"Sonic Ice at Home"

If your like our family, in the summer, there's never enough ice. It seems like we make a trip to Sonic to get a bag of ice every other day. Not any more... With the GE Opal Nugget Ice Maker 2.0 we have all the ice we need and we don't have to experience an "Heat" to get it. We love our new ice maker. Pick yours up while supplies last.

Loudest ice maker of all time.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] While this ice maker generates good ice, it produces the most obnoxious and annoying sounds to the point my kid couldn't sleep through the night. I had to unplug it 2 days after I got it hooked up.

We recommend running a full cleaning/descaling and sanitizing cycle to resolve this issue. You can find the instructions for this starting on page 7 of the Use and Care Manual here: https://products-salsify.geappliances.com/image/upload/s--1jfWxVD5--/sucedrcowdih1xgqteu1.pdf. Please note, to ensure proper performance, we do recommend only using distilled water in your Opal.

Noise

We purchased this unit on 5/23/26 and installed on 5/24/26. We clean per the operators manual and only use the correct recommended water. It is installed on counter and have the required room all around the system. Today is started squealing loudly. We unplugged it and left if off for 30 minutes. Plugged it back in and the squealing started again within a minute or so. Sounds like a bearing is going out. We submitted a replacement/warranty claim on the GE website. We will see what happens. We love the machine and enjoy the amount and size ice is produces. We just want this fixed or replaced.

Not happy

We are having trouble with the ice maker. It is making a screeching sound for long periods of time

We are happy to provide guidance with Opal sounds. When your Opal is in need of defrosting, it may start to squeak as ice starts to build up around the mechanisms. The defrost cycle is automatic and may take 10 to 45 minutes. The screeching you're experiencing can be the result of the appliance needing to be descaled. To descale, fill the reservoir with hot vinegar (100-120°F) to the max fill line and run up to three cleaning cycles. When using vinegar, leave the vinegar in the unit for 18 hours and set a vinegar-soaked towel on the ice chute overnight to further dissolve any mineral build-up. Clean the sensors with vinegar and wipe clean with water. After draining the vinegar, run three rinse cycles using fresh water for each rinse. If the tips provided do not help, please contact Opal Ice Maker Support by calling 1-866-907-6718.

Bad design

The water reservoir has a flawed design. When you add water to the tank and turn it upside down, the lid opens.

The Opal side tank isn't designed to come apart as shown in your video. We recommend calling the Opal support team at 1-866-907-1655 for further assistance. If needed, installation information for the side tank can be found on page 13 of the Owner's Manual: https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--1jfWxVD5--/sucedrcowdih1xgqteu1.pdf.

We’d like to assist with this issue you’ve had with sound. We recommend ensuring there’s at least 4” of clearance around the Opal on all sides and on top to allow for proper air flow. We also suggest following the cleaning instructions that start on page 7 of your manual; that’s linked here: https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--9_JHdteK--/248fcfa1db27d93cf26d2d04dad1f2db57a3f5f1.pdf. Running full descaling and sanitizing cycles can often help with an issue. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can also help break up minerals that may be impeding optimal operation. We suggest filling both the internal reservoir and side tank with water, rather than only the side tank. You can also reset the Opal by disconnecting it from power for 3 to 4 hours before reconnecting. We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. We’ll be reaching out over email to discuss your situation further. We look forward to hearing back from you, so we can assist.

Doesn't work as claimed. Have to clean twice weekl

Doesn't work like claims, it flashes once every other day like it needs to be cleaned. It's only a couple weeks old, and it started flashing after a couple days. I only use bottled water in it, it's not like I use dirty water.

A seriously flawed product.

I was sooo excited to get this. I had done a lot of research, and despite a few reviewers on different sites saying that it suddenly began making loud noises, I thought "that won't happen with mine". Long story short, it makes great ice, and it makes it fast. We loved that, as well as it's countertop ability, and no need for a dedicated water line or drain line. We left it running 24 hours a day, and for the first few days everything was great. On the 4th or 5th day, we were watching TV at about 5PM when all of a sudden it sounded like someone began screaming right behind us. Scared the tar out of us. I'm talking about someone standing right behind you suddenly screaming as loud as they can, as if they were in great pain. I had read that the fix recommended by GE for this issue was to "unplug the icemaker and wait for 2 to 4 hours, so the icemaker can thaw and reset". So that's what we did. After waiting 4 hours, we plugged it back in. Ice began to be made, and everything seemed fine. At approximately 2:30 AM the same night, roughly 5 hours after plugging it back in, my wife and I were shocked awake by the same screaming ice maker. I'm not sure I can properly or adequately convey the noise this makes, and this site won't let me attach a video. Picture in your mind sleeping soundly and someone coming within 3 feet of you and yelling/screaming as loud as they possibly can, and they won't stop. When I returned this to Sam's Club, the clerk told me that the last person that returned one of these said the same exact thing happened to them. The fact that GE can continue to sell these knowing full well they're flawed is shameful. This product should be recalled.

Don't Waste The Money

Worst ice machine I've ever purchased. Bought two and neither one worked for longer than 4 days!
