High hopes for Opal. She let me down :(

Within 6 hours of adding water the machine began to make a loud whining noise right before going into defrost. Loud as in you could hear it from every room in the house. Within two days the machine quit altogether. It was returned. I kept my money.

Love my ice nugget machine!

I've been wanting one of these for quite some time. When saw it was on sale I thought it was time to purchase! Glad I did! Easy to set up, had ice in no time and absolutely love it!! Great price too.

Opal Nugget Ice maker is perfect

We are loving the Opal Nugget Ice maker including our dog. It is so nice to have ice anytime you want without go to the store to buy bags of ice. It sits perfectly on our counter.

Stopped working after 2 months

The product was great for the first two months and then stopped working. Couldn't get GE to fix it or send another one out. Very disappointed in the service.

A member of our team will be reaching out to you via email for more information. Please respond back at your earliest convenience. In the meantime, We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles. Usingvinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. It is recommended that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit.

Just as good as sonic ice!

This makes the best ice and makes it faster than I was anticipating! Setup was simple enough. The tank is helpful because I think I would be adding water frequently without it. Best purchase I've made in a while!

Worst experience and not worth the money

We bought our first ice machine and it worked for half a day. It started making horrible noises so we unplugged it. The next day we plugged it back in and it worked great for another few hours. It started making horrible noises again so we returned it. We decided to get the same machine, giving it the benefit of the doubt. Horrible noises again played the same game finally took it back and will never buy another one again!

Do not recommend

We have had this machine for a year and it is more of a hassle than it is worth. The ice is great, but the frequency of the loud screeching and incessant cleaning routine is too much. The sounds from and work required for this machine do not meet the price point.

We'd like to address the issue you're having with sound, and provide information regarding maintenance. We suggest only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles; you can view the manual on our GE Appliances website by looking up the model number, going to the product's page, and viewing the 'Owner Support' section. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. Please ensure that there’s at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow. If you continue to have an issue, please disconnect the Opal from power for 3 to 4 hours before reconnecting, to reset it. If you're still having an issue with sound afterward, please send us a private message via Facebook, Instagram, or X with your contact information, complete model/serial numbers, and a copy of this review so that we can review the information and get back with you quickly.

Not worth it

Really disappointed. The first one I bought wouldn't stop screeching. So I went back and exchanged it figures it was defective. After about 5 uses this one is doing the same. I've cleaned it after each use and haven't done anything that could have caused this. For the price tag I expected much better

Horrible noise

I have been seeing all of the reviews about this ice makers. They are true. This machine makes an unbearable squealing noise and I can't get it to stop whatever I do. Unplug, dethaw, descale. Extremely disappointed that GE would continue to sell this producer with the same problems that a lot of customers are having. Now, what are our options to something comparable?

We are happy to provide guidance with the sounds of this Opal icemaker. When the Opal is in need of defrosting, it may start to squeak as ice starts to build up around the mechanisms. The defrost cycle is automatic and may take 10 to 45 minutes. We have also provided some normal operating sounds for this unit in the article "Opal Ice Maker - Normal Sounds" on our GE Appliances website under the Support tab.

Don't bother getting this

A total piece of crap! This is my second attempt at getting the Profile 2.0, and both of the units are worthless. The grinding, squeaking, moaning noise that comes out of this little machine can actually be heard from outside my house with the windows and doors closed. It is unbearable and just screams that it's a poorly engineered product. GE, you should be ashamed of yourself. What a piece of crap you are building.
