Good DVD player - Terrible remote control

I was impressed by the video quality of this DVD player. But I was seriously unimpressed by the remote control. Instead of including buttons for such features as repeat and zoom, you have to navigate through a frustrating menu system to access those features. It's as if one group of people designed the player itself (which works well) and another group of people purposely decided to make the player as inconvenient as possible to use (by designing a terrible remote control and menu system). Other frustrating features of this DVD player include fast motion, slow motion and advance buttons that work in unintuitive ways and a counter that appears so momentarily that it's nearly impossible to read (There's another counter that will remain on indefinitely, but it is part of the menu system, and the menu blocks the video in the background). This unit also has a tiny power-on LED that is nearly invisible from across a large room. On the positive side, the remote control allows you to see screen shots of multiple titles and chapters simultaneously and it has extremely smooth and sharp slow motion (but it doesn't have frame by frame slow motion). If I had it to do over again, I probably would have spent more time researching the features and remote controls of other models, and probably would have bought one of those other models instead of this one.

Pretty good little unit!

I've had this player for a couple of years now and I have only one real complaint. This complaint may sound trivial but if you are like me and enjoy taking a look at details in films by using freeze frame and frame by frame then this design flaw (IMHO) will annoy you too. I've never had a video player (even my first VHS in the 80's) that you couldn't hold down the forward or reverse frame by frame button and and watch the frames tick by. Well... on this 21st century DVD, you have to manually push the buttons 20, 30, 40 times to find the frame you're looking for! RIDICULOUS!!! Otherwise.... this is a great little unit!!

Good for about 1 year

This unit failed after just over one year of use. It will no longer load a DVD, even brand new ones. I called Sony support and after trying many fixes it did work on one new DVD but took about 8 min. to load it. After the call, it would once again not load any DVDs. I could not buy an extended warranty from Walmart because the item cost less than $50.

Sony DVD Player

If the instructions to set it up had gone a step further, we'd have had no problem, but they don't say anything about what to do once the player is hooked up; that's the only reason I didn't give this a complete 5 star rating. After you hook it up according to the picture instructions that come with the player, you have to then go to your TV's Remote and press "Input" and then make sure you've highlighted HDMI2. Possibly on your TV it might be another line, but you just have to try each one, then hit Play on the DVD's Remote. A neighbor had to point out those facts, which he learned when hooking up his DVD player. Even when you Google asking how to set up a DVD player, they don't go that one step further. A royal pain in the butt...otherwise, this is a GREAT DVD player and at a great price.

Inexpensive but lasts only a short time

I have had 2 units of this model DVD player. When it works, it is easy to use and does a great job. The 1st unit only lasted about 6 months. Because it was so inexpensive I got another one. The unit I currently have does not work properly anymore (after about 8 months). Right now the remote only works after the DVD is playing. Getting the player to turn on and actually play takes several minutes of manual on-off and pushing play and pushing eject several times. I use it infrequently, but the warranty is only 90 days. I am thinking of getting another throw-away unit because of the cheap price. I hate electronics in our landfills, but I really think this is how products are now designed.

Solid DVD player with great picture & sound

I bought this as an upgrade to my existing DVD player which died. It enhances existing DVDs up to 1080p HD. It also has a HDMI jack which improves the clarity and sound of the player. I was getting interference from the old 3 jack rca connectors. I am very happy with my purchase. And for $39.99, the price cannot be beat.

Not what I expected

Looking at the way this product was presented on line, it looked like this dvd player would play HD movies, i.e. blu ray. I put a hd movie(blue ray) in the dvd player and it would not play. I looked at the box the sony dvd player came in and it stated it would "upscale" regular dvd movies to HD, which was not what I was looking for.

Stopped working after 18 months

I purchased this in September of 2022 as I was going to start watching more DVD's, as of recently however I've had several DVD's that freeze up in the middle of the episodes, I noticed it on some when I first purchased it, but now its doing it all the time, hopefully with the protection I bought when I bought this, they can replace mine quickly

Good DVD player

I only purchased this DVD player to watch red box movies and select DVD's i already have. Our family uses the apple TV to stream other movies most often. The DVD player was a decent price - wish it was cheaper than 40 dollars considering most people have blu ray players and other streaming devices to watch movies and etc. regular DVD players are obsolete and should cost less than 30 dollars. I needed it so I bought it to do my T-25 workouts.
