Sony makes very good DVD players

This is my 2nd Sony Blu Ray player in the last 8 years or so and I am a loyal customer. This time around I needed to upgrade and so of course I chose Sony. The set up was easy. The remote is easy to use. I purchased an ethernet cable for the 1st time so I could connect to the internet. DVD's play just fine. Easy to operate and navigate. My main complaint is the lack of premier apps that are featured. No Disney Plus, ESPN Plus, Apple TV. These are the heavyweight apps customers look forward to. I wish Sony was more transparent which apps are featured in their devices before a customer purchases.

A few quirks

Gives a good picture and would have given a better rating except for a couple of cons. 1) The video and audio lose sync and I have to shut down the TV and the player to correct the problem. This occurs approx every 2 hours. 2) There are no useful directions on how to set up the remote for the favorite button and for the TV control buttons.

This little box is AWESOME!

Just wanted my first Blu-Ray player and got far more capability with this unit. Streaming, DVD's, MP3 audio and more! And nice compact size! Thanks Sony, you got it right on this unit! Even lets me control the volume of my TV - some engineer really did his homework!

Excellent Blu-Ray Player with Extra Features

While the unit has only been recently installed, I am greatly impressed with its features and performance. I'm getting the impression that this particular model may soon be superceded by a newer model, but the basic design is nonetheless quite commendable. Though I have only two Blu-Ray discs at present, video performance far exceeds DVD video due to the inherent superiority of the Blu-Ray disc over that older standard. Installation was quite simple, and it integrates well with both my Sony KDL-40W600B Bravia television as well as my Harmony 650 Remote. This unit distinguishes itself over most other players with the built in web interface, which provides the "Smart TV" features of the Sony TV. It may well be that the video quality of Netflix and other applications is a bit sharper from the BDPS1700 through its HDMI connection than from the Smart TV interface of the Sony TV itself. I am still learning some of the features of this player, but so far I am very impressed, and would recommend this or any other similar Sony Blu-Ray player without hesitation.

Awesome Inexpensive Easy to use BluRay

Coming out a broken relationship and starting over isnt easy to do, but with the cost effective device this Blu-ray player kept me occupied many of times when i couldn't do anything but cry. Point being easy to use, cause with tears streaming down your face who has time to adjust your vision thats full blown blurry due to water filled eyes.

Overheating problems

The player periodically loses responsiveness to the remote control, making it inoperable, until we unplug it for several hours. We've only used it about 5 times and it's jappened twice. We will be taking it back to the point of purchase for exchange and hope the next unit performs better.

Surprisingly small

Purchased this to replace a blu-ray player that was 6 years old. Surprised how small this thing is. Great picture. Initial setup was not easy; there's no way to skip setting up a network even though I don't want to use one. Note say to program and I've been working with computers for decades. Disappointed there's no analog audio output on the unit and that there's no display on it either. I know it's small but come on now!

Nice and simple to use

This is my first Blue-ray player. It works extremely well as a player. Unfortunately can't use the network features because I don't have a modem. My neighbor lets me use his wireless for access. Otherwise I'm impressed with the small footprint and the quality of the picture and sound.

Good but has sound issues

Works well once correct settings are in place. It has a sound setting that requires a PCM selection rather than "Auto" for our TV using an HDMI cable, which you would not expect it to matter. What's the purpose of "auto" if it doesn't auto-select? Anyway, all is good now.

Works well, price is excellent!

We bought this Blu-Ray player to replace our aged Sony DVD player, which is 10 years old! The Blu-Ray was easy to set up and performs nicely. One Item I noticed early on when we played a Blu-Ray disc, the shadow areas in the picture went totally black, with no detail or texture to them at all. I don't know why, or how, this happens with the new player but I will probably contact Sony. The unit seems to work fine with DVDs, so it's probably a setting or maybe it involves our Sony video screen, which is also getting old.
