Second Purchase - OOPS

Just purchased 5 more on these. Regrettably there has been a HUGE change in quality. We just moved into our new home where I brought 7 of these shelving units that I purchased about 5 years ago with me that I disassembled and then reassembled in my new basement. Still extremely happy with the older units. Except of a slight color change, the 'appearance' of the new and older units is identical. But the quality is NOT close. I put all 7 of the older units i brought with me together in a little over an hour. This included putting then in place, moving them, pushing them around and lining them up. I then started assembling the new units. The first unit took me over 45 minutes to put together. The assembly process and construction is the same, but the quality of the steel, thickness of each piece is not the same. The new units are thinner, manufacturing quality is at best VERY poor. i ended up having to bend the metal pieces over and over trying to get them to fit. I am an engineer, and very mechanically inclinded, and 190 pounds. qualified and quite capable, but i struggled. A few examples: The four corner supports are two 36" pieces you put together to form your 6' corners. The older version was the same except the piece used to fit between the two for the older was a substantial piece of angled steel about 5" long and when the two 36" where assemble with this piece the 6' corner would be easy to work with and not come apart. The newer units, instead of this piece of steel to assemble the two pieces, us a piece of plastic that is all of about a half inch. So cheap, and assembling the legs, this does not hold them together allowing you to move it around assembling the rest of the unit's pieces. When i FINALLY got one put tother, took a deep breath and went to move it into place, only a 6-8" move, the unit came apart at this joint falling apart with the upper half landing on the floor. Another example: the rivets or small 'buttons' that 'fit' into the corner pieces should fit easily into the holes, then snap down. This was so much work and so frustrating, over half the units shelf rails would not slide all the way down and some i could not get to go in at all without tools and countless working of the pieces pounding wiggling into place. With the poor construction, IF I were to want to change on of the shelves location, the height of one of the selves, taking it apart and putting it at a different elevation was next to impossible because beating the shelves apart because they fit so forcibly together caused the whole unit to come apart in where you did not want it to. I wanted all my shelves new and older to match. i was excited to find i could still get these units so they all looked the same. My wife would not have put up with this and would have returned these units. I managed thru it. I do not plan to move again, but if i do, these newer units will stay here.

Poor Quality Shelving and Packaging

Quality not as good as the shelving I purchased 4-5 years ago. In addition, the first order arrived with damaged shelves. The replacement order also arrived with damaged shelves. Unless Sam's improves packaging (or improves quality of shelving), this will continue to be a problem. I was satisfied with the original shelving; would not recommend this newer version. See attached pictures.

BROKEN OUT OF BOX - NOT BACKING UP THEIR PRODUCT

I was only in town for a few days to work on a rental - did an instore pickup of this shelving unit to pick up with other things while I had a truck to use. After getting it home three of the shelves were split in the middle. I first went to the website and chat tht the interior paper said to go to with any problems - the chat person said they couldn't help and to call a 800 number - which I did. That person then proceeded to tell me I had to bring back the entire item ( mostly assembled at this point and now without a truck to use to bring it back) in order for her to be able to help me at all. When I explained how that would not be possible and had pictures to show all the damage and requested the broken 3 shelves be shipped to my address she said that was not possible. She offered a $20 gift certificate for the hassle but refused to refund the items without me physically finding a way to bring it back to the store and would not ship the broken pieces to me. AWFUL SERVICE.

cannot be assembled as purchased

if you bought these in the past they came with metal angle pieces to join the upright posts. These are now tiny plastic pieces less than 3/4" tall. They will not hold the post sections. I had to make 2" long pieces out of 1" angle iron to join the posts. Picture is my index finger pointing at the included plastic joiner and the angle piece I made.

Sturdy, BUT the 2023 version is junk

Classic bait and switch. The new version is black metal with plastic joining pieces if you want to utilize the full 72" height shelf. The original gray shelf had sturdy metal joiners that pushed deep into the outer supports. The new joiners are short plastic nubs that require a shelf to be installed at the midway point. You now have less control on your shelf height choices since it requires a shelf in the middle to hold the top and bottom together. Appears to be a POOR way to save a dollar on the cost.

At this price point, a no brainer

Bought two of these for organizing the storage in my shed. There is no way you can find anything better at this price point. Assembly was quick. The second one took less than 15 minutes, no tools. The first was just a tiny bit longer while I went through the instructions. Works perfectly for me. Do I believe the 800 lbs. per shelf capacity and total capacity of 4000 lbs? Absolutely not. But they meet my needs and I would buy again. I recommend.

downhill

5 and 6 years ago we bought several of these shelves. They were absolutely amazing good quality and good tabs that held them together. This past few months we bought 3 more and they are absolute crap. It`s a shame I`m going to have to buy more but I will try to source the clips that hold the top and bottom elsewhere. The new shelves have a little tiny plastic clip that holds the top legs onto the bottom legs. The old shelves had a fairly heavy duty metal pin and it wasnt possibly to tip the top half off the bottom how but its a safety issue now.

Truly Excellent Shelves at a Very Reasonable Cost

Let me begin by saying that these shelves were well-packaged and arrived undamaged. How refreshing. No parts were missing, no corners were broke, no metal parts were bent. Everything was perfect. Design-wise, the vertical posts are much stronger than I expected, being made of steel that's rolled over onto itself. You can see what I'm talking about in the attached photos. Most shelves of this style basically use a piece of angled steel with holes. These look to be much stronger. The shelves are laminated. I don't know what's inside of them, but they seem a lot stronger than the bare particle board that's commonly used in shelves of this style. They also don't look like they'll sag. Time will tell on that, but the shelves certainly are better quality than most. The laminate should also help with sloppy things like jugs of motor oil, that tend to drip on and ruin bare particle board. In all candor, I bought this unit expecting the shelves to be garbage that I would wind up replacing, and just keeping the frame. But these shelves appear to be very durable. I'm pleasantly surprised. Assembly was simple and intuitive. Start at the bottom, and build up. You may need a rubber mallet to pound the rubber feet in or seat the shelf supports, but no other tools are needed. It's a simple one-person job. A helper might come in handy to hold things together until the first shelf is installed, but I did it alone with no headaches. Once assembled, the unit is very sturdy. There's no wobbling, rocking, or rolling with this thing. I didn't even bother securing it to the wall studs like I usually would. This unit isn't going anywhere. In short, I'm a happy camper. It's rare these days to buy something that winds up being better than expected. I'm attaching some odd pictures showing some of the details of the shelves that I think might be of interest. I hope they're helpful. Richard

Extremely Dissatisfied

I purchased the same model shelves years ago and loved them. I'm extremely disappointed this rack as it does not stand up to many of the other Member's Mark products. The shelves arrived damaged and it was very difficult to assemble. The shelves are flimsy; I barely tapped one with a mallet and it bent. The shelving is not sturdy.
