Great Value and Performance

I bought this after returning another brand with 4K Ultra that cost 3 x as much and was full of bugs. It did not update firmware, the streaming apps did not work right, and the normal DVDs displayed in Pillar Box Format (Black Vertical Bars on the side), and there was no way to avoid this. This BDP-S1700 was plug and play. It worked out of the box with no setup other than the quick setup. It plays Blu-Rays as well as DVDs (480P), with no pillar bars. It also upscales normal DVDs to 1080P. Picture quality is excellent, sound quality through a Denon Home Theater amp is excellent. Overall, I'm quite satisfied and impressed.,. The price performance ratio is outstanding. The only caveat is I just bought it and will it last?

wonder about reliability

I just bought this and it seems to work fine. All I wanted it for was to play video disks. Sony seemed to be a bit fussy about the location of the plug-in power module because of excessive heat. Also the unit vibrates quite a bit, enough so that it is audible. Don't know if this is normal, time will tell.

Another nice Sony hardware product.

The player comes with many useful features, such as a Netflix button on the remote, a network connector, which I prefer to wireless and more internet selections than I could probably watch during my lifetime. It is very easy to use and I like the USB port up front. This player will play just about any motion picture format that I can throw at it, though most of my files are of the mp4, m4v and mkv variety. Overall, a very nice player.

Great features - and pricing was perfect!

For the price, I expected a bare-minimum player...you know....pop in a DVD or a Blu-Ray disk and that would be it. But were we ever surprised! Our old player was so old that we didn't even know about Hulu, YouTube, Pandora, etc - as features on a player. Easy to set up, worked right out of the box, and one of the easiest players we've ever owned. I would buy this player again for any of our other tv's if needed. Control is also easy to work with. Fits great right in your hand and easy to figure out without having to read a manual.

BDPS1700 bluray player simple fast, no manual set

i was hoping it would sync to my View HD HDMI to YPbPr converter to feed my older Toshiba projector which seems to like 1280 by 720 60 hz setting but it does not work with it saying its out of range and there is no manual output setting to make it work for that.

Took a while to figure out

I bought this yesterday but had to go back to the store and get a cable to hook it to my new television. I had a problem figuring out how to get the new Roku television to switch over to the DVD player without any instructions but I finally did it. The worst problem I had by far was the half hour or more it took me to register the DVD player doing it over and over and over and over! Someone must have hacked the Sony home page.

Plays Region A/1 Blu-Rays without any issues.

Bought it to replace 2008 SONY blu-ray player that would not play many new title releases. This one does without any issues. Unit seems too small, lightweight. Remote too small, too flimsy. This unit does not have LED display which I was used to…but I guess many new players don't.

Why two different serial numbers? How about making

Why two different serial numbers? How about making it simple to identify it and why having one number on the box that is different from the one on the unit? This sounds terribly intentional. Without the same serial number though it is unadvisable to purchase extra warranty.

Very good basic bluray player

This is a very good basic bluray player, has excellent video and was easy to set up. It lacks the connections for home theater, it is very small (about 1/4 the size of my older Sony bluray player), does not have a front panel display and has a plug-in AC adapter instead of the permanently-connected power cord. Overall, for the price, it is a very good bluray player.

Easy to use. Good picture quality.

I bought this to replace an old VCR/DVD player. It's easy to use, but for some reason I cannot play just my TV when the DVD player is hooked up. The TV won't change channels or even turn off when it's hooked up. I just unplug the cables from the back of the player until I want to play a DVD. It's also extremely lightweight, so I had to put a rubber mat under it to keep it from sliding when I put a DVD in or take one out.
