Just purchased 5 more on these. Regrettably there has been a HUGE change in quality. We just moved into our new home where I brought 7 of these shelving units that I purchased about 5 years ago with me that I disassembled and then reassembled in my new basement. Still extremely happy with the older units. Except of a slight color change, the 'appearance' of the new and older units is identical. But the quality is NOT close. I put all 7 of the older units i brought with me together in a little over an hour. This included putting then in place, moving them, pushing them around and lining them up. I then started assembling the new units. The first unit took me over 45 minutes to put together. The assembly process and construction is the same, but the quality of the steel, thickness of each piece is not the same. The new units are thinner, manufacturing quality is at best VERY poor. i ended up having to bend the metal pieces over and over trying to get them to fit. I am an engineer, and very mechanically inclinded, and 190 pounds. qualified and quite capable, but i struggled. A few examples: The four corner supports are two 36" pieces you put together to form your 6' corners. The older version was the same except the piece used to fit between the two for the older was a substantial piece of angled steel about 5" long and when the two 36" where assemble with this piece the 6' corner would be easy to work with and not come apart. The newer units, instead of this piece of steel to assemble the two pieces, us a piece of plastic that is all of about a half inch. So cheap, and assembling the legs, this does not hold them together allowing you to move it around assembling the rest of the unit's pieces. When i FINALLY got one put tother, took a deep breath and went to move it into place, only a 6-8" move, the unit came apart at this joint falling apart with the upper half landing on the floor. Another example: the rivets or small 'buttons' that 'fit' into the corner pieces should fit easily into the holes, then snap down. This was so much work and so frustrating, over half the units shelf rails would not slide all the way down and some i could not get to go in at all without tools and countless working of the pieces pounding wiggling into place. With the poor construction, IF I were to want to change on of the shelves location, the height of one of the selves, taking it apart and putting it at a different elevation was next to impossible because beating the shelves apart because they fit so forcibly together caused the whole unit to come apart in where you did not want it to. I wanted all my shelves new and older to match. i was excited to find i could still get these units so they all looked the same. My wife would not have put up with this and would have returned these units. I managed thru it. I do not plan to move again, but if i do, these newer units will stay here.
