Worth Paying Extra For

We originally bought a much cheaper Frigidaire nugget ice maker. It was horrible. SO loud, and within about a month it up and died. Decided to shell out the extra money for this GE machine, one we had limited experience with before, and it was the right call! Operates much quieter, is very efficient, and we’ve had and used it heavily for almost five months without any issue. Setup was difficult, however. For some reason we couldn’t just connect the tubes and start making ice. The pump needed to be primed, and there are no useful instructions on how to do that. Found a YouTube video that didn’t help but at least gave some pointers, and figured it out from there. Added several extra hours to setup time though!

#1 ice maker

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Makes large amount of ice, quickly. Easy to set up/use. Not loud at all. Looks great on counter in kitchen. Wonderful nugget ice! Getting a 15% discount with Consumer Reports was the topper for me.

Don't use filter can't use after1st true cleaning

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I would have love to know that when it tells you to do a cleaning for the first time that you can't put the filter back in because the machine doesn't recognize it. It try's to make ice and then it stops and tells you to add more water and you have a side tank and it is totally full and the inside the water has gone down due to the fact that it tried to make ice, so you add a little more water into the machine and it try to make ice and then stops and tells you to add more water and it is all due to the filter, I took it out and I have not had any problems making ice sense. I only use Filtered water, so we decide not to use the filter anymore. There is no true instructions for this machine. No clear trouble shooting help in the book and everything I found on the internet was not that much helpful either to figure this out. When ice melts it makes a lot of water in the bottom of the bin and doesn't drain out very well, all I have seen water in between the walls of the bin after its been washed and it seam like when I wipe down the front part under were the bin is it seams that the water keeps popping back up, so I'm not sure if water could be leaking down into the front of the machine from that area when it gets wet from the bin hanging down when you get the ice out because of all the melted ice that turned into water. Don't use the filter is a problem and the machine doesn't recognize it after you do the first true cleaning and put it back into the machine, so it is worthy.

We'd like to help out with the filter and go over the water you are noticing at the bottom of your Opal. It can be normal to notice water at the bottom of the bin, it is melted ice from what wasn't used. We recommend checking out page 7 in the manual below for assistance with draining your unit. https://products-salsify.geappliances.com/image/upload/s--hPt8j2G2--/a656dd8264a1786411b2865c10956f3e46f3598f.pdf For the filter, whenever it is removed and eventually replaced it does need to be reset so that the Opal can detect it. There is a filter button that needs to be held down to reset the tracker. You can view more information on page 11 in the same manual as above.

Well worth the money

My wife and I were a little thrown off by the price but decided to purchase it for Mother’s Day. I never realize we used so much ice. It takes about 20 mins to get started but once it gets going, it’s non stop. The ice is perfect for drinks, coffee, water or just to snack on. My kids will finally drink water (with ice), just to be able to crunch on the ice after they are done drinking it. My wife absolutely loves it and I would recommend to any buyer out there. I know it’s a lot of money, but it’s well worth it.

Loud and Annoying

We are now on our second one of these. The first one started making this loud clunking and then slamming noise. GE sent us a second one and this new one now makes a high pitch noise (it sounds like the emergency broadcast system noise) any time the pump turns on. For what you pay for these things are not very good quality.

Waste of money

We purchased the GE 2.0 ice maker 2 years ago. The last 6 months it has had all kinds of issues. It produces very little ice, 20 cubes or less an hour, and constantly says defrosting or cleaning. We have cleaned and maintained it as recommended but this has been a huge waste of money.

A good way to save your fridge/ from breaking!

Purchased this for my wife for Xmas, she’s obsessed with crushed ice but it’s hard on our fridge/freezer (it jams up and burns up the motor). We have the Opal nonstop since purchasing it! No issues so far, makes ice very fast and it perfect. I’d highly recommend.

Never worked

This never worked. While trying to set it up and use the cleaning cycle I got the dreaded “add water” message. Look this up. It is a well known thing for this machine. I tried different amounts of water, different locations to make sure the machine was level, etc. No luck. It never made a single cube. Listen to other reviewers when they say this thing is a waste of money!

This ice machine is the BMW of in home ice makers. Fast and efficient and oh so quiet. When this one gives out we will be getting another one just like this one. I only have one small complaint. The on/off button isn’t easily visible. Maybe do a braille sign over where you can turn it on and or off. Great machine otherwise.

Best Machine Ever

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is the best purchase our office could have made! We did a ton of research on ice machines, and this was the most recommended on the market; Reddit was right! The ice is so crunchy, it is such a quiet machine (literally never makes a sound), it took only a few minutes to install after cleaning, and it makes SO much ice! I feel like we haven't run out once since purchasing. It fits perfectly on the counter, and the side tank attachment doesn't add much to it (size wise). The price is worth it--you'll probably never have to replace an ice machine again!
