joint account so I have to down load from my userid and then from her userid since some accounts appear just under hers. TTax duplicated the common accounts causing taxes owed to be in error. I had to go in and delete the duplicates.

I use Turbo-Tax because I have used it for years. I am familiar with the format. I am not familiar with other tax software, so I cannot say that it is any better or worse than any other product. I would say that state returns are its week point. You would think it would have a link to the state web site and form instructions, but I didn't see it, if it did. When I hit a snag, I save my return, so I can step away and research the problem, find a form or check last year's return, hoping to return to the same location and continue from the same spot. When Turbo-Tax updates, which it does occasionally, and more often after April 15, it takes me back to the beginning when I open my return, and I have to spend time trying to find the question I was trying to answer. I have been using Turbo Tax for years and continue to find that it is the best tax assistant for me. It covers everything and is well designed that, I as a senior who is not as deft with a computer, am able to navigate the program very easily to get my taxes done.

I have loved the Turbo Tax program of prior years, but will not purchase it again because it is not compatible with Apple. I had to restart my imac every time I opened the program to keep it from becoming unresponsive. Now the program will not print or save to a pdf! When I tried to resolve the issue I see that a number of people with Apple computers are having the exact same problem. It is incredibly frustrating to put all of the work required to complete a tax return and have it held hostage by Turbo Tax. There seems to have been some programming design choices that are worse than previous versions. It is in my opinion ambiguous to show a halo ring and bullseye on the same page of button choices. It also took me a long time to figure out that the confirmation delete for investments was located out of sight at the top of a scroll page. I liked being able to save and download to the computer whenever I took a break. It is very uncomfortable to have an imac clocking its wheel and becoming repeatedly unresponsive and not have access to your work.

I am not sure why anyone with a fairly straight forward tax situation - W2's and maybe some investment income ever goes to a professional preparer to have their taxes done. If they only realized that Turbo Tax provides step by step instructions - better than most pro's instructions - they could save a lot of money.

Basically excellent software. Beats the $750 I spent last year to have my return prepared last year (with errors) by an accounting firm. Some of the fonts are a bit small and for me were hard to read. But other than that, it worked great. I was particularly happy with the ease of importing 1099-B and - DIV information. The only improvement I would suggest - I would have liked more help instructions on the steps to efile. It basically went smoothly because I had last year's return handy (with our AGI and PINS). They also want driver's license info. It turns out not a big deal for us but knowing what you need up front might help some people.
