The reason I wrote this review is that I wish I had known this particular issue prior to using the machine initially: our hard water jammed the machine. The first week we had the ice maker, it kept “defrosting” constantly. I followed the instructions for cleaning out the machine by using vinegar water, running the cleaning cycle, then sticking a towel in the machine for 24 hours. It cleaned everything out, however my guess that the jamming was due to our hard water was correct. We used distilled water and have had zero problems in the several months since. As a matter of fact, the machine has not “defrosted” a single time since switching to distilled water. The ice separates easily as well (with our hard water, the ice cubes would stick together). Lastly, I highly recommend getting the machine with the side water tank. Filling up the side tank is so much easier to accomplish rather than pulling up on the front slot, pulling out the tub, filling the reservoir inside the machine up to the line, then putting the tub in (there’s a special way to do it so it won’t just fall out when you open the machine to take out ice). The side tank just needs to be pulled off, flipped around, remove the lid, fill to the top, replace lid, and put back on. This only needs to be done twice a week, and can be monitored since it’s clear and the water line is visible. The machine’s reservoir is hidden underneath the tub of ice, so I would need to wait until “add water” lights up on the machine. The side tank is much larger than the internal reservoir, so it doesn’t need to be filled near as often which I like.

Every time I had more than two people in the house, I found myself asking someone to bring ice. Finally, I decided to get this ice machine. Though I plan to have electricity added in my pantry this summer so I don't have to have the machine on the kitchen counter, for now we are using it on the counter. We love the ease of maintaining is and we love the ice.

Ok, pricey, but yet SO WORTH IT!! The machine is running everyday in our house of 5 (2 adults 3 kids). It’s been such a relief to have extra ice (the best type too) along with the fridge ice that just can’t keep up. Easy to clean. Easy to install. Wonderful product!!

Love the ice maker, love the soft crunchy opal ice! A few things I would do differently is make an option for the drip tray to have a mat that fits that for water drops, inside the ice box to make that box bigger to make sure the water at the bottom is not noticeable, and try to see if you can make it quieter.. Other than those things it's been great!

This ice maker is a great appliance however, the cleaning and descaling process needs to be scaled back. That is a workout in itself. I use bottled purified water and it asked to descale once after ONE week of use! I had to buy a lot of vinegar, too. And, linking to the app was easy. I can turn the ice maker on/off from my bedroom or schedule the ice making time.

We love SONIC ICE and moved to the land of no Sonic's 9 years ago. The OPAL is a dream come true. It produces the best ice and we are truly happy with it. We were nervous when we installed it because we could see water seeping into the ice catcher, but researched and found out that was normal. Also, on the day of installation it produced ice very slowly. Then it started getting faster and faster over time. We love it.

Made a full bin of fresh crunchy ice right out of the box. The Manuel was easy to follow and we had crunchy ice within 30 minutes out of the box. One of the absolute best purchases I have made recently. Well made and easy to follow directions. Thanx GE

Do not buy…this lasted a little over a year. Great while it worked but with this price tag so not worth it for a year. It also gets hot have to keep a small fan plugged in to keep it from getting hot and now completely stopped making ice. Also pain to clean and still didn’t help motor sounds shot and making noise. Thank goodness I bought extended warranty!

Love the ice maker when it works. I received my first ice maker as a gift December of 2022. About a month after using it, it decided to stop working. They replaced it with a new one, but took over a month to get it. Has been working great for this past year until recently it decided to stop making ice. I have cleaned it following the recommendations in the manual. It still does not make ice. For the price paid I was hoping it would last longer than one year. Not sure if I would recommend.

This is by far one of the best purchases I have made in a long time. I didn’t realize just how popular and yummy this ice is!! I only wish I would have purchased a long time ago! It makes ice so quickly and is very quiet. The app is an extra fun touch!
