online version vs the computer version

I docked the product because initially I intended to file "online" after years of preparing the returns using the product "using the computer". I found the "online" product to be cumbersome for me. It was difficult for me to follow the "flow" of my entries. I did not feel comfortable using the product in this fashion.

Disappointed it didn't indicate BBB social sec ded

Worked as always!. However, big negative was that I wish there would have been some sort of indication that we were getting the $6000 social security deduction for my wife who is 65. I had to google/AI if the deduction was baked into the program and just not visible. Google/AI said it was, which we expected as our tax bill was much better than last years. It's like they don't want Trump's BBB to get any credit for the tax relief.

Turbotax Overall Good Rating

Overall, good software. W-2 from different states, should isolate states so that e-filing isn't a conflict when 1st state doesn't accept values from another 2nd state which has no bearing on actual state filing. For instance, NY state e-filing wouldn't allow values from a ONLY NJ W-2.

Will be back next year.

Desktop copy loaded without any difficulty. The vast majority of forms and required inputs went smoothly. There were some changes in the inputs required for claiming a RMD which required some extra time compared to last year. If one is not paying attention, a lot of time can be wasted trying to figure out what went wrong.

Still one of the all-time greats in tax prep!

I have been a user of TurboTax for decades, and have found it to be the one of the best tools for dealing with the complexity of tax preparation/filing and navigating the changes that come with every new tax year. I like its approach to gathering the data with a user-friendly, question-driven interface. I also like the ability to import and compare tax documents from previous years with this year's return.

Better flow within data entry screens

Overall I like Turbo Tax, I takes me to where I need to put information, and it's accurate. It looks for the information I need from previous years, so there is not a lot of redundant inputs on my part. One issue I have with federal program, as I go down the list of income or deduction topics and enter my data, it always jumps back up to the top of the page after data is entered. I have to keep scrolling back down to get to the next topic. After finishing one input let it return to that topic heading for either review or for going on to the next topic. One smaller issue, after entering bank information for refund deposit for the federal return, It didn't put that information on the state return for that refund.

Statutory Income Problem

I am a statutory employee, receiving a W-2. The W-2 showed both the employee amount plus on line 11 the same amount as a non-qualified plan amount. Turbo tax entered both amounts into the tax form. First, the line 1 amount correctly went into the Schedule C. The non-qualified amount then went into Other Income. So the income was doubled. Therefore I have just completed an amended form 1040X to correct the over-taxation. This problem continues in the 2023 and 2024 Turbo Tax programs. I must next amend them.

TurboTax is Flawed for 2025

Unfortunately, the program is more complicated this year. I have a Form 1099G that only has a couple of sections that do not have the typical line indicators on it (from Illinois). You can't enter what isn't listed on the form. Likewise, your system is failing to acknowledge that on my Form 1095-A, Column's B & C had zero amounts listed. My mother claimed me as a dependent, but could not list this form for this very same reason, so I have tried to push it onto my returns. It keeps taking me back, cyclically, to the same zero entries and will not let me get past it!! I don't even know if my returns have been e-filed because of this! What is wrong with your program? Now I understand that she will need to do an amended return in order to claim the money. She tried, but could not get past this error in the program.

Frustrating to use.

TurboTax has been getting worse every year. The prompts can be unhelpful at times. Things that seem like they should autofill don't, and there is no hint of where to find the information it's asking for. The F1 help is useless. I can't find a way to search for a keyword in the forms to help me find something that I need to change. Some of the questions in the state form (IL) also seem like they should have autofilled from the Federal form. Yet, I was stuck trying to find the info myself. Oftentimes, the "Learn More" link is just a rephrasing of the prompt that I'm looking for help on, which in turn is just a rephrasing of the prompt on the tax form. I'm ready to move to different tax prep software. I've been waiting years for TurboTax to be excellent program I used in the beginning, but it looks like "barely acceptable" is the new quality standard.

Do Better

State tax calculation omitted the standard deduction and did not provide information to take the retirement income subtraction. these caused an error of more than $2000 and when I discovered the issue, I had to file an amended return. I have always relied on Turbo Tax for accuracy, but this year was unacceptable!
