The worse experience I’ve ever had.

These people advertise a lower price for the DAK 16 oz ham advertised as $3.97 then they remove that price from the site then they charge my card for $26.91. Robbery without a gun. Then they don’t answer the phone . Selling this out of Miami. Answering machine picks up speaking like a thug.

Terrible product NOT premium at all

See my photo of this mess, and compare it to the photo on the label of the product can. As other reviewers have mentioned, this is nothing but chunks of fat pressed together with chunks of light and dark meat. Has a grey, off-color appearance. VERY salty, does not hold up well when heated; turns to mush. I'm especially befuddled because I lived in Europe for five years and I am used to high standards in European foods. I was expecting something similar to the Dubuque canned ham my mother used to purchase when I was a child. Instead, I received something which tastes and cooks worse than SPAM. I bought this over the internet and had it shipped to my home because Walmart is so far away. It appears there is no mechanism for me to report this as an inferior product and get my money back or a credit issued.

The Question Is ....

...... Having not had this little " ham" in a great while, I decided to try it again.... Well, adding it to eggs, boxed scalloped potatoes, frying it up for a sandwich, yeah it is handy to have about. It seemed to have more " ham flavor " this time around , hmmm, an improvement since our last encounter, I wonder .... ?

This is NOT canned ham...

Canned ham used to be just that... chunks of ham. This is not that, it's a prepared meat product with small... very small... chunks of ham in it. Chunks the size of a pea. Otherwise, it's Spam. Now I like Spam, and if you like Spam you'll like this. But it's not ham... definitely not PREMIUM HAM as it says on the can. It used to be but it's not anymore.

Not a great emergency food item.

Very salty. It was tasty and you could absolutely tell it was made from real ham it just had an unacceptable sodium content. You could use this if you were going to make beans or something that would absorb a lot of the sodium. In a hurricane or a survival situation this product would make you utilize a great portion of your available water. That being said the container was durable and very packable.

Unpleasant experience.

I will eat Vienna sausages but this was disgusting. There were huge blobs of fat mixed in with processed slim and something that flaked like tuna. I tried heating it up but that only gave the fat blobs the consistency of a warm marshmallow. I am truly repulsed even thinking about this product again. I wish I would have taken the time to read the reviews and saved myself this disgusting experience. The picture on that can is nothing compared to what is inside.

Not Exactly Ham

This is not the ham you know and love. but then again, maybe it's not supposed to. It looks like, tastes like, and has a texture very much like Spam. It has a long shelf life, which is why I purchased a couple of dozen cans--for dire emergency situations in which the food supply is disrupted. I bought it just in case, and other than opening a can to sample, the rest is stored away in my dry basement. It's not a bad product, and it probably is technically ham, but you probably won't want it for your daily breakfast. I'm giving it four starts becasue its perfect for what it actually is. Just not excactly ham.

Situatuinal

I dice it up, fry it off and use it in place of bacon fir flavoring beans, greens and such. It works well for this. I tried it for sandwiches once and wasn't impressed. I definitely don't consider it palatable unless you slice it and cook it off first.

First impressions meet expectations

To start off this meat is what you would expect from meat in a can. It is very salty, which is ok when paired with other foods. I used 2 cans to feed 5 people for 1 meal as a side to tortillas and eggs. Everyone said that it tasted "alright" but no one would say it was better than fresh. We will probably have it again but with rice and gravy.

Recipe for great flavor

I found a recipe online for canned ham. It said it guaranteed to make the canned ham taste like a high end ham. I used a beer to cook the salt out of the ham, then pour it out. Then add brown sugar, pineapple juice and sliced pibeapple along with whole clove. Very true, tasted like a christmas glazed ham! Just search for “make a cheap ham taste amazing” by nerdymama to get all the temperatures and details etc. I did shorten a few of the times as the Dak ham is one pound. I Plan to use the same recipe to cook a canned Hormel Ham too, the Hormel is 4 lbs but has to be refrigerated...
