We had it in the pantry next to the open trashcan at first, but it was too much scent. We then put it in a covered trashcan and it was better. The scent was contained to the trashcan but still really strong when opened. We may have accidentally punctured it when putting the unit together. It said to slide the scent pod into the holder and then we gave it a light press to see if there was a smell. I can say it definitely covers up odors.

The only thing is I think the Lavender is a bit strong at first but after couple week the sent fade a way and i think it is better. Not too strong and still keep the odor away. The smell was prominent at first, as most are. First day or 2 it was more noticeable but then either we got used to it or it died down a bit to a perfect tone. The lavender was great and didn't blend poorly with other household smells. It does stick VERY strongly which I don't mind, but make sure where you put it, is where you want it! May range on different surfaces.
