Awful

Don't waste your money. TurboTax has become a masterclass in predatory upselling. Last year, using IRS Direct File was a much smoother, honest experience. It was straightforward, free, and didn't involve being hassled to "upgrade" every five minutes. Now that we've seen how simple filing directly with the IRS can be, paying TurboTax's exorbitant fees, especially their ridiculous $60+ charge just for state returns, feels like a total scam. Skip the corporate bloat and find a service that doesn't treat your tax return like a hostage situation.

Lots of Time Wasted

Yesterday I did a quick review but did not articulate some of the problems. 1. In my folder there are multiple files for the same tax return. Type is TurboTax 2025 document. In previous years never had this occur. 2. If I have a file that I am working on but saved then later restart TurboTax and after an Update, the my Tax Return with Continue button does not show. I have to go to File and Open Tax Return. This is never occurred w previous years 3. Over the years I had at least 3 different TurboTax accts. I never took time or had the info from prior years handy to keep using the same acct. This year it bit me. Took a long, frustrating journey to get handle on the two most recent acct IDs and Passwords. Yes my self inflicted situation, but wish there was a more better way to deal with getting a handle on this maybe consolidating accounts. 3. At some point things were not going well. I used the Help which directed me to and article or something that recommended getting an update which I had to invoke. The update appeared to be the entire program updated. But things worked better. Not great. 4. Some of the phrases or language used is not specific enough. The most difficult for me was a SSA-1099 lump sum provided in 2025 for year 2024. The explanation and help for this was not very helpful. The Community Help was a bit better, but I still did not have a full grasp of the logic tree for the way it is handled based of various metrics. When I looked at the worksheet form my eyes rolled up in my head. The IRS is getting too complex which makes your job more difficult. 5. I talked to two support people (for program not tax info). I started via Chat help and then selected call. I held for 25 min or so for the first tech person who I could ne hear well due to her phone connect or whatever. She said she was making adjustments and next thing I was disconnected. Called again and another 20 min wait and got Allen. Allen did great. He listened very well, even some whining then proceeded to help. It lead to sharing my screen. Bottom line he got me and things straight. 6. Bottomline I put in an huge amount of time in dealing with 2025 TurboTax Desktop Premium. So much so I am thinking of going to a local preparer or HR Block program next year.

Easy to use

Have been using Turbo Tax for a lot of years and also easy and accurate. The Step by Step interview process helps to ensure all topics are covered. I even got advice and recommendations for a deprecation deduction I would have otherwise missed. Filing is super easy and can be assured this is done completely

Turbo tax should immediately display the amount of the standard tax deduction available -- BEFORE walking the customer through all of the itemized deductions. In my case the standard deduction for me and my wife was more than $40,000. I wasted a considerable amount of time and effort going through the itemized deductions because I didn't realize how huge the standard deduction was. If the standard deduction had been shown BEFORE walking me through the itemized deductions I would have quickly realized the futility of playing with the itemized deductions. I am angry about the fact that I can't save and print my return without needing to subscribe to Adobe Acrobat. I assume you get a sizeable kickback from Adobe at my expense -- I don't appreciate this gross inconvenience. It should be illegal for a company to not disclose such a policy -- forcing an unexpected subscription -- prominently to the purchaser before the purchaser buys the product.

Extractive Corporation Makes Garbage Product

Ugly interface, and buggy, too. Crashed multiple times on an up-to-date Mac and somehow forgot to ask multiple state-required questions by the end so I had to go back and manually answer them. Multiple tax forms that I needed did not appear so I had to search manually. Even simple text input while writing this review is bugging out. And they have the gall to keep trying to squeeze extra money out of you throughout the process. I'm disgusted and will use the much more easy-to-use free options that are now available. Check out the Last Week Tonight video on them!

Turbotax does the job.

Did not engage personally and taxes were rejected when submitted. Turbotax gave instructions on how to find the form 1095-A that was missing and had not been received. Post office said they were behind in deliveries by a month. The IRS instructions were not good on how to get the form on line. Market Place did not have a form 1095-A listed. However a search with the word "statement" eventually led to the form that was needed on the Market Place website.

Poor design/bugs re 1099-Q distribn & campus jobs

Had a very difficult time returning to where I had been before when entering/discarding 1099-Q information which turned out to not be required for a dependent college student with a 529 distribution and part time income. Also, there was no appropriate guiding query or check regarding student campus job exemption from FICA and Medicare withholding.

Left in the dark on itemizing vs the std deduction

TurboTax stated that it would determine if it was best for me to take a standard deduction or to itemize, but determined before I entered medical costs or pharmacy costs that I shoud take the standard deduction. In fact, it did not allow me to enter medical or pharmacy costs, but defaulted to $0 for each. I had significant medical costs due to spine surgery and a hip replacement which would have resulted in a relatively high dollar among with itemizing. How could TurboTax determine that the standard deduction was the best option before all itemizable data was entered. TurboTax gave no explanation for preventing the entry of medical and pharmacy data. There may be a good reason, but it was not given. Not happy that TurboTax left me in the dark on this issue so I coiuld give it 5 stars. I never encountered this is prior years using TurboTax.

Not the easiest software to use

Turbotax is not for the fainthearted. Many steps were not intuitive, and the software issues that came up required extensive searches through forums to resolve. This happens year after year. It's still cheaper than paying a professional, but easy is it not.

Makes you a tax expert!

Thanks to AI tools like gemini, chatgpt, claude, I was able to get through using turbo tax much faster than previous years where I had to scroll through dozens of community forum answers to figure out things. 1. If your smart check found an error - why not have the UI take you to the section where the problem was found? How helpful is it to just ask Enter State for 2619: ____ ? Also Why do you have to make Backdoor Roth conversion SO INSANELY CONFUSING?
