The best Alarm System for the DIYer

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I recently acquired this Simplisafe alarm system and I am very impressed. I have the "Outdoor" system consisting of the Base, Keypad, two detectors for openings, two outdoor wireless cameras, warning siren, and an activation key fob. Also included are an outdoor lawn sign, and several window stickers. Kudos to the Simplisafe people for creating the easiest and best documented setup of any electronic system I have ever seen. All the instructions are on the downloadable App, and as you move through them, you get audible and visual confirmation of each step from the base. I also liked it because you open all the boxes and keep all components right there on your desktop while you add each of them to the system. Then you use the included very sticky tape on each device to place it at the location where it will function best for you. All devices look and feel like quality stuff. The one I have is a basic system, and most people will want to purchase additional elements, depending on how many doors/windows they choose to alarm. There are quite a few add on devices, including glass breakage, water alarm, motion detectors, etc, and the prices are very reasonable. With the exception of the base, which plugs into any 110 outlet, everything else is battery operated. The base also has a backup battery, so the whole system stays up if your power goes out. The batteries are all common off-the-shelf, and available at home improvement stores. You can choose from "System off", "Home," which allows you to deactivate the motion detector and leave everything else on when you're at home, or there is "Away." So, you're wondering if the system is perfect? Almost. All battery operation is a double-edged sword, making it convenient to install and operate, but no one can accurately predict how long they'll last at your place. Time will tell. The system does have a feature that will tell you when a device needs a new one. Unlike the other components, the camera batteries are rechargable. The picture from the cameras is very good, both day and night. I haven't had the system long enough to comment on how long camera batteries will last, but a lot of activity will shorten the battery life. The camera batteries are easily removable for recharging. Another small issue is the camera mounts, which are fixed and not adjustable. For most installations they'll work OK. If you can't get the angle you want, there's a threaded mounting point on the camera so you could purchase an after-market mount, of which there are many available on Amazon. That's what I did to get the direction and elevation I needed. Simplisafe offers several 24/7 monitoring plans if you want one. When your alarm is triggered they call you before they send the cops to avoid false alarms when you accidently set it off. This happens to everyone with an alarm system, and should be thought of as a system test. LOL. Overall, this is an excellent alarm system, easy to install and use. There are a number of packages so you can choose your complete system.

Easy to set up, trickier to figure our settings

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I really liked how easy it was to set up, but I'm still trying to get my camera settings optimized. I don't get recordings of people until they are really really close to the camera... but I get recordings if the light flickers. I love that I could stick the door sensors on and make sure they work and I can later screw them in with the included hardware. They haven't loosened yet! I also haven't needed to charge the camera batteries yet, but I installed those later. I love the keyfob! I haven't accidentally pushed any buttons on it and it's so nice to just push one button to arm or disarm. The camera mounts magnetically but be careful you don't untwist the wall piece when adjusting the camera angle or pulling it off to remove and charge battery. The base unit beeps every time a door is opened, but it's not annoying. My boyfriend thought the mounting hardware for the outside cameras looked fragile but I think it's working OK. Just be mindful that it untwists easily (my camera fell in the snow when I was trying to adjust it's angle).

Effective!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This security system is wonderful. It was a breeze to set up, and I love that I don't have to pay an alarm company a monthly subscription. If you're looking for a quality, do it yourself system, seriously consider this one. It's wireless, and gives you full color vision at night. You can easily monitor your home from anywhere with your mobile device.

Got eyes outside!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I really liked how easy this system was to set up. The door sensors had a sticky side where I could just stick them on and make sure they worked before I screwed them in! The camera mounts are awesome because after you put the mounts up, the camera attaches magnetically so you can easily change positions without removing the whole thing. The picture quality is great. I love that I don't have to peek through my blinds to see who is at my front door. Overall, I am very happy with this system and how I can monitor what is going on outside of my home 24/7

Great but not excellent

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Their is a lot of pros but it does have some cons. Setup was fairly easy and the app guides you through the whole process. During the setup process though, I was trying to connect to the base station and it was struggling to connect. While the app was trying to connect to it I actually had to unplug the base and replug it back in to connect. All the other components (keypad, sensors and cameras) connected super quick. After everything was connected it did offer a few plans you could choose from but I went with the free version for now. You can do a lot in the app as far as changing settings. Notifications, timers, change the volume on how loud you want your alarm or sounds to be. I like that you can arm and disarm your system via the app or use the keypad provided. The nice thing about the sensors is when a door opens, the base makes a small sound to know a door has opened. Only thing is you don't know which door has been opened unless you have the app open and refresh the main screen by pulling down on your screen and letting go. The siren is very loud if it happens to go off. Also the system came with an extra alarm station that can be placed within 100 feet of your base station. Now for the outdoor cameras. This is where most of the cons come into play. Setup was easy and I like that the cameras stick to the base (which is screwed into the wall) via a strong magnet and the camera can easily be adjusted to get the camera at the right angle. It also makes it easy to change the battery because if you pull hard enough, it pops off the base which is mounted to the wall. I like that their is multiple options in the settings you can play around with. You can change the picture quality between 480, 780 and 1080. You can choose to have a light turn on when the camera is triggered. You can change the sensitivity and also if you want it to notify for every motion or simply when a person is detected. You can zone what areas will trigger a notification as well. Now here comes the cons. If you choose the free version of the system, it doesn't record unless you are live viewing it and click the record button. So you'll get a notification if their is movement but it doesn't record on it's own. You have to purchase a monthly plan to have anything record without doing it manually yourself when you are watching during live view. I wish their was a 24 hour option for the free version where any movement will be recorded and stay within the system for 24 hours before it goes away. Sometimes (depending on the picture quality you choose) the live feed takes forever to load. Sometimes it will even say it can't connect and to retry. Well if someone is in your yard and you don't have a plan with recording, you could potentially miss all the action and whatever triggered the camera could be gone by the time the live view pops up to watch. The better the picture quality, the longer it seems to load. I have discovered that the 780 and 1080 really don't show much of a difference in picture quality. But the 480 is where you can tell the difference as far as quality. It's still good at 480 but I'd suggest if you want a little bit of faster loading with less retrys popping up, to go with 780. Also, if you choose to talk through the camera, their is like a 3 second delay from when you say something before it plays through the camera. But I do have to say that night vision is great on these cameras (I do have a street light in the front of our house which helps slightly light up the backyard) So I can't say how well it works in near pitch black conditions. But I guess that's another bonus that these cameras have, is a light option to turn on when it's triggered. So this is mostly where my 3 stars come into play. Wish it would automatically record something on the free plan (I'd even take an hour of playback before it's deleted) but that's not an option. You can only manually record during live view. Sometimes the camera takes forever to load. And the delay of speaking through the camera. But all in all, it's still a good system with easy set up and lots of options and settings to make the best of your system. Still recommending this system and hope it answers most of the general questions people would wonder about. I wish I had more feedback on the purchased monthly plans but I haven't purchased a plan yet.

simple enough

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like the system and setup isn't too complicated at all. The plans are comparable to other systems with protection and monitoring. I like the mobility of the wireless cameras but I don't love the idea of recharging them once it's time. They need to be out of reach to avoid someone disabling, so maybe their best use is for indoors as opposed to out. Overall seems to be a good system.

Easy Set up; great video

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This was pretty straightforward to set up. If you are setting up the cameras, you need to charge the batteries before you can do anything. Setting up an account and downloading the app was seamless. Setting up the base station was no issue. Our house is pretty big but isn't "open concept" so we have 2 different wifi's in the house, and then a third outside to cover our large yard. I initially had trouble setting up the outdoor cameras because I thought they needed to be connected to the same wifi as the base station. When I tried to set them up and take them outside the house to their designated locations they would disconnect from the house wifi (hence why we have a different wifi outside). So I connected the cameras to the outside wifi and the base is connected to an inside wifi and there are no issues. If your home wifi doesn't reach where your cameras will be placed or you don't have designated wifi outside you will have issues. I was also stupidly selecting "motion" from the icons during set up when I should've gone to "cameras" in the bottom tray. I pulled the tabs out of the batteries for the cameras but now I'm wondering if I saw that when I was erroneously following set up for motion detectors. So I'm not sure if that was correct or not or whether we will have issues getting those batteries out to charge them. My husband thinks the tabs were to easily remove the batteries. So I may have messed that up. Once I figured all that out the cameras set up quickly and easily. My husband had no trouble mounting them and while the magnet that holds them in place is strong, it is also easy to place and remove the cameras. The picture is fantastic on the cameras in daylight and very good in the dark, however we have never used any sort of security or doorbell cameras prior to this so I really have nothing to compare to. I don't notice any real lag from the camera feed. Without any paid subscription service I get real time alerts on my phone when there is motion detected and can see real time from the cameras on the app. Not sure how long the batteries will last on a full charge - I may buy 2 more so there is no downtime during charging. So far, we're pleased with this system.

Easy to Install

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Straight out of the box, this system is ready to go! It was easy to configure and I appreciate the weight of the keypad - it feels sturdy. The outdoor camera runs circles around other systems I've tried. I waited a few months to review because I wanted to see how it held up during the crazy weather we get here in the south. The cameras have been through tornadic weather, freezing temps and even an ice storm.

Great features and easy install

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This security system has been great for our use. It was easy to install and we love the option of a camera. While it is not the top of the line security system it has many great features that allow us to feel more secure when we leave our house.

Great Camera

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] 7 piece outdoor security system from simply safe has distinguished itself as a considerably affordable security system to fit any budget. It's low monthly monitoring fees, option to customize, and no contracts make this system a brilliant buy. The setup and installation is very easy. The cameras are wireless with a 140゚ ultra wide view and it's 8x zoom lens has the ability to make out small details and faces from up to 15' away. They are also 2 way audio and the batteries last for up to a month on one charge. This system also has an optional 24/7 monitoring to alert police emergency or medical service. Perfect for any family.
