Not Gone Lie

This my second Opal. The first one worked reliably every day for about 4 1/2 years. Then the ice bin indicator started indicating full bin right after it was turned on and refused to produce any ice. I went back and forth with tech support and tried every possible way to clean the machine and the sensors but to no avail. I'm sure if the ice bin sensors could be cleaned it would continue to produce ice. But rather than waste any more time on it, I went ahead and got a new ice maker. So amortize the cost of the machine over daily usage for 4 1/2 years. Not sure what the per day operating cost is after figuring in water and electricity. But it was worth it. LOVE. THIS. ICE!!!

Wonderful Ice

Produces that Sonic Ice that everyone loves. Everyone in the house is hooked on it now. Friendly warning - make sure you filter your water. If you don't use a filter or take the proper steps cleaning the unit then you'll have trouble down the road and your unit will not work properly. No instructions on how to connect the unit to WiFi. Had to call Opal for assistance.

Works well

The first one I purchased did not work and only stayed in the cleaning cycle. Went back and exchanged for a new one and worked right away. Extremely easy to operate and makes ice quickly. One of the higher prices options out there but looks sleek and looks nice and sleek on the counter.

Love the ice, makes funny noises.

This is our 2nd GE ice maker. Our first one gave out after about 1 year and a half. It made noise and then there was a leak, and then it stopped making ice all together. We have had this one for about 6 months and it makes squealing noises when it is defrosting. Which is kind of annoying but the ice is delicious so we deal with the weird noise.

Exactly the Ice Machine I Needed

This machine looks great, and everyone compliments the ice it makes for their drinks. But more importantly, it actually has a great way to clean the machine. It's a little confusing the first time, but after that it's simple. Our old machine had no "practical" way to be cleaned that's why it broke within 2 years, and is now replaced lol. If you're looking for a machine to do parties of 15+ people, you're going to want a built in heavy duty ice maker, not this.

Follow the instructions =exactly=!

Got the ice maker, did some extra sterilizing and cleaning cycles because, HER. Moved it to its permanent location and plugged it in. Ran all night making ice, but didn't seem to be making a lot and we were getting the "Add Water" light when the tank was about half-full. We started trying to troubleshoot when SHE double-checked the instructions and said to check the tank hose and to be sure that it's flat on the counter. I did and, low and behold, dummy me plugged the power in before connecting the tank hose and I ran the hose =over= the bundled power cord behind the machine. Once I re-routed the hose so it was flat on the counter, it started working property and has continued to do so the past almost 3 weeks. Yes, there are other ice makers that are a lot cheaper, but I don't think any of them can touch this one. =She's= happy, so that's all that really matters!

Worked for 2 days

Loved this ice maker for two days, then it started making a loud squeaking noise. Went to the owners manual troubleshooting .... it says "may start to squeak as ice starts to build up around the mechanisms. The defost cycle is automatic, and may take 30-45 minutes.During this time, the front button won't respond. More frequent squeaking usually requires white vinegar cleaning to remove internal mineral scale buildup". Turned off machine overnight ran cleaning cycle with white vinegar (note - machine did not make "squeaking" sound during cleaning cycle.) with cleaning cycle completed drained the white vinegar solution and ran another cleaning cycle with clean water. Once the ice maker started making ice the Squeaking started up again.

Finally Took the Leap

I have coveted this ice maker for some time. I LOVE chewable ice but I was hesitant to spend so much money on myself. Well, I'm worth it! Set up was quick and cleaning isn't difficult or time consuming. There are 2 things that I wish were in the instruction manual. 1) there is no mention of the optional filter. I buy them from Amazon. I've used both the GE brand and the Glacier Bay brand. They seem to both last about 2 months. 2) I battled to set up the WiFi. I foolishly guessed I should use the Opal app but I eventually learned from reading a blog about something else that the Opal app is only for blue tooth. The correct app is called SmartHQ. The app is helpful as you can set a schedule and it tells you when the ice maker needs cleaning. I set mine up in my laundry room near the sink for ease of draining during cleaning, but you could easily use a bucket of it weren't near a sink. It is a bit heavy to move. One thing I'm not clear on is the light, nothing in the manual describes the purpose for the light (off/dim/on) but I've read the blue light helps keep it clean. I have no idea if this is true or not??? As for noise, it really isn't noisy. It makes some noise when making ice but I can't hear it from the kitchen which is the room next door. Long story short, I love it.

Great at making ice but….

So, this machine worked great first few days then one day it was running for a good hour and it started making noise that steadily got louder and louder. Believe it was stuck trying churn out ice not quite sure. Definitely not a good noise. Tried turning off power but that did nothing. Finally, had to unplug it. Waited a few hours and turned it on again. Took about an hour and started making the same noise again. So, long story short, called GE and returned it. They are sending me a new one. Hopefully the last one was a lemon b/c it made ice fairly quickly.

"Sonic" ice available at home

My freezer ice maker went out, so I finally had the excuse to buy this ice maker. Though it is a bit expensive, I had it set up, cleaned, and producing ice in less than an hour. If you keep it on, it keeps ice pretty well, and if you turn it off, you will have about a glass full of ice in 20 minutes. It isn't loud, and sits nicely on my counter. If you chew ice - this is a must have for your kitchen.
