Customer reviews for Westinghouse iGen2800 2800 Watt Recoil Start Inverter Generator forMember photos
Run great, quiet, and appears to be well made
The iGen 2500 started right up. It was surprisingly easy and smooth to pull the cord. I did a one hour test run with a full size side by side refrigerator, one lamp, one box fan, a charging iPad, and a Mac all at the same time. I never saw it resister above 25% or so and all went well. Ran nice and quiet. In some cases the refrigerator could create a major but very brief surge in watts (maybe 1,800 at the most) that might require powering up and stabilizing it before connecting the rest. I don't think it would be a problem once the refrigerator is cooled down. This is what we ran with a borrowed generator during Irma and it helped a lot, no lost food and reasonable comfort sleeping. The only problem is the fuel gauge does not work but I fully expect Westinghouse to make that right. I also plan to use it for some camping.
Major issues with my iGen2500
I bought this unit in November 2019, but didn't immediately use it. I just went to use it yesterday (September 2020) for a PG&E PSPS and found out that the fuel cap doesn't fit??? I thought that it was odd that it didn't come attached to the unit, and now I know why. They must have known that there was a defect to begin with (likely with the fuel tank) but still shipped out the unit! The threads on the fuel tank are very rounded, whereas the threads on the fuel cap are very sharp and defined. I needed to use the generator to keep the refrigerator running, so I just set the cap on top so that nothing could get into the tank while the unit is running. During use, I also found out that the Power Output gauge does not work. So far, I'm extremely unhappy with the quality of this unit. I filed a case and will see how Westinghouse customer service handles this issue.
Excellent Portable Power Inverter
I recently got a chance to use my new Westinghouse iGen 2500 Power Inverter when there was a planned power outage at my house for 14 hours. The unit was super simple to setup. I removed the two screws on the side panel, put the oil that came in a pre measured plastic bottle (.37 qt), filled the 1 gallon tank with 87 octane gasoline and fired the unit up. The unit ran the entire time and mainly powered my internet equipment, a fan and a small refrigerator. I hooked it up to a small extension cord and put it on my patio. Very quite for a small 4 stroke engine. Great product
Small and Powerful
After weeks of searching for a compatible generator that would work to power my trailers air conditioning system yet still light enough for the wife to carry, I came across this 2500. I was shocked to see that even though it was a 2500 that it's running watts was still at 2200. Most other gens would be around the 17-1800 running watts. This provides more than enough power to keep my family cool while dry camping. I know that fuel time wont be as long as a larger gen but as long as I keep filling the tank this gen will keep on running. The only downside was that my gen was missing a fuel filter. After a quick chat with Westinghouse we got a case created and I am now waiting on a new filter.
Great price, perfect size
We moved from a whole house generator to a new subdivision. Always had the security of power in case of an emergency. For the new house I needed just enough to run the refrigerator, TV, some lights and the computer in case of power out. After some research this unit looked like the best for me. The hundreds of satisfied reviews outweighed the few complaints about some damage in shipping. I got the unit delivered, with no damage, absolutely perfect packaging. Like most other reviews, I followed the direction for start up and it fired on the first pull. Amazing how quiet it runs and at 48 pounds its easy to store away and bring right out in case we need it. I'm also impressed with the parallel operation option, in case we need that in the future. Very satisfied with the purchase.
Powerful little generator, quality control issues
After much research into which suitcase size generator had the best options, performance, decibel level, and price point I came to the conclusion that the Westinghouse iGen2500 fit that bill. This model is the same size as most 2000 surge/1700 run size generators, but this one performs at 2500 surge/2200 run capability. It also has some handy digital monitoring that most small generators don't. My concern was that a number of reviewers on various sites reported receiving damaged units from the factory, specifically broken spark plugs and spark plug caps. I reside in Canada and would have ordered from a Canadian supplier to simplify the return process (in case this was needed), however the only Canadian retailers for this generator, Home Depot Canada and Amazon.ca, had no stock and had no known restock date. So, hoping I would not need to submit a return I ordered one from Home Depot USA who had the best U.S price I could find, but required a trip to the U.S to pick up as they will not ship to Canada. To my dismay the unit I received was damaged. The spark plug was cracked, and the engine shut-off switch (behind the front panel) was broken. The spark plug was no big deal, but the kill-switch repair would have involved major disassembly, so it had to be returned, which meant a return trip to the border, as Home Depot would only cover return shipping within the U.S. and UPS could not figure out how to charge me just the difference. Home Depot handled the return very quickly. By the time all this took place, I discovered stock of this item was available in Canada thru Amazon.ca again so I was able to re-order the item within Canada. The second unit arrived with some serious crud/sediment in the gas tank, and what looked like small rust spots and staining on the inner gas tank walls that required numerous flushes to clear, but no physical damage was evident. I decided to take a chance that the crud appeared since the factory run-up and hope a good rinsing will prevent any further issues. It appears to have a small inline fuel filter that should catch any remaining sediment, and can be replaced if required. After careful break-in it seems to be operating as well as I'd hoped, and is able to run numerous tools and produce the expected 2500/2200 watts. The digital monitoring is very nice, cycling thru the various information modes and keeping me notified of all the important data regarding its operation. A friend who works in construction and uses numerous of the expensive "H" variety generators confirms this unit is as quiet as their red units, which is supposedly where the bar has been set. So despite the initial quality control issues, I will give it a 4 star rating for now, hoping the initial purchase experiences don't reflect the longevity I hope to get out of this generator, to be used as my supplemental RV power supply. Here's hoping Westinghouse reads this and corrects the problems coming out of the factory so others can enjoy their fine product without the hassles of returns and having to deal with these sorts of issues in a brand new unit.
Hi Ciscoz, We appreciate the time you took to leave such a detailed review of your experience! We're very sorry to hear about the incident with the shipping troubles between Canada and the U.S. and apologize about any inconveniences it may have caused you. We understand it may have been frustrating, but we're happy to hear that you were able to get it resolved properly. It is very normal to see sediment in the fuel tank as that is a byproduct of the assembling process. It sounds like you were able to properly flush it out and get it started without a hitch. After all is said and done, we're very glad that you are enjoying your new iGen2500. Thank you for bringing this to our attention as we will definitely keep it in mind for any future improvements we may implement in the future. Once again, thank you for selecting Westinghouse as your top choice for portable power! Have a great day!
Great features
Set up was a breeze. It came with oil, a funnel and tools. Instructions are clear. I tested it right away. I ran my French door refrigerator, vacuum cleaner and a couple of fans, all without problems. With 1.2 litters of gasoline ran over 3 hours. Capacity is one gallon (10 hrs). Digital displace is a great feature.
Quiet Powerhouse
I just unboxed, set up, and operated the unit for the first time. Initial reaction is quite positive. Unit started on first pull and ran quietly compared to traditional generators, especially when I placed the unit into efficiency mode. I bought the unit for camping and quiet operation is essential.
Excellent generator for the money
Purchased on 08/07/2021 and very satisfied with the product. Easy to follow instructions to get the generator ready for use. Runs quiet and easy to maneuver to different locations. One pull start-up. One recommendation I would make is to place the serial number on my model, iGen2500, in an easier to read location. Otherwise very satisfied.
Nice Generator for the Price
I bought this as an emergency generator and to allow me to use some of my power tools where I don't have access to power. The starting instructions were easy to follow and the generator started on the first pull. I haven't had a chance to use it much, but did load it up with a couple of items and confirmed it would start my saw and drill. When starting a motor it hesitates for an instance then picks right up and had no trouble starting the devices. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is the noise. I don't have a noise meter so I can't measure the dBA, but while not excessively noisy, it was slightly noisier than I expected. While the generator was not advertised to have a fuel shut off, I was hoping the stop position was a fuel shutoff, but based on how fast it stops it either completely cuts of the air supply or the spark. For something that is only used occasionally, having a fuel shutoff that allows you to run the carburetor out of fuel is a nice feature that prevents gas gum up in the fuel system..
